Chapter 45
Yugyeom stood still without approaching, but there was a distinct tension in the air around him, as if the atmosphere had thickened like a curtain.
Our eyes met. I immediately turned my head away and regretted it.
What am I supposed to do by avoiding him so blatantly?
I still felt the piercing gaze of those dark eyes.
I had no idea what was going on around me, but I felt an overwhelming urge to run away.
Let’s just calmly leave this place for now.
That was what I was thinking at that moment.
Something swiftly flew past, separating me and Kang Tae-jun. Then, I heard the sound of glass shattering behind me.
With a dumbfounded expression, I looked at Kang Tae-jun’s jacket sleeve, which had been cleanly slashed.
The white shirt underneath the jacket was now stained red.
It was only then that I realized what had just happened.
“Wow. Haha! Ha….”
For a moment, the black pupils I was facing widened.
It was a mixture of exhilaration, excitement, and madness that couldn’t be defined with just one word.
A chilling sensation brushed past my neck.
Kang Tae-jun tilted his head sideways. Finally, I was able to break free from the intense gaze that had held me captive.
“Long time no see, CEO?”
Thud.
Drops of blood trickled down from the slashed jacket sleeve onto the white table.
Turning my gaze away from the expanding bloodstains, I looked up and met Baek Ha-won’s eyes. His expression was so calm and indifferent that it was hard to believe he had just thrown a knife at someone.
“You’ve become even scarier since we last met.”
Kang Tae-jun chuckled with amusement.
His grip on my wrist tightened, and I barely suppressed a whimper that rose to the tip of my tongue.
If I hesitated any longer, my wrist might have been severed.
It was right after I had grabbed the knife from the table with my free hand.
Baek Ha-won stood up from his seat.
Slowly approaching, he took the knife from my hand. His movements flowed like water, leaving my hand empty and numb in their wake.
“Where do you think it’ll be next?”
The tip of the knife precisely touched Kang Tae-jun’s chest.
Though his voice was quiet, his eyes blazed as if he could ignite fire with just a touch.
“Here?”
Twisting his lips into a smile, Baek Ha-won swept the knife’s edge across Kang Tae-jun’s neck.
“Or here?”
Kang Tae-jun’s arm was drenched in blood. The blood trickled down his arm, under my wrist.
A hot, eerie sensation spread from my grasped wrist. The scent of blood made me exhale sharply, as if trying to expel it from my nostrils.
Baek Ha-won tilted his head, then grabbed Kang Tae-jun’s arm.
Veins bulged on the back of his hand. His white fingers were stained with blood in an instant.
Though the wound must have been painful, there was no trace of discomfort on Kang Tae-jun’s face.
His laughter grew louder, and a darker madness than blood itself rose within him.
“No, you know. Don’t you?”
However, for a moment, a crack appeared on Kang Tae-jun’s face.
As always, Baek Ha-won pierced through his opponent with ease, his twisted smile oozing with relaxation.
“….”
I didn’t hear the words that followed. I just guessed by looking at their faces.
At the mocking whisper, Kang Tae-jun’s face instantly froze with coldness.
However, he soon burst into laughter.
The shape of his eyes and mouth, torn long and horizontally, was different from before.
The abnormal but somewhat genuine joy was no longer visible. Instead, an emotion that could only be described as madness or anger took over.
The atmosphere between them grew even thicker.
The throbbing resonance spread from my wrist to my heart, coursing through my entire body. It shook my head like a ringing bell.
I swallowed a long breath. I couldn’t bear it anymore.
I dug my nails into Kang Tae-jun’s hand, which seemed determined to break my wrist.
Blood droplets formed along the path my nails took.
“….”
Kang Tae-jun’s gaze met mine.
I scratched as hard as I could, but I didn’t utter a sound. The surroundings were unnaturally quiet.
I was momentarily taken aback by his unresponsive demeanor, as if he couldn’t feel any pain. But I quickly regained my composure and seized the opportunity when his grip loosened, pulling my hand away from his.
Then, wrapping my numb wrist, I stood up from the chair.
The blouse, soaked with blood, clung to my arms. The sensation was so dreadful that it sent shivers down my spine.
As I looked at the blood-stained tablecloth, I felt like I might vomit at any moment.
But I suppressed all those feelings and laughed nonchalantly.
“Shall we stop now? You seem full.”
Baek Ha-won had a knack for pinpointing people’s vulnerabilities and precisely probing them with ease.
Like a ghost, he could calculate the direction to plunge the dagger into the very momentary weakness that everyone had as humans.
Then, he would extract what he intended, a truly useful skill in the world surrounding him.
And that method struck Kang Tae-jun deeper than anyone else.
I fear the nonsensical things that stimulated Kang Tae-jun will happen again.
More precisely, I fear that Kang Tae-jun might kill Yugyeom again this time.
Watching Baek Ha-won and Kang Tae-jun confront each other, the last scene came to mind, and I couldn’t bear it anymore.
“It seems like closing time is approaching…”
I turned my gaze around to remind myself that this was a restaurant.
Although the tables were divided into sections, making it not so noticeable, there were definitely still people around.
It would be too much even for Baek Ha-won and Kang Tae-jun to brawl in such a public space, especially in the prestigious restaurant of a luxury hotel.
With hopeful eyes, I looked at Baek Ha-won.
“….”
At that moment, something draped over my shoulder.
Startled, I shrunk my shoulder and shook my head. The large navy jacket easily covered the red-stained arm.
“Nice to see you here, Boss.”
The man passed by me and stood in front of Baek Ha-won. He nodded lightly but politely towards Baek Ha-won. It was a belated greeting.
I looked at Yugyeom, who had taken off his jacket and was wearing a white shirt, with frozen eyes.
Just a jacket. Yet its weight pressed down on my shoulders so heavily that I couldn’t move.
“I have an appointment with Director Kang Tae-jun regarding the Russian smuggling case, Boss. What brings you here?”
Baek Ha-won stared at Yugyeom without any movement. Yugyeom added softly without a care.
“If you have time, would you like to join us?”
Kang Tae-jun is known as the third-generation chaebol.
The company built by his grandfather was a trading company, and the relationship between the Baek family and Kang Tae-jun’s family had been quite close since his grandfather’s time.
It’s a well-known fact that TO Group rose to its current position through drug and weapon smuggling disguised as international trade.
Although Yugyeom wouldn’t really meet Kang Tae-jun for such reasons, it was a gesture of courtesy that was barely noticeable.
Baek Ha-won tapped the table with the tip of the knife-holding hand. Slowly but steadily, tap. Tap.
My mouth dried up at the sound. It was strange how it made me nervous.
“I didn’t know you’d be doing things I didn’t ask you to do.”
The black pupils flashed with a hint of amusement as they slid sideways.
Even facing such blatant ridicule, Yugyeom smiled, his eyes crinkling.
“If you don’t ask, I’ll just have to find my own way to receive beauty.”
—
I cupped my face in hands filled with cold water. One, two, three… Until I couldn’t bear it any longer, I lifted my face up.
“Ha.”
I wiped the water off my face and opened my eyes.
Long, black hair reaching down to my waist. And beyond the jet-black irises, I saw another version of myself.
That sight didn’t feel awkward anymore. I had gotten used to the alternate body of Cha Yeon-byeol, but now it felt strangely alien.
I wiped the mirror with my still damp hand.
There were still fingerprints on my white wrist. It felt slightly numb where I had been grabbed.
I didn’t get to scratch the hand that held my wrist with a knife, but considering the blow I dealt to Baek Ha-won, I settled for satisfaction from my nails.
I washed away the dried bloodstains from my wrist to my elbow with water.
It felt uncomfortable and creepy. I wanted to get rid of these clothes as soon as possible.
Just looking at the bloodstains made me nauseous, so I roughly rolled up the sleeves. The navy jacket still hanging over my shoulders caught my eye.
I couldn’t take it off, but I couldn’t put my arms through either.
After reaching out several times, I eventually just clenched my fists and let them fall to the ground.
The blood-stained clothes were unsightly. I simply acknowledged it. It was easier that way.
I stepped out of the bathroom. The corridor in front of the hotel restaurant was quite deserted.
There might be Baekcheon’s organization members lurking in unseen places, but it was a moment when the anxiety that naturally crept up when alone urged my steps.
Ring. My phone rang in my pocket.
I didn’t have anyone to contact. Puzzled, I took out my phone.
[Hello.]
It was an unsaved number. For a moment, I thought of Kang Tae-jun, but I had already blocked that number.
[Don’t we have something to talk about?]
The familiar tone made me think of only one person I knew who spoke like that. But it couldn’t be that person I was thinking of.
Before my thoughts could wander further, my phone rang again.
[That night, I think I came to see you while I was drunk.]
I almost dropped my phone.
