The Peaceful Life of a Maid Who Hides Her Power and Enjoys It

<Episode 56>

Look who was talking.

“That’s what I say. I learnt it from you in the first place, Mr. Rue.”

His face was still stained with deep bewilderment, so I had no choice but to reassure him.

“I know that there’s no way Mr. Rue likes me.”

“I feel like I’ve heard that phrase a few times.”

“That’s why I sometimes wonder; why do you treat me specially at times when you don’t even like me?”

Rue, as if he’d happened upon a peculiar sentence while he was reading a book, repeated my words.

“Miss Daisy is special to me.”

“Are you going to deny it?”

“No.”

What was the no for? Was he denying that I was special to him? Or was he denying the question of whether it was true or not?

“Daisy Fager is very special to me. Ah, yes. Of course.”

“…….”

“You are the most special presence in my life, Daisy. Perhaps I was born just to meet you. No, that must have been it, right? Maybe I was conceived in my mother’s womb to meet you, endured a dog-like childhood, and went through everything just for this.”

 “…”

“You are my light, my salt, my beginning, and my end. Even in death, your face will not leave my mind. If I could die while looking at your face, I would have no more wishes…”

“I’m sorry. Please stop the teasing.”

“But can’t I like you?”

Rather than just testing the waters, his expression showed genuine curiosity, so I responded sincerely.

“If you want to say that you like me as a colleague, then I’ll answer that you should like me as much as you want.”

“Then I’ll like you too.”

“…….”

“What about Miss Daisy?”

“…….”

“You like me, don’t you? Ah, of course, as a colleague.”

I answered with clenched teeth.

“Me, too, a little, yes.”

Rue smiled as ecstatically as the sunlight that poured after a rainshower.

“Is that so? Well, well, I’m very touched. So this is what it feels like to experience camaraderie. I could almost cry.”

He rubbed his perfectly dry eyes and turned to the book again.

That day, while staring blankly at Rue’s face as he read in the carriage, I found out a new fact.

Rue’s eyes did not follow the letters.

Rue wasn’t reading a book. He was thinking about something else as he kept the book open. On and on.

‘What are you thinking about?’

For something to bother Rue enough to absorb him into thought – I wondered how great of an issue it was.

The whistle blew long.

I stepped off the train with a barely awake body.

I bumped into at least three people while walking. Normally, I would have avoided even a speck of dust, but now it was unavoidable. Because I was sleepy.

“Hah.”

It was strange.

‘When I’m with Rue, I sleep strangely deeply.’

I didn’t sleep a lot. And I wasn’t the type to sleep deeply either.

In particular, in the first week of employment at the Weatherwoods mansion, it was rare for me to get more than five hours of sleep. I had a good night’s sleep on the day I first achieved a step of complete body and mental unity, The first day at the Noble Council Meeting, and the night at the Iregiel villa.

In short, most of those days had been with Rue.

“Straight ahead.”

Rue, who was walking ahead of me, turned, coming to my side and touched my left shoulder.

“Yes.”

“You answer well.”

“Yes.”

My inability to sleep deeply was most likely an after-effect of the war.

I wouldn’t have connected the two in the past, but it was different now.

‘Thanks to Rue telling me to get to know myself…’

I realised that the magic war might be over, but my inner one wasn’t.

“Miss Daisy.”

Basically, I was having trouble sleeping because of anxiety.

I had to lie with my back against the wall to fall asleep quicker. This was because of the habit I’d developed while preparing for the devil army’s attacks at dawn…

“Miss Daisy.”

“Yes.”

“You’re out of it.”

From some point, Rue had started walking with a hand on my shoulder.

Even though he was conscious of his good looks and was wearing a tacky straw hat on his head, every passing person seemed to steal glances at Rue’s face.

Rue must find his handsomeness a hassle.

“To this address. How long does it take?”

Rue held out a note with an address to a coachman.

“Ten minutes is enough to get there.”

Let’s continue with what we were thinking.

After returning to a woman’s body, I originally tried to let go of the sword completely.

It was because I didn’t want to repeat my life as a swordsman.

The reason why I trained every night was precisely because of my insomnia. It was a waste of time doing nothing, so I thought I should at least train.

Thanks to this, my pledge to myself to lay the sword down amounted to nothing. Although, I wasn’t training to the point of exhaustion like before, so there was that.

“Both of you look young. Are you married?”

“There was a time when we were.”

“Oh… I see, ha-ha!”

Not too intense. But also not too light. Short sessions lasting one hour, or longer ones lasting two hours. Ultimately, it was a good thing. I was able to quickly become accustomed to wielding a sword with my unfamiliar body.

That’s why I was even more curious.

‘Why is it Rue?’

Why can I sleep more comfortably next to Rue?

‘As expected, because Rue is strong?’

Since he was a strong ally, I wondered if his presence reduced my anxiety and relieved my tension subconsciously, making it easier to fall asleep.

“We have arrived, sir.”

But if that was the case, what about Raphael?

Raphael was the second strongest swordsman, second only to the swordmaster. There was no obstacle that we couldn’t get through together.

No way, was Rue secretly using a sleeping spell on me…

“Miss Daisy.”

A cool hand touched the back of my neck.

At that moment, I came to my senses.

My dim vision seemed to brighten up. Before I knew it, we were standing in front of an old mansion.

A withered garden. Dusty windows that hadn’t been properly cleaned. Overgrown and messy ivy vines on the walls. It was a dilapidated mansion, just as dreary as the Weatherwoods Manor two months ago.

“Is this the place?”

“Miss Daisy, how many days has it been since you last slept?”

“…three days?”

Was it three days? What’s certain was that I hadn’t slept for at least two days now.

Rue, arching down, looked into my eyes.

“You usually don’t sleep well, but seem to hold out well. Is three days the final line?”

It seems like it. I was lost in thought for a moment, but seeing that we had arrived at our destination, I snapped back.

Rue didn’t mock my absent-minded face like he usually did. Instead, he straightened his bowing back and advised me.

“You had better go to sleep early today. I’ll be by your side.”

With how naturally he said it, I almost nodded and said I would.

I asked him blankly.

“I figured I’d ask. Have you ever casted a sleeping spell on me?”

Rue raised an eyebrow as if to say, “What nonsense,” and then let out a short sigh, accompanied by a mysterious smile.

“Not exactly. I did however help you relax and brush away your worries by patting your back before you slept. But I don’t believe I’ve sung you a lullaby yet?”

“…Are you joking? I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not because my head feels dazed right now.”

“It’s all right. I like the quiet Miss Daisy, too.”

Well, then there’s no problem.

‘…what did I just ask him?’

While I was trying to recollect my memories, Rue rang the doorbell.

Following the sound of the creaking wooden door, a young maid rushed out of the mansion. With bright blonde hair and distinct freckles, the girl looked at us with a puzzled expression. “W-Who are you…”

“Weatherwoods.”

“…Oh! Are you servants sent by the head maid of the Weatherwoods mansion?”

I nodded.

“P-Please come in. The master is waiting. I am Lenya, a maid of this mansion. I heard there were two of you… So, the taller one next to you, with the key, is the Weatherwoods’ cook and gardener…”

She paused. As the maid, Lenya, looked at Rue’s face, her mouth dropped open in astonishment.

“Oh, my goodness! The… the blue hair and golden eyes! Could it be! Oh my…”

Then she fell to the floor with a flop.

“…….”

What was this?

No matter how long I waited, Lenya didn’t wake up.

‘She really fainted.’

The situation was so absurd that it finally snapped me back to reality.

I knew it probably wasn’t him, but I looked back at Rue just in case.

“Did you just do something?”

Rue shrugged his shoulders in denial.

Then why? Did she just faint because of seeing a handsome guy?

I carried Lenya on my shoulder and entered the mansion.

The master whom Lenya mentioned must be the ‘old man who helps the Weatherwoods family’ we were visiting.

With the thought of first laying down our luggage, we headed towards the reception room on the first floor.

As I stepped in, a petite old man sitting by the sunny window turned to look at me.

“Oh my…” Thud. He pushed his chair back and stood up, his white hair in disarray, and exclaimed in astonishment.

“T-that blue hair and golden eyes-! No way!”

He was acting strange as well. Was he going to faint like Lenya too?

“Whoa, whoa.”

Having gently lowered Lenya to the ground, I approached the old man to calm him down while preparing for any unforeseen circumstances.

At his age, a fall to the ground could be fatal. The old man had an incredulous expression on his face. With trembling fingers, he pointed at Rue’s face, which was beyond any comparison in its exquisite beauty.

“T-That face, so beautiful that it could make the goddess of beauty jealous!”

“Calm down. He’s just an unmannered handsome guy.”

“Could it be… you…”

To be honest,

I thought the old man would at best mistakenly refer to him as ‘Viscount Weatherwoods.’ or ‘God of Beauty.’

But,

“Calepa!”

Of all the words he could’ve said, I hadn’t expected that one.

They’re married, your honor.

On a more serious note, I love how this novel approaches topics like trauma and romance so easily. It’s really funny and soft at the same time, as well as punches you in the gut unexpectedly. My poor Daisy never had the opportunity to grow used to life after the war before this. I want nothing but happiness for her.

And a good amount of sleep.

Also I love their banter lmao

Btw guys, please refrain from posting any type of spoilers, I hatee them, just saying in advance.

Also, I saw the many comments on chapter 52 the other day and it made my day to see so many people were reading this novel hehe

I don’t believe I’ve commented before but I just wanted to say I’m low-key obsessed with this novel and your translation is really good! Rue and Daisy really are perfectly matched lmao

    1. Ami says:

Gah thank you! I try my best lol. I’m glad you’re enjoying this novel hehe I love it too

  4. Lady Godiva says:

Oh, I love the these two. But I can’t hep worrying about Raphael and Daisy’s relationship. Will Raphael fall into the second male lead syndrome? Thanks for the updates.
    Thanks for the accurate translations.

  5. Vac700r says:

I too like that the story shows she has PTSD and the different ways the symptoms manifest. Many people with mental health issues are functional members of society so other people rarely are aware of these people’s silent struggles.

It’s good that Rue is understandable and gives tip to lessen or alleviate some of her demon.

  6. Tj says:

mmm, this story is really subtle and graceful, its dark and light things are really exquisitely balanced. I enjoy it so much, and your translation is something I really enjoy. Thanks

  7. Izuma says:

I actually wonder if Daisy being able to sleep soundly around Rue is related to her soul? Like… something about him stabilizes her shattered soul or something?

    Onwards we read!!!!
