Chapter 30
Shin Hae-jun, who had already been leaning more than half of his body out of the window, was nearly thrown out by the recent impact.
Thud!
Fortunately, he was able to grab onto the ceiling handle just before the collision, preventing him from falling out, but his body had lost its balance and was swaying. Then again. Bam! A rushing infected violently rocked the vehicle, and Shin Hae-jun was completely thrown out the window.
“I’ve opened the door!”
However, thanks to Ahyeon opening the driver’s seat door at just the right moment, Shin Hae-jun was prevented from being thrown onto the road like a rag doll. He dragged himself along the asphalt with his heels and managed to grasp the ceiling of the car.
“Fuck, what is that again?”
Regaining his composure, Shin Hae-jun muttered as he saw another massive infected charging at them. Ahyeon spun the wheel several times to avoid the infected, then shifted the car that had been reversing to start moving forward again. It was a remarkably quick decision from someone who had been struggling with the accelerator and brakes earlier. With his posture now stabilized, Shin Hae-jun let out a small chuckle.
“Oh, best driver.”
“That’s a bit…”
Although it was a half-mocking remark, Ahyeon shamelessly accepted Shin Hae-jun’s praise with a grin. Adding further.
“But still, I think it’s better for you to take over now, General.”
Her specialty was not driving but shooting.
After handing over the steering wheel to Shin Hae-jun, Min Ahyeon opened the sunroof before he could protest, and poked her head out.
“From what I see, that thing looks like a mutant infected. It seems to have enlarged unusually.”
As Ahyeon finished her sentence, Shin Hae-jun changed gears and turned the steering wheel.
“Hold on tight.”
Click!
The car spun around another half turn, kicking up a cloud of dust as it resumed its backward motion. Seizing the opportunity, Shin Hae-jun quickly turned on the high beams. This made the mutated infected chasing them much more visible.
“Shit….”
Shin Hae-jun muttered a curse under his breath, his brow furrowing as the sight of the mutated infected filled him with revulsion.
“Just how many are fused together?”
Indeed, the mutated infected was not simply a single infected that had grown in size through mutation. It seemed to be formed by multiple infected individuals merging into a single entity. The clumsily intertwined limbs and flesh were horrifyingly grotesque, raising the question of what kind of mutation could have produced such a form.
“I guess we can’t call that a creation of God anymore.”
There was no way something like that could be born from the skilled hands of God, as delicate as sculpting a cat.
Ahyeon drew a cross and muttered a short prayer. Then she lowered her body from the sunroof and returned inside. It wasn’t the time to be shocked.
“I’ll handle it.”
“Can you?”
With a sniper rifle and grenades in hand, Ahyeon smiled at Shin Hae-jun.
“Isn’t that what the General always says?”
Shin Hae-jun blinked slowly, then broke into a laugh.
“What matters is not whether you can, but whether you will.”
The same words came out of both their lips. Quoting oneself in such a situation was truly characteristic of Min Ahyeon.
Shin Hae-jun glanced at the confident Ahyeon, then firmly gripped the steering wheel. After turning the car back around and making it move forward again, he nodded towards Ahyeon.
“Come back.”
“Yes.”
Ahyeon unbuckled her seatbelt and tightly wrapped it around her ankles.
“I’ll do it and come back.”
Ahyeon climbed onto the roof of the car through the sunroof and quickly balanced herself on the moving vehicle. Facing off against a mutant infected creature wasn’t uncommon for mercenaries like her in this world, so she didn’t find it particularly challenging. Holding her rifle, she aimed through the scope and focused on the front.
“I can do this.”
Yesterday, Ahyeon had seen a mutant infected during the wave of infection. However, instead of showcasing her skills, she had felt fear, rendering herself useless. Despite boasting about her sniping skills, she hadn’t actually achieved anything, much to her own disappointment and even causing Shin Hae-jun to be irritated. That’s why this time, she couldn’t back down. If she did, it would only repeat the same situation as yesterday.
“Hey! Did I teach you to be like this? Aren’t you going to get yourself together?”
Shin Hae-jun’s words from the previous night echoed in her mind. She mustn’t fear the infected, or become powerless in their presence. At the very least, she had to live up to Shin Hae-jun’s teachings.
———!
The massive infected was stomping towards the car, its footsteps crumbling the asphalt.
Fwoosh…
With each step, the ground seemed to collapse beneath its feet. If such a creature tried to jump and lunge at the car, the electric current running through the surrounding barbed wire might not be enough to repel it. Attempting a reckless attack could lead to disastrous failure, so Ahyeon first put away her rifle and took out the night vision binoculars. She decided she needed to observe the infected more carefully.
Peering through the binoculars, Ahyeon clicked her tongue in frustration.
‘It’s moving in an unpredictable rhythm, making it hard to hit.’
The infected was hopping in an arrhythmic pattern, but Ahyeon quickly grasped its rhythm. Pulling the pin on a grenade, she held her breath, timing it to the infected’s movements, and without the slightest hesitation, threw the grenade.
Thunk, thunk, rumble.
The grenade landed right in front of the charging infected, triggering a massive explosion.
Boom—! Wham!!
A colorful mix of flames erupted, revealing the agonizing creature writhing in pain within. Ahyeon adjusted her aim through the scope, held her breath, and—
Bang!
The shot rang out, the bullet striking the center of the infected’s head with precision.
“Tsk.”
Ahyeon unconsciously clicked her tongue briefly, just like Shin Hae-jun. Her aim was perfect, but she didn’t manage to blow the head completely. The massive flesh seemed to protect the brain, preventing it from being completely shattered.
However, Ahyeon didn’t consider this a failure. Hadn’t she just proven that using the grenade first, then following up with the sniper shot, could effectively neutralize the infected’s response?
“General, could you please get the flashbang from the backseat?”
Ahyeon’s matter-of-fact request dumbfounded Shin Hae-jun.
“I don’t know if you can see, but I’m a little busy driving right now.”
“I’m in the middle of fighting the infected, the mutated ones at that.”
After hesitating for a moment, Shin Hae-jun clicked his tongue and loosened his tie, securing the steering wheel to the car’s handle.
“If we crash the car, we’ll both die.”
He then reclined the seat all the way back and reached towards the backseat, keeping his foot on the accelerator. Even at that moment, Ahyeon continued firing at the infected.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With the grenade’s flames dying down, the infected narrowly evaded Ahyeon’s attacks, but she was already confident the advantage was hers. If only she had that flashbang.
That’s when it happened.
Another infected charged from beyond the guardrail, flinging itself at the car. With Shin Hae-jun’s hands off the wheel, the car couldn’t maintain control and started veering across the road diagonally.
Screech!
The sound of the car’s tires scraping against the asphalt rang out loudly.
“Damn it, seriously.”
With great effort, Shin Hae-jun grabbed the steering wheel and quickly increased the car’s speed, but the mutant infected creature was faster. It let out a ghastly roar as it charged towards the rear of the car, closing the dangerously narrow gap.
“Lieutenant Min!”
Shin Hae-jun grabbed Ahyeon’s safety belt tightly and tossed the flashbang. Ahyeon immediately hurled the flashbang directly in front of the infected’s eyes.
————!
A tremendous flash of light and noise paralyzed her eyes and ears. But Ahyeon didn’t need her eyesight fixed on her scope. Even if her eyesight was obscured, she was determined to kill that damn infected creature…!
Bang! Bang!
The bullets pierced through the flesh protecting the creature’s brain. Without a single miss, the consecutive shots eventually created a hole big enough to reveal the creature’s brain. Ahyeon pulled the trigger once again towards that hole.
“Ugh.”
Boom!
Ahyeon fell back, watching the infected collapse and unable to get up. She let out a satisfied smile.
“That’s refreshing.”
