When I Became a Zombie

My wrist looks a bit horrible.

The flesh was torn open by the teeth, and the bone was broken. I could even hear the sound of the bone scraping when I laid my hand flat.

Fortunately, it wasn’t crushed or snapped forcefully. Other than the bitten flesh, the remaining parts were connected well enough that they wouldn’t come apart easily.

Honestly, I was a bit frustrated.

But seeing him stubbornly folding the torn flesh back together, placing a board under my wrist, and wrapping it tightly with bandages, while tears occasionally fell on it, I still reached out my other hand to touch him. “I… don’t feel pain.”

That was the truth; I really didn’t feel pain.

He looked up at me with a pained smile, “Doesn’t matter if I’m in pain?”

I wanted to apologize… but I was afraid that saying so might make him more upset.

Even though it was bandaged, it was still useless. I couldn’t control my right hand to make any movements.

We weren’t sitting in the first-class area; that place was now a mess.

Fortunately, my companions didn’t seem to have the urge to eat him anymore. So we had to move to another spot, while my kind continued to wander outside.

I didn’t know what was happening to us, but I was relieved. At least it proved that we were different from the initial frenzy, only thinking about eating.

But I didn’t know how long they could stay like this, how long I could, whether this was temporary or permanent, or what it meant.

What made me more anxious was that with one hand gone, I couldn’t let him follow me.

He finished bandaging, checked my elbow, and asked if it was tight enough.

I shook my head; I couldn’t feel anything. I had more important things to ask him.

“Your… companions…”

He looked at me in confusion.

No, that’s not right. It should be: “…Where are your kind?”

He understood and shook his head, “I don’t know. We have a camp outside the city. We lost a few people at the store last time. I don’t know if they’ll still be there.”

At least we could give it a try.

I pushed myself up from the floor and walked towards the cabin. I used my left hand to open the door. This time, I was more agile and quickly got it open.

He followed me and asked, “What are you going to do?”

I walked inside, turned back, “You… pack up, things… camp.”

He looked stunned for a moment, while I turned to find the bag I had brought back.

Oh, right… I didn’t need the bag. There were backpacks here… He also needed water, which was in the kitchen… and he needed a bottle to carry it… but there were no bottles… I’d better check the kitchen.

As I was about to go, he placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “We can’t go back yet. What if they don’t trust me?”

I shook my head. I didn’t want to go back with him, but he couldn’t stay here.

I went to the window and pointed to the nearby waiting hall. “Disturbance… those things will hear and come out.”

In fact, since just now, the large windows on that side had been dark.

I knew our destructive power. If there were many of them, they would eventually find a way out…

I thought for a moment and continued, “Warn your kind… leave.”

He also noticed the movement and, upon hearing me, finally nodded.

It was much better with him coming alone. He found a travel backpack, packed some clothes, and also threw in the scavenged food. Without me reminding him about the water, he had already gone to the kitchen.

I picked up a few knives from the floor, strapped one to my waist, and handed the others to him when he came out of the kitchen.

He stood on my left side, and I reached out to hold his hand.

I didn’t tell him I recalled some fragments. It would certainly make him sad if asked. I only remembered the scene of parting, him looking at me disbelievingly through the car window, and him desperately trying to get out of the car to chase after me.

I remembered how much my wrist hurt, how I ran for a long time.

I remembered how much I hoped he could live safely.

Even when I first saw him in the store, not remembering him, forgetting to avoid the bottle on the ground, and letting myself fall forward, smearing him with dirt to cover his scent.

Even though my mind was full of hunger, I still wouldn’t bite this person.

I must have really cared about him back then.

I tightened my grip and stepped out of the plane cabin, standing on the steps and looking at my wandering kind below.

They turned around because of the noise but just stood there quietly.

Good, just stay there, don’t come over…

I was the first to descend the steps. He followed behind me. Halfway down, I saw someone in the distance move slightly. I had to let go of his hand and use my left hand to draw the knife from my waist.

Fortunately, the person only moved slightly and then stopped.

He hooked his arm around my right elbow. I turned to look at him and saw him smiling at me.

I tried to lift the corner of my mouth.

I succeeded. In his eyes, I saw my smiling face.

We walked steadily across the square, using the moonlight to head towards the damaged wall.

If possible, I would rather not be out at night, but there was no choice. The hall was full of unknown threats. Fortunately, the moon was still bright, so the path was clear.

And since we were leaving the city, the noise at the city’s edge was relatively low. With a bit of luck and caution, we should avoid encountering large groups of zombies or rapidly moving skeletal corpses.

I dared not relax, carefully sniffing the surrounding smells and listening to the sounds. It was difficult, especially with a living person behind me.

But I managed.

I suddenly felt like laughing.

It turned out he wasn’t being narcissistic…

He was really this amazing.
