Chapter 88

I visited the Handley family’s estate after reading a letter from Lady Handley, which shared the happy news that she was pregnant.

“Congratulations on your pregnancy, Lady Handley.”

“Thank you, Duchess. I can’t believe you’re here to congratulate me in person…”

“How could I not come when I heard such wonderful news?”

I gave Anna a look, and she stepped forward, holding out a beautifully wrapped gift box.

“It’s a small gift. Some snacks that are good to eat during pregnancy and baby clothes.”

“Your Grace…”

Lady Handley clasped her hands, looking deeply touched.

“I’ll be sure to tell the baby that I received such a lovely gift from you. Thank you so much.”

She placed her hand on her flat stomach, still early in her pregnancy.

I smiled, happy to see her reaction.

We sat down at the table, and soon a maid entered with some tea and snacks.

‘Oh?’

The maid’s face looked strangely familiar. After staring at her for a while, our eyes met.

‘Ah! I remember now!’

I recalled where I had seen her before. As the maid finished setting the table and looked up, she bowed politely when she saw me.

“I’ve wanted to see you again, Your Grace. You may not remember, but you gave me extra bread when you visited the temple with the volunteers.”

“Ah, yes. I remember.”

It was when I first volunteered. She had been holding a baby, and I secretly called her over to give her more bread, pretending to drop it.

When she heard that I remembered her, she was a bit surprised but then smiled softly.

“I’m so glad you remember. I wanted to thank you for that day. That’s why I asked the head maid to let me serve you today.”

“I see. May I ask your name?”

“My name is Remy.”

“Remy. What a lovely name. I’ll remember it.”

Remy blushed and bowed her head shyly.

“…It’s an honor.”

After Remy left, Lady Handley smiled warmly.

“I met Remy at the vocational training school run by the Prince. I hired three people from there and was so satisfied that I plan to visit again if I need more help.”

“Ah, so that’s how you hired her.”

“Yes, it’s a school that trains the lower class and connects them with businesses and noble households that need workers. It’s becoming more popular because employers don’t need to provide much training.”

I was happy to hear this. Especially since Remy now had a steady income and could properly take care of her child.

“It’s amazing that your paths crossed.”

“Haha, yes, it is. Both Remy and I have received help from you, Your Grace.”

“It was such a small thing, though. Anyone could have done it.”

I felt a little embarrassed and waved my hand, but Lady Handley shook her head and gently pressed her ring on the chain around her neck.

“Even if it was small, it was you who reached out to help me.”

“Then I’ll gratefully accept your thanks, Lady Handley.”

I couldn’t deny her words, especially when she spoke so firmly. I simply accepted their gratitude with a smile.

I felt full without having eaten and absentmindedly fiddled with my teacup.

After chatting for a while, it was time to leave. Lady Handley seemed sad to see me go and bid me farewell.

“I’m sorry to see you go so soon, Your Grace.”

“If I weren’t so busy preparing for the party, I would have stayed longer. I’m also sad, but there’s nothing I can do.”

“A party? Are you hosting one?”

“Yes, I was planning to send out the invitations the day after tomorrow.”

I handed her the invitation I had prepared earlier.

“You’re the first to hear about it.”

“Oh…”

Lady Handley smiled and placed her hand on her flat belly again. I smiled and gently shook my head.

“I only brought it along on the way, so please don’t feel burdened by it. I hope we can meet again after your pregnancy settles.”

“I’ll be looking forward to your letters.”

“I’ll be happy to receive them.”

After saying our goodbyes, I got into the carriage, which slowly started to move.

‘Once I get back… Hmm…’

As I thought about what I needed to do, the carriage passed through the bustling streets.

I stretched because I felt stiff. Then, I locked eyes with Anna, who had been looking at me.

“Anna, why are you staring?”

Anna hesitated for a moment before answering.

“I heard the good news, and I was just wondering about the two of you… What will your baby look like?”

“…!”

My face instantly turned red. I realized that from Anna’s perspective, we must look like a normal married couple, so it made sense for her to think that. But still…

“I wonder who the baby will take after?”

“Cough!“

I ended up choking on my breath. While coughing, my mind started imagining her question.

‘The baby will probably take after Harold.’

The day after he gave me the bracelet, Harold’s childhood portrait was so cute. His features were sharp for a child, and his chubby cheeks looked so soft that I just wanted to pinch them.

Though nothing will happen between us.

Just then, the carriage suddenly stopped. My body lurched forward, almost hitting my forehead on the seat.

“Anna, are you okay?”

Anna groaned as her head hit the wall.

“Yes… I’m fine.”

“Let me see.”

Fortunately, she only had a red mark on her forehead, and there seemed to be no other injury. I told her to visit the doctor when we got home and looked out the window.

‘I’m not there yet.’

We had just passed the bustling area and were now entering the residential district. Bare trees and walls were visible. As I opened the carriage door, I heard a guard harshly speaking to someone.

“What are you doing, suddenly cutting in like that? Get out of the way!”

“…”

“When will you stop standing there like a stone, Your Highness?”

…Your Highness?

I furrowed my brow and moved toward the front of the carriage.

Could it really be…?

As I approached, I saw that it was indeed Kaiden.

‘Did he really just step in front of the carriage?’

What is he thinking? I wondered, but as soon as our eyes met, Kaiden dismounted from his horse.

The guard tried to stop him from approaching me, but Kaiden stubbornly only looked at me, as though he wouldn’t move until he had resolved whatever he had come for.

I sighed and told the guard to step aside.

“It’s okay, just move.”

“But Madam…”

“Wait here.”

The guard reluctantly stepped back, and I looked up at Kaiden.

“Why did you jump in front of the carriage so recklessly, Your Highness?”

Kaiden’s lips, which I thought would never open, finally did.

“…I don’t know either.”

What? He came here without even knowing why?

“I thought I wouldn’t understand you for the rest of my life.”

Kaiden’s voice was low and self-deprecating as he looked down at the ground.

I followed his gaze and noticed his shadow stretching out to my feet.
