The Male Lead’s Father Refuses to Break Off Our Engagement

MLFRBOE Chapter 49

Chapter 49

The nanny was furious.

“Alex, that bastard even goes to our prince!”

Evelia felt strange in that attitude. The nanny spoke as if she knew Alex would be like this.

But before I asked her about it, she finished what she was talking about.

“But even after I told him everything, the Duke didn’t seem to think it was strange. He said it was always like that.”

“…….”

“That’s strange, I know that the Duke cares for him very much. But why is he so indifferent about this matter?”

The nanny bit her lip. It was a thoughtful face.

The nanny was so overcome with emotion that she couldn’t hold back her tears.

Evelia hurriedly handed her a handkerchief.

“Ugh, thank you.”

Evelia calmly waited until the nanny calmed down.

The nanny, who burst into tears, said while still sobbing.

“There is nothing I can say to you about the Duke.”

Evelia understood her.

‘I guess you can’t speak ill of your master.’

It was time to leave because I didn’t want to burden the nanny.

The nanny opened her mouth again.

“But I think it’s okay to tell you this. Sir Alex Marc was also the Duke’s swordsmanship teacher. The previous Duke knew all about Sir Marc’s teaching methods. But he didn’t intervene.”

“…….”

“Even the previous Duke…”

The nanny wiped her eyes with her sleeve.

“He simply had to endure everything he was given.”

“Then the Duke too…”

The nanny stopped Evelia.

“That’s all I can tell you.”

Then she bowed and left the room.

Evelia sat down on the bed with a confused mind. I buried my face in my hands.

Listening to the nanny, I could understand what had happened.

‘Cassis was also abused.’

Alex Marc would have given Cassis the same lesson. Assaults in the guise of sparring and harsh words.

Perhaps Cassis might have sought help from his father. However, his father, the previous Duke, knew everything about Alex Marc but neglected it.

A father who only insisted on responsibility as the successor, and a mother who was sick and could not pay attention to him.

The abuse and neglect piled on top of each other, and eventually Cassis became numb and took what was given to him as normal.

He took the unfair treatment for granted, and I became helpless and unable to fight back.

Cassis Adelhard, cold-blooded without blood or tears. The person he is now must have been created that way.

‘Maybe that’s why he’s clinging to Julia.’

Maybe Julia was the only person who cared about him in such a dark reality.

If so, his blind obsession with Julia seemed understandable.

A while ago, while talking about the previous Duchess, I remembered what he said.

-There were no tears. Don’t you usually cry when you’re sad?

-Someone even pointed a finger at me for not crying.

-Do you think I’m a monster?

He is not a monster. He was simply raised not to feel or express emotions.

The real monsters were those who abused him until he became like that.

But why does Cassis have to call himself a monster?

I felt like crying. No, in fact, the palms covering my face felt damp.

Evelia knew nothing about Cassis.

But ignorance was also a sin. I didn’t mean to say such harsh things without knowing anything about him.

She once again hurt the victim, Cassis.

I was so blinded by Ruth’s situation that I failed to see Cassis’s situation.

‘I need to apologize.’

I had to apologize, saying I did it because I didn’t know better, and that I made a mistake.

Just because you don’t feel any emotions doesn’t mean you won’t get hurt.

But I was scared to go to Cassis. I couldn’t figure out what to say in front of him.

As I was thinking about it, a lot of time passed. After I came to my senses, it was dark and it was an awkward time to visit Cassis.

‘Let’s go apologize tomorrow.’

Evelia changed her clothes with Annie’s help and was about to lie down on the bed when she suddenly heard a knock.

“Oh my goodness. Who could it be at this hour?”

Annie, who had headed to the door in confusion, came running back in.

“La-lady! It’s Duke!”

“What?”

Evelia was also quite surprised.

‘I’m not mentally ready…’

Aside from my promise to apologize, I still didn’t have the confidence to face Cassis.

“Duke… Why at this hour?”

“I don’t know about that…”

Annie whispered quietly.

“But, his expression doesn’t look good.”

I guess so. He must have also had a lot on his mind after hearing Evelia’s words.

Evelia, who was trying to send Cassis back, couldn’t ignore Annie’s words.

“Bring my coat.”

When Evelia gestured, Annie’s face turned even whiter.

“You should change your clothes, not put on a coat!”

“What are you doing? Bring it quickly.”

I wanted to see Cassis as soon as possible.

Annie noticed Evelia’s stubborn attitude and brought her coat in a sullen manner.

Evelia hurriedly put on a coat over her white pajamas and headed toward the door where Cassis was standing.

The room she was using had a separate bedroom and drawing room.

Cassis was waiting in front of the door to the drawing room.

As Annie said, his expression was not good. Even though I couldn’t see his face properly because he was standing in a dark hallway, I could feel that his face was dark.

“Come on in.”

Cassis, who had come inside at Evelia’s gesture, was startled when he saw her. He inadvertently lowered his gaze and he quickly looked away.

If she wasn’t mistaken, his ears were slightly red.

“That…”

His voice trembled slightly.

“Yes…?”

Evelia, who was wondering why Cassis was like this, soon realized the reason.

‘Is it because of the way I dress?’

Because of the rush, the front of the coat was slightly open, revealing a little of the pajamas underneath.

But it was a little strange.

‘What’s the problem?’

Even though it was called pajamas, it looked like a white dress with no curves. There was no exposure at all.

Moreover, on the night that someone pretending to be Evelia’s mother came to visit, Cassis comforted her while she was crying in her pajamas.

I’m wrapped tightly in a coat…

Whatever the reason, Cassis seemed a little uncharacteristically embarrassed, so I mumbled an excuse.

“Oh, I’m sorry for dressing like this. I was just getting ready to go to bed.”

Cassis covered his mouth with his hand, trying desperately not to look at Evelia. Not only his ears were red, but now even the nape of his neck was red.

Seeing this, Evelia, who had thought nothing of it, also became embarrassed for no reason. she asked awkwardly, taking a few steps back.

“Uh, do you have something to say?”

“No. I will come back tomorrow.”

Evelia hurriedly grabbed Cassis’s arm as he turned to run away. Cassis froze with his right foot forward.

Evelia had this strange thought as she saw him not shaking off her hand.

‘Have we gotten much closer?’

On the day she first announced the breakup of our engagement, Cassis nonchalantly brushed away her hand that was holding his clothes as if they were dirty.

But now, he wasn’t offended nor did he shake it off.

It certainly seemed like something had changed between the two of us.

“You can’t just leave after coming all the way here. Isn’t it urgent?”

“I don’t think it’s urgent… but maybe it is…”

“Come in.”

Evelia carefully pulled Cassis’ arm. Cassis was slowly dragged along. We walked to the sofa in that position.

Unlike Evelia, who was sitting on the sofa, Cassis was standing a few steps away.

“Should I ask you to bring the tea?”

“It’s okay.”

Evelia crossed her arms to prevent her coat from opening. Then, thinking that it might seem arrogant, I quickly relaxed my arms.

“So what do you want to talk about?”

Evelia took a deep, self-conscious breath, then I barely managed to speak.

“I’m sorry.”

Cassis blinked in confusion. Evelia added.

“I made a mistake to the Duke earlier. No, it was closer to an insult than a slip of the tongue. No matter how angry I was, I shouldn’t have said that.”
