Chapter 44
Even though I vowed not to run away anymore, what should I do when I meet them next?
“……”
At that moment, the sound of a rumbling stomach interrupted my thoughts.
“….Hungry.”
It was amusing that I was hungry in this situation, but upon reflection, I realized I hadn’t eaten anything since this morning. I decided to look for something to eat and got up.
As I stepped into the area untouched by the light coming through the glass, it was pitch dark. Unable to find the switch, I had to grope along the wall.
Where is the exit?
“Uh…!”
As I searched for the switch, the wall I leaned against suddenly gave way, causing me to lose balance and stumble forward.
“Oof…”
As I fell to the ground, my arms scraped against the hard surface.
Brushing off my bruised knees and getting up, that was when it happened.
“What are you doing here?”
A familiar voice murmured softly in the darkness. As I turned my head towards the direction of the voice, a bright light flooded in.
I blinked my eyes several times to adjust to the gradually clearer vision.
Standing tall in front of me was Baek Ha-won.
Baek Ha-won was barely covered in a loosely worn robe, with water dripping from his wet hair as if he had just taken a shower.
“Boss, I mean, why are you here?”
I struggled to close my gaping mouth.
Baek Ha-won, who was looking down at me, swallowed the water in his water bottle. The droplets falling from his hair were vivid enough to catch the light.
Unconsciously, I swallowed dryly.
Baek Ha-won casually crushed the empty bottle and threw it into the trash bin, then reached out to me.
“This is my room.”
His hand felt warm as he lightly lifted me up.
As my gaze rose, I instinctively took a step back, avoiding the clearer view of his chest revealed between the loose robe.
“I thought Ji-woon said this was my room?”
Whether he read my gaze or not, Baek Ha-won chuckled and tightened the robe’s belt.
“It seems like we’re sharing a room, huh?”
“……We are?”
Baek Ha-won brushed his wet hair aside and took a step forward. I followed him up the stairs and down the long corridor.
Of course, calling this place a room would be an understatement; it seemed more like a house, but still, it was an enclosed space.
Entering the room behind him, I saw a spacious and elegantly decorated space. Baek Ha-won opened the wardrobe next to the window.
Watching his silhouette engulfed in darkness, I hesitantly spoke.
“Um… I can’t sleep when I’m in the same house with someone else. Getting a different room…”
At that moment, Baek Ha-won silently removed his robe, dampening it. I was startled and turned away.
Thud.
The sound of the robe hitting the ground echoed in the room.
The tattoo that faintly peeked out from the shoulder, adorned with solid muscles, flashed in my mind. The phoenix emblem seemed vivid as if it would soar under the moonlight.
I absentmindedly chewed on my slightly chapped lips while touching my nails with my fingertips.
The sound of clothes brushing against each other sounded overly sensitive.
“……”
Suppressing the awkward feeling inside, I counted the patterns on the sparkling marble floor.
Suddenly, a shadow approached without a sound.
When I raised my head, Baek Ha-won stood in front of me, now wearing a black silk shirt.
“You should be able to look away.”
His black pupils slowly scanned me.
“You barely look away for a moment, and you’re already thinking about running away with someone else….”
Running away? It was an unfair choice of words, enough to leave a stain on my conscience.
But before I could even refute, his low, deep voice silenced me like a whisper.
“Even in that cramped elevator, we managed fine. So in a hotel room, it wouldn’t be surprising if I brought someone openly.”
I momentarily felt ashamed and almost looked away.
Bringing someone? Well, he already brought someone… But without CCTV, there’s no confirmation of what happened with Angel. Still, the thought of being exposed made my body stiffen.
It was fortunate that Angel was sent away ahead of time, just in case he arrived at the hotel soon.
I fidgeted with my hair unnecessarily, then looked up at Baek Ha-won and chuckled lightly.
“If you say that, wouldn’t it be unfair to me? What can I do if things get tangled up even when I stay still?”
I chose not to argue against his obviously twisted intentions.
“Last time, it was in the middle of the sea, and this time, it dropped from the sky. Is there a way to escape?”
Baek Ha-won tilted his head and smirked.
“Still, try your best.”
He glanced slowly behind me. It seemed more like a show than actually looking around the room.
His gaze returned to me.
“Next time, we might really share the same room.”
He took another step towards me. With his face leaning close, I instinctively leaned back, almost collapsing onto the bed.
Our eyes met for a brief moment. Baek Ha-won tilted his head, and for a short moment, his body leaned towards my shoulder before straightening up. His hand held the jacket and watch that were lying on the bed.
The gaze piercing through me felt chilling to the bone.
But it was as fleeting as a misconception.
Baek Ha-won filled his wrist with the watch, turning away.
“I’ll let you have this room. I’ll use the one on the first floor.”
Watching him walk away, a sudden realization struck me, and I hurriedly chased after him, grabbing the hem of his clothes.
When he turned back, there was a hint of annoyance on his face.
“……I might not tolerate this anymore.”
It seemed he hadn’t followed me because of any dissatisfaction.
I found myself involuntarily shutting my mouth upon seeing his face. But eventually, I broke the silence with a meaningless glance around.
“Aren’t you hungry?”
Baek Ha-won’s eyebrows furrowed.
I plastered the most harmless smile I could manage onto my stiff face as I looked at him.
“Could you buy me some food, oppa?”
* * *
If someone called me a mere human who succumbed to instinct, I wouldn’t have a response.
“You’re hungry, aren’t you?”
The steak plate was pushed towards me.
I stared at the juicy steak with astonished eyes before timidly asking, “Is it poisoned?”
A smirk formed on his crooked lips.
“I wouldn’t resort to such petty methods to kill you.”
I almost dropped the knife. I tightened my grip on it even more, thinking,
This is a hundred percent a bluff.
I must be crazy to agree to have a meal with him.
I didn’t have the confidence to go outside, and I was so hungry that I felt dizzy. Plus, I didn’t want to risk anything happening if Baek Ha-won was left alone.
In a moment of clouded judgment, I grabbed onto Baek Ha-won.
I hadn’t even considered the possibility of choking while eating.
The table was filled with various dishes, from salad to steak and pasta, leaving no gaps.
I picked at the food with my fork and put it in my mouth. Chewing slowly, I realized the food wasn’t diminishing. It was an expected outcome.
Swallowing the water in the wine glass, I turned my gaze to the view outside the window.
It was a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, similar to what I had seen from the suite. However, what caught my eye was the pitch-black sea under the azure sky.
The dark sea shimmering where the building lights couldn’t reach seemed to reflect my oppressive feelings.
“Hello, are you enjoying your time?”
At that moment, a waiter holding a bottle of wine approached with a bright smile.
“We’re currently running an event for the last couple of guests to enter. Would you like us to take a photo for you?”
“We’re not…!”
I panicked and forcefully shook my head.
“Oh, I’m sorry. My mistake. You two must be siblings. You look so alike.”
It was another instance of a potential disaster. I tried to deny it, but my words were stuck in my throat.
Baek Ha-won’s face, which had been expressionless all along, suddenly twisted with visible discomfort. A chilly unease washed over me.
Baek Ha-won moved his lips, now devoid of any coolness.
“That’s not it.”
With half of his face shrouded in shadow, his black pupils were fixed on me.
“Oh, then…”
“In that case, what are we?”
At that moment, another voice cut through the waiter’s words.
When I turned my head towards the approaching footsteps, my heart sank.
“Did you really not eat with me because you have a lover?”
The knife, which had been slicing through the steak, made a chilling sound as it slipped.
A low, spine-chilling laughter sent shivers down my spine.
“After waiting for so long.”
It had been four hours since 6 o’clock, and Kang Tae-jun was standing right in front of me.
The stains on his white shirt, which I hadn’t noticed before, caught my attention.
Kang Tae-jun messed up his neatly arranged wine-colored hair and leaned back, laughing loudly.
He was laughing so sincerely that his broad shoulders were shaking.
“Oh…”
Kang Tae-jun wiped the corners of his mouth and looked at me with penetrating eyes.
“Since you have a lover now, can you have a meal with me?”
With a playful narrowing of his eyes, Kang Tae-jun grabbed my wrist holding the fork, impaled the steak, and shoved it into my mouth.
I tried to pull my wrist away, but his grip was too strong.
“Don’t worry about making me uncomfortable.”
Why would I worry about you? As I contemplated whether to fiercely scratch his hand with the knife, the sound of another pair of footsteps behind Kang Tae-jun filled my ears. At the same time, an inexplicable sense of foreboding engulfed me.
Seeing my stiffening face, Kang Tae-jun swallowed his laughter and smirked.
“I have company too.”
Why does my ominous intuition always turn out to be right?
In the worst possible combination, Yugyeom appeared in front of me, signaling complete disaster.
