The Way that Noble Ghost Survives

Episode 1

I really thought it couldn’t be more perfect than this. I had possessed the body of Avery Grand, an extra in a romance novel, and fortunately, Avery’s family was suitably prestigious and wealthy.

In my previous life as an orphan, there was no one by my side. Therefore, the sudden possession felt like a gift.

Avery Grand had family and friends.

They became her everything in a short amount of time, something she had never had before.

Although a series of murders would soon occur in the plot of the novel, and I couldn’t remember what role Avery played, it was something unrelated to me.

I would enjoy this peace and abundance!

* * *

It really was like that…

Thud.

With the sound of something deeply embedding, Avery Grand collapsed onto the cold floor. A terrible pain radiated from her abdomen. As her vision blurred, a red hibiscus descended before her eyes.

Red hibiscus. Avery recalled a paragraph from the original novel that she had forgotten.

In a sparsely populated alley, the body of a woman was discovered. The victim was Avery Grand, the noble daughter of a prestigious count family. Since it was a crime against nobility, the royal family stepped in to find the culprit, but no small evidence was found. The only thing left at the murder scene was a single red hibiscus. It was the beginning of a series of murders.

Was I the first victim of the serial murders? This important detail just came to me now?

Avery barely managed to lower her head to look at her body. Her abdomen, stabbed by a knife, was soaked in blood, making it impossible to see the wound properly. The bright red liquid flowing from her body seeped into the cracked floor without any sign of stopping.

At this rate, I would die.

“No… way…”

I couldn’t die like this. Because…

“I haven’t enjoyed everything yet…”

What a sweet life I had gained!

The lavish banquet set up by the count’s family and all kinds of luxuries flickered before my eyes.

I couldn’t die feeling unjust. Even if I died, I would enjoy everything before I went. If I died, I would become a ghost and wander the afterlife!

“I can never die…”

Avery squeezed out the last of her strength and moved her body toward the light. But that was only for a moment. Her outstretched hand lost its power and fell to the floor, and her barely open eyes began to close.

It was a blackout.

* * *

“What is happening…?”

“…What should we do…!”

Avery quietly watched those around her with expressions as if the world was collapsing.

“Our baby. If you can’t get up like this… I… I…”

Her already fragile mother staggered and fell into her father’s arms. In the room were the mansion’s servants, the family doctor, and family members, all of their gazes fixed on one bed. On that bed lay a woman.

The woman had long, deep purple hair that reminded one of violets. Her condition wasn’t good. Her skin was pale enough that it wouldn’t be surprising if she died soon, and even that light was fading.

Who is that dying woman? That woman is…

Bang.

At that moment, someone violently threw open the door and entered.

“Avery!”

Though the introduction was stolen, yes. That’s right. The dying woman over there is Avery Grand. The very same Avery who is standing here now.

The man who entered the room strode up to the bed and confirmed that Avery was still in a daze. Like her, his deep purple hair was damp with sweat.

“What on earth is…?”

The man, with a bewildered expression, was Oliver Grand. Avery’s biological brother.

You can’t believe it either, right? I can’t believe it either. This situation.

She was standing here just fine, yet another Avery lay in bed, unable to open her eyes. It took Avery two days after waking up to understand this bizarre situation.

In her third year of possession, Avery had become a ghost.

Avery moved her body and lightly reached out to touch the back of Oliver’s head.

Whoosh.

As expected, rather than feeling his head, her hand passed right through. Oliver shuddered for a moment.

Could he feel even a chill?

For the sake of her worried parents, she wanted to open her eyes and tell them she was okay, but no matter what she did, she couldn’t return to her original body. Avery touched her own body lying down. Just like before, it passed through.

In movies about out-of-body experiences, they always seem to return to their bodies just fine!

“We’ve done everything we can…”

The count’s physician, Horn, spoke gloomily.

“Why can’t my daughter wake up?”

“The young lady lost too much blood, and the discovery was too late to guarantee recovery… Hic!”

“Bring my daughter back!”

Before Horn could finish his words, the count grabbed him by the collar.

“No! Don’t do that!”

Avery urgently tried to intervene, but her voice could not reach her father.

She anxiously watched Horn’s body shake uncontrollably. More specifically, she looked at Horn’s head, where only a few strands of hair barely clung on.

Just hold on a bit longer! Without that hair, Horn will really become bald!

Horn, who knew this fact better than anyone, stiffened his neck and endured the count’s grip. Fortunately, a major incident did not occur.

The count, who was naturally only talented in thinking, could not withstand his rapidly declining strength and released Horn. Horn hurriedly fixed his clothes before quickly patting down his hair.

Horn shouldn’t have to look at the floor…

Avery couldn’t bear to look away from the few strands of hair that had fallen to the ground.

“My daughter…”

Oh no, wake up!

The most serious issue right now was herself.

If she couldn’t wake up like this…

“Please… Avery…”

As anxiety gradually rose, Oliver sat down on the floor beside the bed and took Avery’s lifeless hand in his.

“If you just wake up, I’ll do anything for you…”

Holding his younger sister’s frail hand, Oliver earnestly repeated his words. He soon buried his face in it. Shortly after, a sob could be heard. A pang of sadness hit her heart.

They had fought a lot, but family was still family.

Maybe he’d treat her like an older brother when she wakes up.

…But what was that?

“Hmm…”

“Sorry to interrupt your crying, big brother. Are you, by any chance, wiping your snot on my hand?”

“Hmm… Hic…”

“I appreciate your concern, but could you please let go now? Or at least wipe your snot?”

Though she couldn’t feel the touch of his hand, watching the snot get wiped in real-time made it feel like the sensation was being transmitted directly. It gave her chills.

“I’m not going to say you need to lose weight since you’ve gained a lot lately… Okay?”

“The weight of a human can’t be constant. You gain and lose weight; that’s just how humans are. Of course, I’m consistently gaining…”

“I’ll keep quiet about how you suddenly started using weird noble speech when you were 17 and sounded ridiculous…”

“I was just unfamiliar with noble speech from novels back then. I’m not like that anymore.”

“I won’t tell anyone about how you confessed to my friend just one day after meeting them…”

“I had only just possessed this body and didn’t know the beauty standards here! I thought he looked handsome! And You’ve already told everyone all you needed to tell. You’re still talking about it!”

Surely, the servants in the room could hear everything; was there nothing he couldn’t say in front of others?

“Actually…”

This must not be discovered, even if I die.

I’m already dying, but still!

“You…”

No! Not that!

Oh God! Please let me live just this once! I will live righteously from now on!

“That is absolutely not allowed!”

With a scream that sounded like a cry, my body moved first. I jumped toward the bed with a lighter movement.

Please, if there is a God, save me… Just let me hit that bastard once. No, just let me silence that bastard, please…

In an instant, the surroundings fell silent, and when I came to my senses…

“Ugh!”

Avery had already risen and was covering the cursed Olive’s mouth.
