When You Turned Your Back On Me, We Became Strangers

Theo, I met him at a banquet where I followed my sister.

 

Knowing that the gazes directed at me were not kind, I tried to ignore them and took a seat near her sister. Watching Letta, who was chatting with people and smiling brightly, Riley couldn’t help but smile.

My father had bought me a dress to wear at the ball, in case any of the men at the banqueting hall fell in love with my appearance and wanted to marry me.

 

It was the first proper dress I had worn in a long time.

 

I cleared my throat and scanned my surroundings in silence. The way they looked at me made my breath catch in my throat. Riley stood up and moved away from the crowd.

 

“I’ve heard so much about you, I didn’t get a chance to say hello when I saw you outside.”

 

Her eyes widened at the formal greeting in a friendly voice. This was the first time anyone had ever spoken to me.

 

“Ah, hello.”

“I’m Theo Albert of the Prinz family.”

 

To my surprise, he was from the same ducal family as me. Riley had a deaf ear for social gossip, but she’d often heard about him through Letta.

 

he was a very warm and affectionate man. Duke Theo was kind to everyone, upright and eager to work, working tirelessly to improve himself.

 

I was surprised that he took the first step to speak to me.

 

“I’m Princess Riley of House Trayla.”

“Even without you telling me, I recognised you at once. I had no idea you were so beautiful.”

“Ah……. Thank you.”

 

Her cheeks flushed at the unheard compliment. He was indeed a sweet man, and at the banquet that night, Riley sat next to him and spent some time chatting.

 

She thought that would be the end of their relationship, but Theo often visited the manor to see her after that, eventually wanted to marrying into the Trayla family.

 

It still seemed like a dream to Riley that he asked her to marry him when no one else would.

 

Duke Werther had no choice but to send her to the Prinz family. Her marriage was arranged so easily and quickly, as if they had taken care of an unresolved problem.

Once out of the suffocating house, Riley smiled at Theo. He loved me, and he was always so sweet to me. He never forgot to whisper to me every night that he loved me.

 

“I love you, Riley.”

“Me, too.”

“So go ahead and give me a child that looks like me.”

“I’ll try.”

 

There was nothing out of the ordinary about him, except that he was unusually obsessed with me. He came home late every day from work, but he never stayed overnight or did anything that made me worry.

 

The smile never left Riley’s face as she realised what happiness looked like.

 

She had been married for about a year. They had been married for about a year when the news came that the markings had not appeared on Leta’s body as an adult.

 

Her dad was really mad, and Leta tried to leave as fast as she could. Her texts showed that she was super worried. She was afraid that something bad would happen to her sister.

 

“I have to see her.

 

But I couldn’t.

 

The Duke would not allow me to stay overnight. She hadn’t been out of the duchy since they were married because of her ill health.

 

“Have you heard any news of my sister?”

“Yes, I have heard. Don’t worry too much about your sister, I’ll let you know what I hear.”

 

Theo said, stroking Riley’s shoulder gently. She nodded as he told her not to worry about anything else, that he would take care of it.

 

At the Prinz Ducal Residence, Riley often spent her time tending to her flowers or reading a book. She would occasionally check herself in the mirror, but she didn’t do much else.

 

It wasn’t until she became bored with the same day after day that she noticed a change.

 

For some reason, she felt heavier than usual and tired easily. She was constantly drowsy and her appetite was gone. At first she didn’t notice it, but when she did, she sat up and counted the days on her fingers.

 

“No way!

 

She glanced at the date, just in case. It was two weeks past the due date, and she didn’t want to tell Theo right away, just in case. She wanted to tell him when she was more certain.

 

“A child, oh my God, I’m so happy.

 

I couldn’t help but smile as I imagined a child that looked like him and me. I felt like I finally had a family of my own. She vowed to give him the happiest family.

 

It wasn’t until another week passed that she felt confident and happy enough to mail the letter to the Duke.

 

“Riley!”

 

She heard Theo’s voice. She looked at her watch and saw that it was earlier than usual. Theo, who had been waiting to hear the two words pregnant every day, had come home with the doctor.

 

As she watched the doctor examine me, Riley felt a mixture of anticipation and anxiety, her heart beating faster and faster.

 

“You’re pregnant.”

“I am, really?”

“We won’t know for a while longer, but it looks like you’re pregnant, and I think you should take care of yourself for a while.”

“Thank you, stop by often and keep an eye on your wife’s body.”

 

Riley smiled at the smile that lit up the Duke’s face. She was truly happy. She couldn’t believe she had a child, a husband, a family of her own.

 

“My lady, you’ve had a very difficult time.”

“No, I can’t believe I’m having a baby.”

“I’m glad it happened so soon.”

 

Theo hugged Riley and stroked her back. She smiled in his arms, too. As warm and affectionate as Theo’s voice was, it felt strange today.

 

He seemed regretful, as if his work was done.

 

Her hunch was correct.

 

The next day, Theo brought a woman home. She was smiling shyly at him, and he had one hand on her shoulder, holding her close.

 

“Riley, say hello. This is Anna.”

 

Anna. She was Theo’s mistress.
