The Maid Lives Well Alone

TMLWA Prologue

Prologue

Already the second time,
The empty belly had carved through to the heart. There was no longer the strength to feel pain or sadness.

Only the candles left behind by the maidservants flickered in the air, comforting the vanished souls.

“Sigh…”

Tears were a luxury. She could intuitively sense that death was imminent. Is what you see before dying an illusion?

Anne lay looking at the gray ceiling, softly murmuring,

“When I rise from this place…”

The dark, imposing figure carried a familiar and missed scent. He was right.

“I’ll definitely divorce you.”

Was it an illusion that the man’s shoulder seemed to twitch?

Anne couldn’t be sure, but she soon thought, what if he’s really leaving.
The candlelight flickered weakly before her eyes. The light, momentarily dispelling the darkness, was faint and feeble.

In the dim light, the man’s shadow stretched long, as if covering the fireplace. Even if tears flowed down the woman’s cheeks, the man standing in the distance remained still.

Anne didn’t even have the strength to reach out to him. It was truly the end now.
I can’t get up. I should have divorced him long ago.

No, I shouldn’t have married him in the first place.
Regret came too late in the face of death.

“Because I won’t be the shackles around your ankles. So…”

Before Anne could finish her sentence, she closed her eyes.

Only the half-melted candle, ticking away, illuminated the damp and clammy face above her.
