In the silent late night, most of the commoners of Yas City who had worked hard all day had fallen into a sweet sleep.
However, on such a night, Sylvia, a ten-year-old girl, was sitting on the edge of her bed with her hands folded over her knees. She kept her eyes wide open, staring vigilantly in the direction of the door.
The problem was not that she didn’t want to sleep but it was that she couldn’t sleep.
It was bittersweet to say the least but at this time, the current Sylvia was not the original Sylvia. This ten-year-old girl had a twenty-year-old soul from the Flower Country in her body.
She was originally a senior student majoring in writing and directing, and was filming a night scene with a small crew on the mountain. Unexpectedly, as she went down the mountain, she lost her footing because of the dark and windy night and became unconscious. When she woke up again, she was in this ten year old’s body.
As for the original little girl, Sylvia touched the gauze wrapped around her head and sighed silently.
Suddenly, Sylvia’s ears moved slightly. She frowned and got out of bed. She came to the door with a light but swift movement with one ear pressed tightly against the wooden door, listening to the movement outside.
During the day, she had sealed the windows with nails and wooden planks. She also put some sharp iron objects on the walls and the ground in the yard. She moved some heavy objects like the cabinets to the door. Luckily, her father was a blacksmith, and there were quite a few of these things at home.
But this body was only ten years old. After doing this, she was very exhausted. Yet she still couldn’t sleep this night.
Fortunately, she soon heard a few low-pitched curses, and judged that there should be only one person present. The surroundings immediately fell into silence, as if the person had left.
However Sylvia didn’t dare to relax her vigilance. She held a kitchen knife tightly in her right hand and moved back to the bed little by little until her legs and feet couldn’t hold on any longer.
After this set of actions, her originally wide eyes couldn’t help but close a little, but she still couldn’t allow herself to fall asleep. She had to hold on until the first bell rang. This bell signified that most hard-working civilians would get up and start work which meant that she was now relatively safe.
Clang!
It felt like a long time had passed yet it also felt like time had passed in a blink of an eye. The loud ringing of the bell finally reached Sylvia’s ears. She couldn’t hold on anymore, and didn’t bother about changing out of her clothes or washing up. She fell down onto the bed and fell asleep almost instantly.
When she woke up again, the bright sunlight was already shining on the ground through the cracks in the window.
Thanks to the great God of Transmigration, she had survived to see a new day again.
Sylvia rubbed her eyes, touched her shriveled stomach, and struggled to get up with a dejected face. The first thing she had to do was to remove the things that were blocking the door.
After working for a while, she became even hungrier, but there was nothing she could do. Right now she was the only one at home, and had to do everything by herself.
Sylvia opened the door, and the bright sun shone on her body. It made her feel very warm and comfortable, driving away some of her fatigue at once.
She stretched and let out a big lazy yawn, putting her right hand into a pocket at her waist. There were three copper coins in it, which could buy three rolls of bread. It was just enough to eat for two days.
Thinking about the silver coin and four copper coins in the small iron box that she had hidden and how it would last for two months at most, Sylvia felt sad for her poor self.
She was very lucky to be able to live again in a healthy and good-looking body which was ten years younger than her original self. No matter how she looked at it, she had got a great deal.
However, the little girl’s life experience was really miserable.
This was a world of theocracy and magic. In addition to humans, there are elves, dwarves, and even the mighty dragons and gods were all real.
Of course, these had nothing to do with Sylvia for the time being. She was just a little girl who lived in Yas City and had never been out of the city since she was born.
Although her mother died of dystocia and post-partum hemorrhage after she gave birth to her, her father was a blacksmith. It was hardly a big problem to raise a little girl.
Unfortunately, there were unforeseen circumstances.
Her father, who was physically strong, fell ill. Even though she spent almost all his savings and hired a junior priest, she still could not save his life.
The two adults had no relatives, so Sylvia became an orphan. She was just a good-looking and helpless orphan.
Even if the neighbors around were kind, everyone was barely able to feed themselves and could not afford to adopt another child. The little girl could only live at home by herself and went out every day to buy food to support her life.
Even so, she was still being targeted by some guys.
In this world, the two most powerful gods were the God of Light and the God of Darkness. The two Gods had opposing ideologies, and evenly matched believers.
Yas City, where Sylvia was located, happened to be the location of one of the three main churches of the Temple of Light. Everyone in the city believed in the God of Light, but this did not mean that it was a peaceful city.
Darkness was everywhere, especially in the west of Yas City, where the commoners and the poor lived. Usually nobles and adults of the high rank would not step in there. If the commoners could barely get enough food and clothing, then the poor who lived further west were really pitiful. Under such conditions, it was not surprising that some people would take risks.
After all, Sylvia was a beautiful child with blond hair and blue eyes. One must know that blond hair and blue eyes was the favorite look of the God of Light. Some underground forces would charge high prices for such children.
She had rarely left the house since she was born, and she wore a hat whenever she went out. However, some things were not so easy to hide.
Sylvia even suspected that her father’s death might not be that simple just like the wound on her head which was caused by this appearance.
An unknown man had climbed over the wall in the middle of the night to kidnap the child. He didn’t know how the child was alert and found out about his plans. In a panic, the child bumped into a nearby pillar. She had no breath, and the man fled in haste, leaving the child lying in a pool of blood.
It was Sylvia who woke up in this body afterwards, made a noise that woke up the neighbors and survived by chance.
But the problems she faced after surviving came one after another.
The first one was the question of survival.
This was a really big problem, as she had no money, and there was nothing valuable at home. The house she lived in was not like in her previous world which could be sold for a sum of money.
The key point was that she was only ten years old now, and even if there were people hiring workers around, they would not want such a small child. The only option was to go to a noble’s house to be a maid.
She was a commoner, had her own identity certificate, and was young and innocent. She also fit the aesthetics of most Yas city residents. If she wanted to become a maid, at least there would be no problem in surviving.
But once she became a maid, she would practically lose her freedom. An important point to note was that Sylvia had a very good appearance. Even though her head was bandaged and her eyes were light blue, it still didn’t affect her beauty.
She had bright golden long curly hair, big blue eyes, fair and tender skin, and delicate nose and lips. No matter how one looked at it, she looked like a real-life SD doll, which made people want to hold her in their arms and play with.
With this kind of appearance, if she became a maid, Sylvia could only imagine what the consequences would be.
However, her current days of worrying every night were not much better. If those people were to kidnap her directly, Sylvia didn’t think that anyone would try to stop them.
All in all, no matter how she looked at it, her future looked bleak.
“Sylvia? Oh my God, your face looks too bad!” The loud voice pulled Sylvia back from her thoughts. She reflexively showed a “shy” smile, and then got a few more distressed words.
This was Aunt Anna, who ran a bakery with her husband, and was Sylvia’s neighbor. It was they who found Sylvia injured and asked a doctor to treat her, otherwise she might have become the fastest transmigrator in history to die.
“Aunt Anna, I’m here to buy bread.” Sylvia felt that her stomach was about to be unable to hold on. She whispered this sentence, and handed out three copper coins.
Ana looked at the pale-faced Sylvia, and her fat hand gently touched the brim of her hat, “Sylvia…you…”
She also felt sorry for this little girl, but there were three boys and a daughter in her family. She really couldn’t afford to raise another one, and with Sylvia’s appearance, she was really afraid.
Anna winked at her husband, who immediately understood, turned around and went into the house to get something.
Anna took a small biscuit from the basket next to her and gave it to Sylvia, “Sylvia, what are your plans for the future? I heard that Earl Hunter’s house is recruiting maids. Would you like to try it?”
In the eyes of most commoners, it was an honor to go to a noble house to work. They would be able to eat and drink well and get in touch with the upper class.
However for Sylvia, this was definitely not a good place, but she didn’t express her thoughts. She just smiled shyly, “Aunt Anna, I will consider it, but it is not convenient for me as I am injured now.”
“The God of Light is above.” Anna sighed again, but before she could say anything, her husband came out with a paper bag.
Sylvia thanked her as she took the paper bag, but after a rough glance, she knew that there were definitely more than three loaves in it. She looked at Aunt Anna gratefully, only to see her winking mischievously at her.
Although she couldn’t adopt Sylvia, she was still willing to help in some aspects, and in any case, she had watched the child grow up.
“The Temple of Light is choosing a saint, Sylvia. You can check it out.”
Sylvia couldn’t help looking at Uncle Allen, who had never spoken much, in surprise. She didn’t expect him to bring such good news to her.
If she was in a game now, Uncle Allen would have been the legendary Hidden NPC in Novice Village!
“Anna, two brown breads.”
A few guests happened to arrive at this time, and Anna didn’t have time to ask anything else. She had to greet the guests first, and Allen followed along, but before leaving, he said to Sylvia, “I don’t know about much about it but you can go to the temple first to find out more.”
Sylvia nodded quickly. This was already a pleasant surprise. She didn’t disturb the two of them further, and walked quickly home after saying goodbye.
The Holy Maiden of Light was the spokesperson of the God of Light in the world. The status of the Holy Maiden of Light was even higher than that of the Pope. Sylvia didn’t have any expectations of being a saint, however it would be a good thing to find a job in the Holy See.
Of course, the premise was that she had the power of light, which was even rarer than the elemental talent of ordinary magicians. Sylvia had done a test when she was six years old, and she did not have the talent to become a magician.
In any case, she would go and have a look later. Having hope was better than nothing.
Not long after Sylvia left, Anna was finally free. She looked at her husband strangely, “How did you know this news?”
The Holy Maiden of Light had a high status among all believers who believed in the God of Light, and the selection of the Holy Maiden was also a major event. However, the selection of the Holy Maiden was very strict. In the eyes of the believers, only the best women are qualified to be the saint.
Therefore, no commoner ever wanted to go to participate in the selection of the Holy Maiden, and they would not even know the news.
Allen was stunned for a moment, then shook his head in confusion, “I forgot, I probably heard someone mention it.” He was also surprised. How did he know the news just now? Who mentioned it to him?
Anna didn’t worry too much about this matter, and continued to greet the customers who came one after another.
No one noticed that when Allen bent down, a figure with an indistinct face appeared behind him.
“Finally, another soul from another world has arrived. This time, what kind of script should I arrange?”
Likewise, the intriguing words dissipated in the air without anyone noticing.
