Chapter 93
The last game ended rather anticlimactically.
The winner took the money and prize on the table, as well as the voucher for a stay in the newly opened suite, “Utopia.”
People who had gathered in the central hall to watch the game began to scatter, creating a restless atmosphere.
“Everyone, please.”
Yuhwa suddenly stood up, drawing everyone’s attention.
Those who hadn’t yet left gathered around her again. They were all people closely connected to the casino or Utopia.
“Isn’t it a shame to leave like this?”
Yuhwa smiled as she stepped forward.
“By chance, the late Boss Jang had prepared something. How about we all enjoy it together? I’ve also prepared a new stage.”
“That sounds fun, sister.”
Yugyeom, who had stood up, asked with a smile.
“What kind of game is it?”
Yuhwa answered playfully to his question.
“That will be a secret until we go down.”
As she smiled at Yugyeom, her gaze shifted to her father.
His eyes still held not a trace of interest in her. The old man, stiff even in his age, was still only looking at her younger brother.
Yuhwa swallowed her smile and spoke.
“You can look forward to it.”
Following Yuhwa, the VIPs and members of Utopia’s organization moved to a room that had once been used for high-stakes games.
Since these games often involved unconventional wagers due to the high stakes, this was a secluded space reserved exclusively for VIPs.
Below the floating spectator seats, where the stage should have been, there was only darkness with the lights turned off.
“Don’t do anything that lowers the standards. You’ve never done anything I liked.”
Yuhobum clicked his tongue in disapproval.
“This is why a woman shouldn’t be given any position.”
The atmosphere instantly grew heavy. Everyone here was well aware that Utopia’s boss wasn’t fond of Yuhwa.
“Father. I’m looking forward to this.”
Yugyeom, seated beside him, spoke with a smile. His narrowed eyes held a dark shadow.
“It’s the first gift my sister has prepared just for me.”
“That’s right, Father. I’d be disappointed if you’re not pleased with it.”
Yuhwa feigned an unaffected smile. Watching her, Yuhobum simply clicked his tongue again and turned his head away.
“I’m excited to see what Ms. Yuhwa has prepared herself. When does it start?”
Trying to lighten the tense atmosphere, one of Utopia’s executives asked.
Yuhwa, who had been silently gazing out the window, smiled and replied.
“Now.”
Then, she slowly turned her head to look at Yugyeom. His face, meeting her gaze, still wore a smile.
For the first time, Yuhwa found that face pleasing. After all, there’s nothing quite as entertaining as watching a smiling face crumble.
The stage, previously shrouded in darkness, suddenly lit up. Light surged forward like a wave, so bright it was blinding.
“I thought you might like it, so I prepared it.”
For a moment, Yugyeom wished someone—anyone—would tell him he had gone blind.
But, as always, the reality before him was unmistakably clear.
Even within the overwhelming brightness that was so hard to bear, his eyes remained sharp and clear. They overlapped with what he had once seen in the flames.
Despite the distance, he felt as if she was standing right in front of him.
“A Russian roulette with life on the line.”
The man aimed the gun at the woman.
At the same time that Yugyeom stood up, the trigger was pulled.
The cold barrel slowly lifted away from my head, but I still couldn’t move a muscle.
Kang Taejun twisted his lips into a smile as he spun the cylinder of the gun.
“The odds are fair at 17%.”
The moment he pressed the barrel to his own temple, he pulled the trigger almost immediately.
Click.
The bullet didn’t fire, and instead of a gunshot, only the sound of air escaping was heard. Yet, rather than relief, a dizzying anxiety surged within me.
…this time too.
Kang Taejun, still smiling, didn’t blink an eye. Neither did I.
Maybe my heartbeat was louder than the gunshot that would eventually come. The pounding was so intense that I couldn’t think straight.
“Not this time either.”
Kang Taejun spoke with a tone of mild regret, pulling the gun away from my head. I didn’t have any special ability to tell if he was serious or not, but somehow, he seemed genuine.
“Come to think of it, it’s only right that you do it yourself. That’s your fate, after all.”
A gun with a spinning cylinder was shoved right in front of me. But I couldn’t move a single finger. Kang Taejun pulled my frozen hand forward and wrapped each of my fingers around the gun.
“No…!”
The cold, hard sensation of the gun sent chills down my spine. I recoiled, shaking his hand—and the gun—away with all my strength.
“You have to follow the rules, miss.”
But at the same time, his cold grip clamped down on my hand, still holding the gun. It was still stuck to me.
The trigger was pulled again.
“Not this time either. What a shame.”
Before I could catch my breath, the muzzle of the gun turned toward Kang Taejun’s face. The fingers entwined around mine felt cold and rough like snake scales.
What could I possibly call this insane act? Did he really want to risk his own life just to kill me?
My heart raced. It felt like I was suffocating, as if I would drown at any moment.
“I can’t wait much longer.”
Kang Taejun stopped spinning the cylinder and pulled the trigger.
“Five rounds left.”
With each pull of the trigger, the likelihood of a bullet firing increased. Just knowing that the end was inevitable made it feel like I was about to die.
“Why are you doing this?”
I realized for the first time that knowing everything depends solely on luck could drive someone insane. That fact was as horrifying as the helplessness I felt, knowing I could do nothing in this situation.
“Did you tamper with the gun somehow?”
Though I couldn’t see him, I felt his gaze from above, digging into me like a thorn lodged in my throat. Every time I swallowed or exhaled, my nape prickled with discomfort.
The urge to look up and see the man watching me grew harder and harder to resist.
“As if that’s possible.”
Kang Taejun burst out laughing as if he found this amusing. I tried twisting my hand to slip out of his cold, powerful grip, but he didn’t let go.
I forced out my words, my voice cracked and trembling.
“If one of us is going to take a bullet to the head from this gun, it’ll be you.”
“I don’t care.”
Kang Taejun let out another lighthearted laugh and maneuvered my hand, aiming the gun at my chest. My hand shook uncontrollably as it was forced into position.
“Of course, I’d rather watch Yugyeom up there see you die.”
Kang Taejun lifted his head to look upwards. It was painfully obvious where his murky gaze was fixed.
“I’ve waited my whole life for this moment.”
He smiled with a childlike innocence, as if reminiscing about a childhood dream, his face illuminated under the lights.
“For that moment, I’d pull the trigger without hesitation.”
Kang Taejun looked back at me. He was utterly sincere, willing to risk even his own life.
“When you want something, you have to put in just as much.”
And at the moment my fingers, wrapped under his grip, were forced into trigger.
A crack appeared in Kang Taejun’s expression as he looked at me.
“Looks like God’s on my side after all.”
Kang Taejun smiled widely, with the innocent joy of a child who was truly happy.
As soon as I saw that face, I realized with surprising clarity.
This was the end.
If I pulled the trigger this time, it would truly be over.
The gun in my hand felt sharper, more real than ever. I had never felt death looming so close.
“You know what? Actually, Yugyeom can hear everything we’re saying right now.”
His whisper, laced with laughter, fell low.
Still gripping me with one hand, Kang Taejun used his other to pull a phone from his red jacket.
“If you have anything to say, go ahead.”
I swallowed a shaky breath, staring at the call screen that had been connected for several minutes. Seeing the name displayed, my heart pounded as if it would explode.
When Kang Taejun tapped the screen, a voice began to speak from the other end.
Do you like it? My gift to you.
The woman’s low whisper flowed into my ear, as if she were right beside me.
You don’t seem to like it, little brother.
Yuhwa and Yugeom’s conversation came through the phone.
My body refused to move, as if it was broken by the sound of their voices.
_ If you don’t like it, should I give you something else? How about a way to stop this game?
I was terrified of what might say next, knowing couldn’t bear it.
But I couldn’t shake off the Taejun’s grip, couldn’t drop the gun forced into my hand, nor end the call.
The more I struggled, the deeper I sank like I was trapped in swamp.
– kill father.
Only then I was forced to accept it.
-Right here, Infront of everyone, kill the Father.
This was a stage I could only leave by dying.
