Chapter 140
(Special Side Story Chapter 5)
Unlike Ruth, who was always cautious and soft-hearted, Aria was bold and expressed her opinions without holding back.
Her older brother, Samuel, was embarrassed, saying, “She was born with a bad health, so she’s been raised so carefully and preciously that she’s sometimes spoiled,” but the two children with completely opposite personalities surprisingly got along well.
“I know. Grass is just grass. When I was little, I believed that four-leaf clovers really brought good luck and granted wishes, but…”
Ruth’s voice gradually became quieter.
“Now I know why it’s called that. It’s a hard grass to find, so if you happened to find a four-leaf clover, you probably thought you were lucky. I also know that my mom became my mom and that I had a younger sibling, it wasn’t because I found a four-leaf clover, but because various circumstances coincided with luck.”
“Even though you know that, why are you still looking for it?”
“I don’t know, I guess I just thought it would make my heart feel a little lighter to find a four-leaf clover. I thought it would give me hope that Edwin wouldn’t forget me when I went to the Academy.”
“That’s so stupid.”
Aria muttered as if scolding him and picked a few white clover flowers. Then she skillfully made a bracelet and tied it around Ruth’s arm.
When Ruth tried to make her a similar bracelet in return, Aria muttered to herself.
“I don’t want a bracelet, I want a ring.”
“Okay, I understand.”
Aria slipped the flower ring Ruth had made onto her left ring finger and continued her story.
“Like you said, a four-leaf clover isn’t going to make your wish come true, and honestly, we’re not young enough to believe in that, are we?”
If Evelia had heard it, she would have laughed at how cute it was, and if Samuel had heard it, he would have laughed in disbelief, but Aria was serious.
“If I were you, I’d play with Edwin more and not look for a four-leaf clover, and maybe if you get to know him better, he won’t forget about you while you’re away at the Academy and actually miss you.”
“……!”
“While you were in the Kingdom of Cesia, I read a lot of books because I was bored. I like storybooks, but I also read books because I was curious about what kind of books you usually read.”
“Really?”
Aria answered brightly, frowning slightly.
“To be honest, I didn’t understand them well, and they weren’t fun. Why on earth do you read such boring books?”
“I find them fun…
“I’ll tell you a much more interesting book next time.”
“Yeah!”
“Anyway! While I was reading a book, there was a sentence that really struck me.”
“What?”
Aria cleared her throat and continued.
“Sometimes people get so caught up in small and trivial things that they don’t see the bigger and more important things.”
“Bigger and more important things?” “Yeah. For example, you’re looking for a four-leaf clover right now, so you can’t see the three-leaf clovers that are all around here!”
Ruth gaped silently for a moment as if he had been caught off guard, then barely managed to answer.
“But a three-leaf clover doesn’t mean anything…”
“Ruth, do you know what the flower language of a three-leaf clover is?”
“… No.”
“Didn’t Sister Eve tell you?”
“Ugh.”
Aria puffed out her chest in triumph.
“She said the flower word for a three-leaf clover is happiness!”
“Ha-happiness?”
“Yeah!”
Aria’s excitement grew when Ruth looked bewildered, as if he didn’t really know.
“You didn’t know? I don’t know why the flower language is happiness either, but that’s what it is!”
“Hm.”
“But you’re going to ignore all this happiness and just look for luck that might or might not exist?”
“……!”
“You’re already happy enough. Even if you don’t expect unexpected luck, you can take control of your own destiny!”
Aria, who had raised her clenched right hand high into the air, smiled as if she felt a little embarrassed.
“Actually, this is something I read in a book. In the book, it said that you should cherish the happiness you already have.”
“Hm.”
“So, it’s hot out here, let’s go to Sylvia and Edwin instead! Wouldn’t it be nice if you made them a flower ring and a flower bracelet? Oh! Let’s make one for Sister Eve too!”
Aria smiled so brightly that her eyes folded and held out her hand. Ruth looked at her white finger, which was wearing the flower ring he had made, for a moment and then carefully took her hand.
“Okay.”
* * *
“Sister Eve!”
“Aria, you’re here? Welcome. I wondered where Ruth was, but he must be with Aria.”
“I caught Ruth looking for a four-leaf clover again!”
“Again? What was the wish for this time?”
“That’s…”
Ruth, who had his hands behind his back, twisted his body.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been here, and Ed didn’t seem to recognize me, so I thought…”
“Bu?”
Edwin, who was in Evelia’s arms, recognized his name like a ghost and turned his head.
His chubby cheeks twitched as he spotted his favorite big brother.
“Booah!”
Ruth walked towards Edwin, who was reaching out his arms to him, as if possessed.
“Well, it seems like he recognizes his big brother, from Mom’s perspective?”
“It does now, but when I first saw him, he was a bit shy.”
“Boo uh!”
Ruth thought for a moment, then stuck out his index finger at Edwin. Edwin’s chubby fingers squeezed his index finger.
‘It’s soft and warm.’
It felt like his heart was turning into fluffy cotton candy. When his first sibling, Sylvia, was born, he felt similar emotions and decided to become a strong knight, but now he wanted to be even stronger.
“Look at this. Ed is saying, ‘I love you so much, big brother!’”
“Big brother too… really love you, Ed.”
As if he understood, Edwin drooled and giggled.
Ruth wiped the drool off with his sleeve and remembered that he had made flower bracelets for his siblings.
Aria, who had just come up beside him, whispered in a low voice.
“You should give Edwar a bracelet as a present.”
“Ah.”
Ruth tied the flower bracelet around Edwin’s chubby left wrist, wiggling his fingers.
Evelia exclaimed,
“Oh my.”
“Did Ruth make this for your little brother?”
“Yes. I have one for Sylvia and one for Mom.”
Ruth tied the same bracelet on Evelia’s left wrist and approached Sylvia, who was sleeping soundly on the sofa.
He carefully moved Sylvia, who had both hands on her head, so as not to wake her, and Sylvia woke up.
“Brother?”
“Yes, it’s brother. You can sleep a little longer.”
“But… I want to… play with you….”
“Let’s play together later. Aria is here too.”
“Uhh…”
Ruth smiled and patted Sylvia’s chest. Luckily, Sylvia quickly fell back asleep.
“So, Ruth, did you find the four-leaf clover again?”
Ruth confidently answered Evelia, who asked with a smile.
“No! I’m not going to look for a four-leaf clover anymore.”
Evelia’s eyes widened.
“Why? Did something happen?”
In fact, Evelia wasn’t that happy about her child sweating under the sun and searching for a four-leaf clover.
Although Ruth’s concentration was cute, it reminded her of the days when she’d wandered around the garden in the pouring rain, and it made her heart ache.
Aside from that, she was puzzled by Ruth’s sudden change of attitude.
Could something have happened to the child?
Ruth handed Evelia the three-leaf clover he held most preciously.
He picked and picked the prettiest one among the many clovers.
“Aria says that the flower language of a three-leaf clover is happiness! I’ve decided to value the happiness that’s by my side more than luck!”
The child’s face, smiling as he said that, looked much happier than when he had smiled and said that he had found a four-leaf clover for Evelia.
Evelia smiled, trying hard to hide her sad feelings.
“Really? Then Mom likes a three-leaf clover better than a four-leaf clover.”
This moment was even more touching because I knew how much pain there was until the child who had hoped for luck could confidently say that he was happy.
“So let’s be happy more in the future. Okay?”
“Yes!”
“Yes, Sister!”
“Me… too.”
“Buu!”
Evelia laughed out loud at the four children, each answering in their own way.
She promised herself that she would definitely tell this story to Cassis, who was currently out of town, when he came back.
