The Duke and Duchess' Divorce Circumstances

CHAPTER 001: Prologue

Her soft, flowing black hair wrapped around her back, and her sea-blue eyes sparkled like stars. Her lips, as if she had bitten into a red rose petal, moved gracefully on her skin as clear as a jewel.

“Isn’t that what Weber wanted too?”

Ray Alexis, a black-haired beauty. Nicknames: Alex or Ray.

Weber couldn’t erase his dumbfounded expression as Ray Alexis spoke with a soft smile. His fiancee, who was just nodding her head and saying yes, yes, was talking about breaking off the engagement in a casual tone.

“Are you serious?”

After gathering his expression for a while, Weber asked sarcastically. Ray Alexis nodded her head once. Weber looked even more displeased at that insincere answer.

“Answer me one more time. I asked you if you were serious, Alex.”

Ray Alexis always followed his instructions like a gentle puppy. Weber also knew that well. Therefore, it was obvious that the story about the break-up of the engagement was probably nothing more than a love operation clumsily picked up from somewhere, like a jealousy-inducing strategy to seduce him.

“If you’re kidding, you’ll regret it. I will return right away and announce the break-up of our engagement to my family.”

“Yes. Please. Is that so?”

It was a voice full of annoyance that he had never heard before.

‘What is this irreverent tone of voice?’

Before Weber could say anything, Ray Alexis’ cold voice followed.

“I think Weber thinks I’m kidding.”

“Ha, Alex. What should we do now…”

Ray Alexis cut off his words and spoke. This too was something that had never happened before.

“It’s not a joke, so go home quickly and tell me that our engagement is broken. You were talking about it with your own mouth. Marrying a poor woman like me is a shame for a nobleman who sells his reputation for money.”

In fact, this was something Weber said publicly. However, those words have not been uttered even once since immediately after the engagement with Ray Alexis was decided. Because he was doing the same thing he was criticizing. Of course, the engagement did not go according to his will.

“How will I face my brother who has received a title?”

To overcome their increasingly difficult circumstances, Count Wright and his wife betrothed their second son, who had not received a title, to a wealthy family. The intention was to continue the family line as the eldest son who received a title, and to build up the property by bringing in money as the second son. The second son, Weber Wright, was brought to Leanello and became engaged. It was like being sold for money. As soon as the engagement was decided, Leanello immediately settled the Wright family’s debt. What was surprising was that that amount was nothing to them. He was so ashamed of this that he even became annoyed with his fiancée, who was known to be a beauty. Not only that, he tried to restore his fractured self-esteem by spewing out harsh words and rumors about her kind and docile fiancée, who had nothing to say and shut her up.

“…Are you saying you went crazy after dying and came back to life, Alex?”

Even if the engagement was to be broken off, as a noble, he had to speak up first. He shouldn’t have dared to say this in a low-income family with no roots.

“Even if I were crazy, would I be as crazy as you?”

Weber was greatly shocked by her cold and blunt tone. The woman in front of him was not the Ray Alexis he knew. The original Alex would not have been able to answer him like this. No, rather than saying anything, she just had to tremble and hide her surprised face. Weber, who was shocked, was momentarily speechless in embarrassment.

Ray Alexis continued.

“The Wright family is talking about buying a top of some kind. Do they have the money for that? Aren’t you trusting me and installing it? If you break off the engagement, you’re the one who will regret it, not me.”

“Ji, what did you say just now? That one? Are you going to do it?”

Weber was extremely embarrassed by the harsh words coming out of the elegant and beautiful lady’s mouth.

“Why? You swear and say mean things all the time, but you can’t even hear a single informal word from me?”

Weber’s eyes were shaking with shock. Ray Alexis seemed to have become a different person, even the look in her eyes was different from before. There was a strangeness in her eyes, and she did not avoid eye contact like before. She proudly held her head up and straightened her back, which was clearly different from before.

‘Has she really become someone else?’

Meanwhile, Ray looked at Weber’s shocked face and thought to herself, smiling brightly.

‘If there is a rumor in the capital that Ray Alexis is crazy, the marriage road will be blocked even more, so that’s not a bad idea.’

And she opened her mouth with a deadpan expression.

“If you feel uncomfortable because I dumped you, tell the family that you broke off the engagement because you thought I was crazy.”

* * *

One day, Ray, suddenly suffering from a high fever, opened her window to let in some cold air, but lost her footing and fell three floors.

“Omg!”

She thought she would be seriously injured or die, but unexpectedly she opened her eyes in another dimension. A place full of clothes and strange objects she had never seen before, and where the night was as bright as day. People called that place ‘Republic of Korea.’ Ray lived in Korea for 10 years, where she went without even knowing the local language.

Her time in that other dimension changed everything about her. Not only her taste, personality, and tone of voice, but also the values that encompass her entire life. There, Ray realized that her own personality up until now was in fact tailored to her own.

Although she was not a noblewoman, she was born as the eldest daughter of a wealthy family, and married the fiancé chosen by her parents and started a family, a life she followed obediently, believing that this was her life. Because she was the daughter of a decent family in Leetham, she lived a life that everyone took for granted. Ray grew up thinking that she had a gentle and quiet personality. She never went against her parents’ words, and she never decided anything of her own will. ‘She is living life’ she had never felt before.

But Korea was different. She lived her life the way she chose for herself. It was amazing to see her finding her own way, with her eyes sparkling. Ray was deeply fascinated by this free country. And there she saw her true self. She had fun wandering around her street looking for delicious food with her friend, and chatting away trivial stories for hours was fun. This was her true personality that she learned while living freely with a friend who was like her real sister. In order to survive in a country where everything was different from Ravidom, Ray changed a lot of things. Even though she missed it, she couldn’t figure out how to return to Ravidom, so she blanked herself out and filled herself with a new one in order to live here.

Whenever she thought of her family, she felt sad and cried. Although it wasn’t a close and loving family relationship like in Korea, they were still blood relatives. When she thought of her parents and younger sister, she felt sick to her stomach. At that time, her friend Yuju, who lived with her, became her family, and she gradually adapted to her unfamiliar country.

One day, ten years later, Ray went out to close the veranda door and lost her mind.

“Omg!”

She then returned to her original reality, Ravidun, the capital of Lytham. Just like the day she fell to Korea.

She woke up in Ray Alexis’ bedroom at the Leanello Mansion, right on her bed. Ray couldn’t come to her senses for a moment because of the familiar yet unfamiliar scenery she hadn’t seen in such a long time. She missed her family so much that she wondered if she was dreaming without realizing it.

‘Is this a dream or reality?’

Ray walked to her closet and opened the door. The clothes she was still wearing were still neatly hung there. She still couldn’t tell if this was a dream or not.

“What? What…”

She had definitely lived there for 10 years. But what was reflected in the mirror was the face from when she was lying on this bed. Instead of the permed hair with thick waves, she had long straight hair that reached her waist and a slightly younger face than she was used to seeing.

“Is this really a dream?”

However, not only her face but also the room were too much the same to just dismiss it as a dream. As if no time had passed. Her motherland, where she was born and grew up for over 20 years, and the past that she had tried so hard to forget in order to survive in another dimension, came into her mind vividly. The memory became vivid in an instant, as if she had just woken up yesterday and today. So she couldn’t tell even more. It seemed too real to be a dream, and time was the same to be reality, so it felt more like a dream. Ray was confused and she thought that first she needed to check if this was real or not.

After thinking about it for a while, Ray decided to recreate the same situation that day when he moved to another dimension.

‘I was definitely wearing pajamas at the time.’

She had a high fever and couldn’t get out of bed for several days. Ray took off the clothes she was wearing, folded them well, and changed into the pajamas that were in the closet. She walked up to the window again that day, wearing clothes similar to what she was wearing when she fell out the window.

Thump thump thump.

Her heart was pounding so hard that it felt like it was going to jump out of her throat.

‘What if I just fall because it’s reality?’

It’s literally a dog’s death. But…

‘If I were to live here, I would marry a man like Weber and die quickly with no money.’

She decided to take a gamble. The stakes were a fatal wound, or her life. If you’re lucky, it may just be a bruise. Although she was scared, she was already immersed in a free life and lived for a long time. Her emotions and memories could never go back to how they were before. With the future once again becoming uncertain, Ray made a bold decision.

‘I’m sure I won’t die.’

Because it’s a dream. However, even if it were said to be reality, there was still a part of her that believed it. What was left in the Leanello family was money.

‘Even if you get seriously injured, you have the ability to heal with healing magic.’

The moment Ray decided to do so, she tried to throw herself out of the window.

“Miss!”

The maid in charge came running, her pale face screaming. Ray, who was caught by her maid’s hand and barely escaped her fall, clung to her window sill and thought.

‘Ah, it’s reality.’
