“I wonder what it was?”
After Randall left the room, Sophia was bewildered, and Orion next to her burst into laughter.
“Ah, that was something good to see!”
“What’s wrong all of a sudden?”
“What’s wrong? Didn’t you notice? He was definitely jealous.”
“Jealous!?”
“Hey, Isolte?”
“Yes, I also perceived it that way.”
In the end, because Randall had left, there was one extra cup of tea left, and Isolde chuckled happily as she cleaned up.
“He was jealous because his wife had given Orion some chocolate to eat.”
“No way.”
Randall was a husband who avoided Sophia and didn’t even come home. He couldn’t be jealous. And the other party was Orion. Impossible.
However, Orion and Isolte were grinning, perhaps remembering Randall’s behavior.
“Even though your husband has an attitude like that, he does care about his wife. I’m relieved.”
“I wonder if that’s true?”
While she would be happy if that were true, Sophia was skeptical as she was always met with coldness.
As she savored the chocolate the king had given her, she suddenly remembered the boy who had asked about her earlier.
“Randall’s arrival cut us off completely. What do you think about Theo, Orion?”
Theo was the black-haired boy she had asked about earlier. He was one year younger than Sophia, and lived in her neighborhood when she was living in the city.
Theo had not known that Sophia had been taken in by the castle, but he had recently heard her name at the tavern “Crescent Moon” run by his father, and learned that she had married Randall, so he hurriedly came to visit.
However, Theo, dressed in a dirty shirt and trousers, almost got turned away at the door, when Sophia, who happened to be looking out the window, noticed him and let him in.
“Something’s starting to seem fishy now.”
“I think so too.”
Orion and Isolte, who had been listening to Theo’s conversation, nodded.
Isolte knew that a man claiming to be Sophia’s father had appeared the day before yesterday. Or rather, Randall had sent a notice to the servants of the duke’s household, instructing them to turn away Gasur if he showed up.
Theo had come to see Sophia about Gasur.
“They said that Gasur mentioned my name and said, ‘With this, I’ll never have to worry about food again’.”
Gasur was apparently a regular at the Crescent Moon restaurant run by Theo’s father. He loved gambling and is always being chased by debt collectors, but recently he’s been doing well and in a good mood, and apparently goes home after eating fine alcohol and meat every day.
When one of the regulars asked Gasur why, he apparently said something like, “I got a daughter named Sophia, and thanks to her, I’ll never have to worry about food again”.
“It’s as if he’s trying to make money off Sophia. There’s no way someone like that could be Sophia’s father!”
Isolte was indignant and put her teacup down.
“Well, maybe it’s because he’s Sophia’s real father that he thought his daughter would have an easy life because she had become a duchess – but if that’s the case, it’s odd that he’s already doing so well. After all, Gasur and Sophia only met the day before yesterday, and no one has given them any money.”
“That’s right, Sir Orion!”
“So, is there something going on?”
“I see. Anyway, let’s wait for the investigation of the arena. Theo said he’d also investigate Gasur’s surroundings, right?”
“Yes.”
Theo has always been a kind boy to Sophia. Until shortly before Sophia was taken to the castle, he was like a bully who led the young kids in the neighborhood, but now he seems to have settled down and is helping his father run the store.
Remembering the face of the boy who once dirtied his cheeks, showed his missing teeth, and said, “I’ll protect Sophia for life,” Sophia let out a small sigh, thinking she just had to be careful.
