The Secret Circumstances of the Fake Ducal Couple

SCFDC I Chapter 10

Jane’s Purpose

Cain opened his mouth and wanted to answer everything. But he thought that if he brings this up, the conversation will be too long.

He picked up his pen without hesitation as he has to come up with a list of things he had to do.

“That’s for later to talk about.”

“I’m sad.”

“If you want more work, then tell me now.”

“Who was wondering? I’m not curious of anything. I have a lot of work to do.”

Nathan said clearly. He hesitated, as if he had more to say. Cain pointed towards his watch. He urged Nathan to say it quickly if he had anything to say.

Nathan sighed.

“Does she know?”

“What?”

“The secret about your parents’ deaths.”

The ancestral Duke of Hastings died at the hands of rebels.

“It’s also related to that girl’s parents.”

The names of the ancestral Duke and Duchess of Hastings were included in the list to exterminate the rebels. It was Gyllan Whitney who reviewed the list of extermination.

If the rebellion had succeeded, the Whitney would have overthrown the Duke of Hastings.

Cain’s eyes deepened. Cain was lost in his thoughts.

At the time, Cain was angry about the facts related to his parents’ death.

Without knowing it, he lived as a royal dog for two full years in order to win Whitney’s reinstatement.

There was absolutely no need for that. What betrayed him at that time was the Whitney family.

At that time, Phil handed out a letter to him as he was having a hard time.

〈This is a letter that Lady Jane gave me two years ago. The duke has left right away and I am finally delivering this to you.〉

The letter was full of harsh words. The first page was full of curses and resentment toward the Hastings, and the second was full of criticism towards Cain’s incompetence.

She trampled Cain’s love and reduced their precious memories to ashes.

That letter completely ignited his love for Jane and his lingering affection for Jane.

He could comfortably wish for Whitney’s complete downfall.

“Keep it a secret for now. If everyone involved is dead then, there’s nothing to say.”

“Yes, I understand. And are you going to keep going out to the gentlemen’s clubs?”

“Why are you asking the obvious?”

“Now that you’re married, I was wondering if you should cut back on your night outs. There will be strange rumors going around.”

“I am already rumored to be a playboy.”

“That’s true, but there is no need to add to the rumor that you are an adulterous man. It’s actually unfair to be a playboy If you aren’t, isn’t it?”

It was literally a rumor that Cain slept with many women. They said that it was true that Cain often went up to hotel rooms connected to ladies’ and gentlemen’s clubs, but he only did so to get other information.

Of course, some of the women misunderstood and turned it up on Cain. Cain politely rejected the women each time.

Then the women, whose pride was hurt, started a strange rumor the next day. She said she had an amazing night with Cain.

Cain did not correct the rumor.

“It’s not unfair at all. So, look at it yourself.”

“You don’t feel wronged? I’d rather object it if it was me in your place with that face and that perfect body.”

Cain, who had laughed at Nathan’s complaint, was about to bow his head to him with his papers.

“Let me ask you one more question. When are you going to tell Miss Jane about Master Joseph?”

“Joseph thing? what?”

Cain had no idea what Nathan was talking about. Jane and Joseph haven’t even officially said hello yet, so what can I say to her?

“What I’m saying is that Master Joseph is not your biological son. Master Joseph is actually… … .”

Cain, who had been listening to him silently, raised his hand to silence Nathan.

“It’s not that I’m going to do anything, it’s just that you don’t miss those details.”

“Just stop there.”

His expression was stern and sturdy.

“All right. I won’t say more.”

It was obvious that if he said any more, he would be scolded harshly, so Nathan silenced himself and returned to his seat.

Nathan said he knew why Cain had Joseph, but he couldn’t agree with his decision to hide his son from everyone.

Because Joseph s none other than ‘his’ son.

“Stop thinking.”

“All right. I’ll just do my work.”

He saw Nathan pulling the papers that were piled high forward, and Cain turned his attention to those papers as well.

“But why Miss Jane?”

His hand stopped flipping through two pages of those documents. Nathan’s question suddenly came to his mind.

Norbert asked the same thing.

However, Norbert’s question contained a faint resentment.

He was worried that he would completely ruin Jane’s life.

“Isn’t it rather that I saved her?”

He believed hat if it weren’t for him, she would have been taken away by the bastard he knew as Victor and lived a miserable life.

There is a possibility that it won’t be a happy ending, but at least he will give Jane a chance.

Will it break, or… … .

The kindness on Cain’s face was about to disappear and his cold inner self was revealed.

Suddenly, a knock was heard.

“It’s Jane.”

Nathan jerked his head up at the appearance of an uninvited guest.

* * *

Jane, standing in front of Cain’s office, took a deep breath. She had left her luggage in the room following Norbert’s guidance.

Jane’s room was a north-facing guest room.

As a duchess-to-be, she stayed at Somnium House, but Jane did not find those rooms useful.

‘I’m sorry, ma’am.’

Norbert looked very guilty as he led the way to the room.

But Jane liked the room.

‘I will suggest to the Duke that he change your room.’

‘Don’t do that, Norbert. I am satisfied,’

Jane said with all her sincerity.

Although she didn’t get much sunlight, it was twice as big and extravagant as Jane’s previous home on the hill.

There was a large window, and the walls were covered with light blue wallpaper with a hint of water in it. The bed with a canopy was large enough for three adults to lie down. There was also a fluffy blanket filled with goose down.

There was a musty smell in the room, and hot water was gushing out of the bathroom.

That was enough.

Even without fancy tapestries or furniture decorated with gold trim, it’s enough.

The best thing about it is that it is far from the space that Cain uses.

Jane’s room is at the end of the 4th floor. Cain’s space is on the second floor.

Still, the fact that they were under one roof did not change. A sharp pain was felt in her chest.

Jane, bereft of her purpose, was confused. Until the morning he told Jane that his purpose was for her to become Cain’s wife and the mother of his child. But on her way back, her purpose crumbled into dust and disappeared.

So then why should I be here?

What Cain proposed was only his purpose. He said he needed Jane for a purpose that he had set for himself. She has been living like that for seven years.

She didn’t need to create something new. She had one purpose with Cain.

She is letting go of her regret and guilt about him.

She doesn’t love him more.

‘Okay, that’s enough.’

Once she had a purpose, her distracting thoughts disappeared.

Jane walked slowly around her room, assessing her future life.

He said her to prepare for their wedding,

‘He asked me to prepare for our wedding, so should I start by matching our dress? Or from the wedding date? What should I do?’

Usually, a nobleman’s marriage was prepared and promoted by their parents.

All the parties involved in marriage had to do was show their faces and convey their intentions when their parents called them when necessary.

But Jane and Cain had no parents.

She had never had a specific conversation about what to do next.

Jane has already received a lot from him. So she wanted to do well in what she had decided to do.

She couldn’t put pressure on his family again.

Jane headed to Cain’s office to discuss the details of their deal.

Jane traced her memory and went to his office without any guidance.

She didn’t have a single maid coming and going in the hallway on the floor that Cain used as his living room. It seemed like he has given a separate command to them, because Cain liked to be quiet.

She raised her hand to knock on her door. However, she did not
knock willingly and repeatedly raised and lowered her hand.

‘Please break up with Cain.’

The voice of Mrs. Hastings, who had been speaking while holding her hand tightly, came back to life. Jane’s body cooled down quickly.

Jane continued to massage her hand and took a deep breath.

It was a memory she had to overcome in order to live here.

She barely knocked, Jane was biting hard on the inside of her mouth.

“It’s Jane.”

There was no answer coming from inside her.

She checked the schedule with Norbert, but was there any change in the meantime?

Just as Jane was about to turn her steps, the door opened.

The light brown haired young man’s eyes widened for a moment before returning to their normal size.

“May the glory of the Goddess be with you. This is Nathan. It is an
honor to meet you, Lady Jane.”

“May the Goddess’ blessing be with you. This is Jane Whitney. Duke’s… … .”

“I know, you are his Fiancé. The duke is inside.”

Instead of Jane, who hesitated because she didn’t know how to explain, Nathan finished the introduction in a smart way.

Jane nodded her head and entered the open door. Jane’s eyes widened when she saw him in the office.

The location of the office was the same as in the past, but the appearance inside was completely different.

Thanks to this, Jane was able to avoid recalling her last memories here.

In a room with a high ceiling, there were shelves full of books on the left and right walls.

And the sofa and table for guests disappeared, replaced by a large oval-shaped desk.

“This is the desk we use for meetings.”

Nathan explained as Jane’s eyes landed on the desk. He then pointed to the end of the bookshelf on the left.

“Your Excellency is inside there.”

The arched door was hidden by bookshelves.

“I am going to take a short trip to run an errand for Your Excellency. Please feel free to talk.”

After explaining that, Nathan went out, leaving Jane alone. There was no bird for Jane to catch.

Norbert and Nathan were both quick-moving people.

Jane, who was standing there in a daze, was struck by the wind

blowing through the open window and was reminded of her purpose for coming to his office.

He may have heard her and Nathan talking, but she did not see Cain.

Jane stood in front of the arched door, worried that she might be shut out like this.

Could it be that he was so focused that he couldn’t hear?

From long ago, when he was engrossed in one thing, he would not be able to hear the sounds around him.

Thinking that she would have to go back when he was busy, Jane skipped knocking and quietly opened the door.

And she froze.

Cain was in front of her.

Sitting in the sunlight pouring in through the huge arched window on the right, he looked like a part of the sun.

Cain was looking through the papers. He must have been concentrating, as deep wrinkles appeared between his eyebrows.

Jane’s mouth did not open easily. She felt a desire to see more of that wonderful sight.

“You gaze is piercing me.”

But Jane’s greed was quickly cut short.
