Chapter 29 Gift
Silver hair and green eyes.
And a burn mark that runs down her right cheek, across her chin and up her neck, with a tattoo of a geometric symbol above it.
The shape hasn’t changed, but the color and the scars have given her a completely different face.
It’s awkward, even for her.
It would take quite a bit of time to get used to her new face.
She gently touched the burn mark on her chin. The roughness was quite real.
“Ah, so… did it!”
She suddenly realized why, when she had first met the Lamperts earlier, their somewhat surprised gaze had first gone to her right jaw.
She would be getting a lot of similar stares in the future.
Facial scars and tattoos are bound to attract attention.
Of course, Veronia knew that while scars can draw attention, they also provide a good shield.
A shield that would cover her face and keep the wrong men from getting involved.
“Anyway, the magic in this world is amazing.”
She muttered to herself and stepped into the tub, the warm water soothing her tired body.
“Haa… good…!”
She was quite fond of her new home, including the water.
She had a good feeling about it.
The corners of her mouth curled up into a smile.
But it was only for a moment. A tingling in the pit of her stomach at the sudden realization.
“Killion…”
His voice echoed with the name of the man she missed.
What would Killion’s face look like when he found her charred body? She hopes he’s not too sad, Veronia thought.
‘You need to get over things like me quickly, and you need to be happy.’
Your destiny, with the heroine…
It was then.
Huhuhu, suddenly, like a broken tap, tears burst from Veronia’s eyes.
‘What’s wrong? Why the tears?!’
She was puzzled.
I’m not sad, I’m elated, I’m finally free from the fear of death?
I have such a good feeling about the future…?
‘But why do I keep getting teary-eyed, why?’
Because she suddenly misses Killion? Because she sad that her not his destined mate?
Huhuhu… And so Veronia sobbed inexplicably for a long time.
When she got out of the bath, she was greeted by food on the table.
Luisa must have left it there.
Veronia sat down at the table, wiping her wet hair with a towel.
She was already very hungry.
“Yuck!”
As soon as she smelled it, she felt nauseous. Strangely, her appetite was gone in an instant.
She immediately got up and ran to her bedroom.
‘What’s wrong with me all of a sudden? Maybe I’m too tired, or maybe I’m too nervous and my body is rejecting food.’
She didn’t know exactly why, but it seemed impossible to eat right now.
Suddenly, a wave of exhaustion washed over her.
Veronia crawled into bed. She lay down, not even bothering to dry her hair.
She drifted off to sleep, almost as if she had passed out.
Soon, the sound of her breathing, quick and even, echoed quietly.
***
‘Where am I? Am I dreaming…?’
Veronia was walking through the woods.
Her steps were light. The fatigue that had weighed her down a moment ago had completely disappeared.
She had been humming a tune for some time when a large tree appeared in front of her.
‘Wow… it’s so big!’
She tilted her head back and looked up, but I
she couldn’t see the top of it.
‘What is that? It’s amazing!’
There was something hanging from the tree, but it wasn’t fruit, it was a ball of light.
A sweet scent drifted on the breeze and reached Veronia’s nose.
Her mouth watered, and she was tempted to pluck one.
“Uh… eh?! That’s…!”
Just as she thought that, a ball of light from the tree flew gently down the wind.
Veronia stared at it, wide-eyed and fascinated.
Before she knew it, the ball of light was in her hand. It felt warm and fuzzy against her palm.
She had no desire to eat it.
It was a beautiful ball of light, almost too beautiful to look at.
It was then. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves and making them swoosh.
But that wasn’t all. A woman’s voice mingled with the sound of the leaves.
It was the softest voice I’d ever heard.
“A life out of this world. It must be hard.”
Veronia looked around, searching for the voice’s owner, but there was no one in sight.
The voice continued.
“I think you will need this gift, my little favor. I hope you find it useful, child.”
The voice ended there.
As the voice faded, so did the wind, the trees, the forest path, and everything else.
Only the mass of light in his hand remained.
She could feel its warmth vividly.
‘It was a dream, after all.’
Veronia opened her eyes in bed.
She felt refreshed. She could still feel the softness of his hand on her palm.
‘An unearthly creature? You mean me?’
Veronia pondered, remembering the voice she had heard in her dream.
‘A gift? What gift? This home?’
She couldn’t make out any of it, but she knew it was a pleasant dream.
With a long yawn, Veronia closed her eyes again.
And immediately, a suma was upon her.
***
Veronia was able to get out of bed at noon the next day.
“I didn’t wake you up on purpose because I thought you must have been very tired. Did you sleep well?”
“Yes. Thanks.”
The three of them, who had just become a family, sat around the table for lunch.
Veronia was very hungry, having barely eaten yesterday. But her stomach kept rumbling, and she could only manage to nibble on some fruit.
“Doesn’t the food fit in your mouth?”
“I’m tired and my stomach doesn’t feel comfortable.”
“Oh, I see, what can I do about it…”
“I have some herbs that are good for digestion, I can make you a decoction, just tell me.”
Luisa and Hugo’s worried gazes turned to Veronia.
“I’m not sick with anything in particular, it’s just exhaustion, I’ll be fine after a day or two of rest.”
Veronia smiled and chewed her apple a little more vigorously.
She didn’t want to worry them.
Her contract with the Lamperts was for two years, which meant she would be living here as their granddaughter for the next two years.
They had agreed with Onyx that this would be enough time for her to adjust to her new way of life.
“We’re herbalists now, but we used to run an apothecary.”
Hugo opened his mouth slowly.
He felt it was important to give his granddaughter information that would be important to her in her short time with him.
“But ten years ago, our daughter came to us with a group of raggedy men. They said they were in debt. The business didn’t work out, and we had to sell the apothecary to pay them off.”
“…”
“I still haven’t paid it all back, so I’ve spent the last ten years traveling to many dangerous places to gather expensive herbs.”
Hugo’s face sank heavily as he spoke of his difficult past.
Luisa sits quietly next to him, her eyes filled with tears.
“Then, to add insult to injury, our daughter suddenly disappeared two years ago, and we were left with all the debts.”
Hugo paused and ran his hands down his face.
“It’s been a terrible, terrible day, hiring detectives to find her, and having to keep paying the debt.”
Eventually, Hugo began to cry. When he couldn’t speak, Luisa took over.
“But then we were given a chance to start over – Onyx, Nia, and you.”
Onyx said they’d spent enough money, but apparently he’d canceled their debts for them.
“So we’re very grateful to you, Onyx and Nia, and we hope you’ll consider this your real home, and we wish you the best of luck in the future, my dear.”
A faint smile formed over the sadness.
Louisa’s wrinkled face radiated pure goodness.
Her sincerity was palpable.
Veronia, who had been listening to them in silence the entire time, finally spoke up.
“I’m your granddaughter, so feel free to speak to me. I’ll call you grandmother and grandfather, too, because even when we’re alone, we have to practise non-stop so we don’t make mistakes in front of others.”
Luisa and Hugo’s eyes widened at her harmless smile.
Soon, similar smiles appeared on their faces.
“Well, yes… we should.”
“…Yes, if there’s no mistake.”
Luisa and Hugo spoke in an awkward duet.
It looked like they were going to need a lot of time to get used to each other.
In the afternoon, she decided to take Luisa to the market.
She needed to get a feel for the neighborhood and learn the faces of her neighbors.
She walked out the front door, half excited, half nervous.
Veronia head snapped round and she stood, holding on to the post, as a startled Luisa rushed to her aid.
“Nia, are you okay, are you hurt?”
“It’s just that… I’m a little dizzy… standing…”
Veronia didn’t finish what she was about to say, but instead collapsed into Louisa’s arms.
“Nia! Nia! Oh, my God, what’s happening, wake up, Nia! Nia!”
Louisa’s voice echoed in her ears, calling for her desperately, but Veronia couldn’t answer.
She was too weak to move her lips.
Gradually, Louisa’s voice faded away, and Veronia’s consciousness faded.
O bebê é o presente?
Thanks for the update 🇧🇷 😸 🥰
