The evening wind was delightful, and although Wen Ke’an did not live on campus, she had to return home at the appointed hour after school. Her parents were concerned about her staying out too late.
Gu Ting realized she couldn’t stay outside for long, so he offered to bring her home.
“Why did you agree to her when she’s up to no good?” Gu Ting inquired as they walked.
For a brief period, Wen Ke’an was taken aback, but she quickly realized that Gu Ting was referring to the event with Wen Xing’er. Wen Ke’an sensed Wen Xing’er’s hidden objectives, but she had her reasons for agreeing to assist.
“My health is fine now,” Wen Ke’an replied softly. She looked up at him.
Wen Ke’an’s eyes curved as she smiled, and her hair seemed to be bathed in a gentle glow under the evening sun. “I want to dance a performance for you.”
In a past life, she had damaged her foot and was unable to perform a flawless dance for him. This had always been a source of sadness for her. But now that her body was in good shape, she could dance again, and she wanted to dance for her beloved.
Gu Ting lowered his gaze to her, a small smile on his lips. “Sure, I’ll wait for you.”
Wen Ke’an had finished her classes as the evening approached. She saw Wen Xing’er waiting at the school gate as expected after school.
When Wen Ke’an came out of school, Wen Xing’er greeted her cheerfully. “Sister, over here!”
“Who is that?” Jin Ming, who was intrigued by the well-dressed Wen Xing’er, accompanied Wen Ke’an. She scowled slightly and reflexively grasped Wen Ke’an’s wrist, attempting to keep her from falling.
“She’s my cousin,” Wen Ke’an said quietly.
“Your cousin?” Jin Ming let go of Wen Ke’an’s wrist, still finding it strange. “Why does she look so much like a young girl?”
Wen Xinger reached them as soon as Jin Ming had finished complaining. “Are you finished with school, Sister?” Can you accompany me now? We need to get some things ready ahead of time.”
Wen Ke’an had previously notified her parents that she would be assisting Wen Xinger tonight, so she would be arriving home later than usual. Wen Ke’an nodded as she heard Wen Xinger’s comments. “Sure.”
“Where are you going at night?” Jin Ming inquired, still anxious, in a quiet tone.
“I’m going to the neighboring school.”
“Why are you going to the vocational school?”
“She has an event that she needs my help with,” Wen Ke’an explained gently.
Jin Ming gazed at Wen Xing’er, evidently unimpressed with her. She couldn’t shake the notion that Wen Xing’er wasn’t being completely honest.
“I live nearby, so if anything happens, remember to call me,” Jin Ming suggested.
“Okay, I got it,” Wen Ke’an said, smiling.
Jin Ming remained alert but said nothing else. Wen Xing’er couldn’t help but remark as she went, “Would I really harm my sister?” “Who does she believe I am?”
Wen Ke’an remained silent and handed Wen Xinger a makeup bag. “I’ll be right back. Take your time preparing.”
Wen Xinger opened the practice room door to see some of her friends approaching. “How’s it going?” her buddies inquired as they passed by the practice room.
“No worries.” Wen Xing’er answered casually, “I’ve chosen the costume, and she’s getting ready for makeup.”
“Isn’t she in high school? Can she wear makeup?” one of her pals inquired.
“I haven’t seen her do makeup before,” Wen Xing’er sniffed, “so I don’t think she’s that good at it.”
“Haha, don’t make yourself look like an ugly duckling,” another friend teased.
While Wen Xing’er was chatting with her friends, one of her classmates came over. “Xing’er, Tong-Ge is looking for you.”
Wen Xing’er had been in a pleasant mood before hearing this, but her demeanor altered suddenly. “Watch over things here for me,” she murmured to her pal with red hair as she turned to face the practice room behind her. “I’ll be right back.”
The show was ready to begin, and many students were making their way to their seats in the audience section.
Gu Ting was already sitting in his seat when Xie Hongyi arrived with refreshments. Gu Ting had a nice seat in the middle of the third row, with a good view of the stage.
Surprised, Xie Hongyi sat down next to Gu Ting. “Aren’t these performances usually uninteresting to you?” Why did you come so early this time?
“I had some free time, so I came over,” Gu Ting replied. He had his phone in his hand and glanced at the messages.
Xie Hongyi didn’t pay attention and began opening his goodies. He looked forward and realized he had forgotten something. “You haven’t been to school in a few days, and those troublemakers from the Mechanical and Electrical departments are causing problems again,” he said to Gu Ting. “I heard they’re after Little Fatty again. They’ve previously harassed her, and she almost went to fight them.”
“The Mechanical and Electrical guys?” Gu Ting abruptly inquired.
“Yeah,” Xie Hongyi replied, annoyed. “When I arrived, someone told me that they saw that group of people sneaking around in the back. I’m not sure what they’re up to. I’m in charge of security here today, so I’m hoping those men don’t cause any trouble.”

Wen Xing’er’s expression changed when she returned to the practice room door. On her cheeks, faint red handprints could still be seen. When her pals at the door saw her face, they fell silent. No one spoke first, and everyone exchanged eyes.
Outside the practice room, there was a little mirror, and Wen Xing’er’s eyes still had traces of tears. She was fighting back tears. The handprint on her face wasn’t too noticeable, and a basic concealer should suffice. Wen Xing’er turned to face one of her pals who was standing near her. “Can you lend me your foundation for a moment?”
After finishing getting herself ready, Wen Xing’er adjusted her emotions. She looked towards the direction of the practice area and asked, “The evening party is about to start. How is she preparing?”
“Jasmine went straight to the practice room. Do you want to come in and look?” one of her companions said.
They were talking when they noticed the practice room door open, and the first person to come out was Jasmine, who had just entered. When one of the buddies standing beside Wen Xing’er noticed Jasmine’s look, he chuckled, “What’s with Jasmine’s expression? Is it possible that the makeup artist made her look unattractive?”
“It would be great if she looked ugly,” a grumpy Wen Xing’er answered. She couldn’t be bothered pretending at this point. Instead, she anticipated her cousin making a fool of herself and making her happy.
When a girl in a red dress walked out of the practice room, there was a collective gasp from the entrance. The girl was slim and attractive, with a graceful and elegant neck. She radiated a natural nobility. The scarlet Hanfu she wore made her look like an ancient princess, exuding purity and dignity and impressing everyone. Even more surprising was that her makeup was so natural that it didn’t conflict with her clothes at all.
Wen Xinger’s eyes widened significantly at the sight of Wen Ke’an. Her companions took an unintentional step back and muttered, “Oh my, she’s so beautiful.”
The evening party had already begun, and several performances had taken place. The first performances were all upbeat songs and dances to get the crowd going. Spectators filled the audience seats, with the first row reserved for school officials and key guests and the second row for school teachers.
The principal was having a quiet talk with someone close to him in the first row’s center. A man with long hair sat beside the principal, sitting upright and watching the students perform on stage.
“Mr. Wang, these students on stage are all outstanding dance students from our department,” the principal said quietly.
“Hmm,” the man with long hair replied indifferently, showing little reaction.
The principal couldn’t help but look at him again. The dance department at their vocational school was the most known, and they had produced several great pupils who had attained notoriety in the field. The man seated next to the principal was the president of the country’s most well-known dance society. It was extremely tough for pupils to catch his attention and be invited to join his organization. It would be a source of great pride for the school if a student from their school could capture his attention.
“All of the students attending this evening party are the top performers in our dance department. Consider the girl in the center of the stage.
She won first place in a dance competition in the city not long ago. And there’s that girl with short hair; she’s exceptional in street dancing and has won championships,” the principal explained, eager to impress the president.
Despite the principal’s lengthy remarks, the president remained unconcerned. He stood out, stating, “The students on stage have a good physique, but their dance skills are still lacking.”
The evening celebration at the school was rather formal, and after several performances, some members of the audience found it uninspiring.
Xie Hongyi sipped his drink and looked at Gu Ting. Gu Ting, as expected, was not paying attention to the performances. He was preoccupied with his phone.
When Xie Hongyi approached Gu Ting, he leaned in and promptly turned his phone screen away. “Ting-ge, it seems like you’re not interested in the performances at all,” Xie Hongyi said. “Are you chatting with anyone? Perhaps sister-in-law?”
Gu Ting hadn’t responded yet when the host’s voice came from the stage, “Now, please enjoy the dance performance ‘Nirvana.’”
The stage lights dimmed suddenly, and a spotlight shone on the right side of the stage. At the same time, a girl dressed in a red Hanfu walked onto the stage gracefully. She didn’t speak a word but instead cast a beautiful glance towards the audience before starting her dance routine.
“Wow, where did this beauty come from?” Xie Hongyi muttered as he watched the girl on stage.
Despite the fact that the girl’s face was partially obscured by a veil, her exceptional grace and delicate features were visible.
The music began to play, and the girl’s form began to move in time with it. Despite her petite stature, she danced with amazing strength and grace, and her moves were fascinating. Her gown seemed to become an extension of herself, flowing gracefully with every movement. As they were attracted to her emotionally charged performance, the audience fell silent.
When the music stopped, many people in the audience were sluggish to react, and the clapping was delayed. The crowd did not realize the tremendous ability they had just watched until the presenter returned to the stage when applause erupted.
Applause filled the venue, but Wen Ke’an could only see one person in her line of sight, just as they had agreed upon. He was sitting right where she could see him.
Wen Ke’an was unaware that a spotlight was still on her, yet many others noticed her look at that moment. Most people’s ideas immediately went to the word “stunning.”
Gu Ting’s attention was drawn to her as well. The image now reminded him of a dream he’d experienced. He sat silently in the crowd in that dream, while his girl shone brightly on stage amid the flashing lights.
But this time was different.
Her affection had reached him this time, and he felt it deeply.
“Does our school have such a lovely girl? Doesn’t our campus belle look anything like this?” Xie Hongyi mumbled as he watched her fade away.
“This girl has such a slender waist, doesn’t she?” Xie Hongyi said, glancing at Gu Ting.
Before Xie Hongyi could finish his sentence, he was astonished and covered his mouth.
Gu Ting stood up from his seat. “I’ll be right back.”
“Uh, sure,” Xie Hongyi replied dazedly.
After Gu Ting left, Xie Hongyi took a breather and couldn’t help but pat his pal seated on Gu Ting’s other side. “Did you just see that? Didn’t Ting Ge smile?”
“He did smile, right?” Xie Hongyi said again, without waiting for the other person to react. “Did you happen to see it?”
“I didn’t see it clearly, but it seemed like he did smile briefly.”
Xie Hongyi couldn’t stop himself from patting his thigh. “Wow, wow.”
He’d known Gu Ting for several years, and this was the first time he’d seen him smile like that. It was like seeing his beloved, and his glad and satisfied smile could not be hidden.
Love, being in love.
Suddenly, Xie Hongyi thought of something. Damn, could the girl who was dancing just now be his little sister-in-law?
Not only was Xie Hongyi enthralled by Wen Ke’an’s performance, but even the principal in the front row was taken aback for a moment. He couldn’t recall the school ever having such a gifted dancer. In just a few minutes, it was evident that the child had a strong foundation in dancing. What distinguished her was her ability to portray emotions through dance, which not every dancer possessed.
While the principal was buried in thought, the president next to him sprang up and gazed excitedly in the direction where the girl had vanished. After a while of observing, he lowered his gaze to the principal and anxiously inquired, “What’s the name of that girl?”
“Well, Mr. Wang, please wait for a moment, and I’ll have someone confirm it,” the principal replied.
Naturally, the principal had no idea who the dancer was, but he quickly summoned the instructor in charge of the performance. The teacher checked the program list and stated, “Principal, that’s Wen Xing’er’s performance.”
Wen Xing’er had barely exited the backstage area when a senior student recognized her. “I’ve been looking for you, Xing’er. What exactly are you doing here?”
“What’s going on?”
“Please change into the outfit your cousin was wearing just now. One of the people invited by the school seemed to be interested in meeting you. I’m not sure about the specifics, but your cousin’s performance was fantastic, so it’s a good thing!”
Wen Xing’er had just left the backstage area when she heard a voice behind her. She spun around reflexively to see several male students emerge from the small entrance she had just walked through.
Their expressions were not welcoming.
“Why don’t you tell us how you’ve dealt with everything thus far?” “What brought you out?” Wen Xing’er overheard someone cursing quietly.
Everything became evident to Wen Ke’an at this point. She’d been overly generous in her assumptions about Wen Xing’er. She had not expected her cousin to carry out such a plan.
Wen Ke’an slowly backed away, her hand slipping into her pocket.
Gu Ting had taught her some self-defense methods in her past life. Wen Ke’an remembered his words, so she carried a spray she’d created herself in her pocket every time she went out.
“Don’t be in such a rush to leave, classmate.” “How about we make some friends?” one of the guys said as they approached her.
“No, thank you,” Wen Ke’an said quietly, coming closer to the door.
As she approached the exit and considered using her pepper spray to defend herself, the guys across from her acted first. They hurled some white powder at her.
Wen Ke’an became aware of a presence behind her at this point. Someone leaned out and covered her nose and mouth.
Wen Ke’an instinctively tried to resist, but she heard a familiar and reassuring voice from behind. “It’s me.”
Hearing that voice, Wen Ke’an, who had been somewhat panicked, instantly calmed down.
“Gu Ting, what are you doing here?” When Gu Ting appeared, the few individuals on the other side paused for a moment.
Tong, the guy in the middle, took a step forward and smiled at Gu Ting. “It appears that even the well-known Brother Ting admires this little beauty.” “Why don’t we have some fun together?”
Gu Ting paid no attention to him. Instead, he lowered his gaze to see if Wen Ke’an was hurt. He placed his hand on her shoulder and turned her away from the others after ensuring that she was unharmed.
“Stay here, don’t turn around,” Gu Ting instructed her.
“Okay,” Wen Ke’an obediently nodded.
After Wen Ke’an agreed, Gu Ting turned and walked over to the side, picking up a stick nearby.
Sounds of a scuffle and some cursing came from behind him.
Gu Ting fought as though he didn’t have anything to lose, thoroughly overwhelming these handful who had little chance of defending themselves.
They appealed for compassion before long.
“Get lost,” Gu Ting stomped on Tong.
He really wanted to kill them if he could.
“He’s goneinsane! We need to get out of here!”
Several people crawled and scrambled away from the scene.
Gu Ting’s weak breaths could be heard as the broad area gradually quieted down. He was red-eyed from the fight and exuded a violent aura. He couldn’t help but think what she would have gone through if he had come just a second later.
Gu Ting felt uncomfortable and angry inside, and he punched the wall in front of him.
He didn’t want to face her in this state. Gu Ting took a moment to calm down before approaching her slowly.
Wen Ke’an had been obedient and had not turned around, but when Gu Ting neared, he noticed something that made his heart throb.
Her eyes were crimson, and her body trembled slightly.
She must have been terrified.
Gu Ting approached with caution, reaching out to wipe a tear from the corner of her eye.
“I’m sorry, don’t cry,” Gu Ting bowed low to meet her gaze and apologized softly.
Wen Ke’an blinked her eyelashes, which were still quivering slightly, with her lowered gaze and reddened nose from crying. She took a step forward and leaned into his chest, a kitten-like clutch around his waist.
Gu Ting’s heart shook. He glanced down at her, helpless and indulgent, and whispered, “I am dirty.”
Gu Ting was concerned that his clothes would stain hers, but the girl in his arms didn’t move while securely clutching him. Gu Ting couldn’t stand pushing her away and instead let her cling to him.
Wen Ke’an gradually let go of him after a while. They had moved to a corner of the open space, with Gu Ting’s back to a wall.
When Wen Ke’an looked up at Gu Ting, she was met with a pair of pale yet bold eyes.
Wen Ke’an suddenly felt weak in the knees, even though she had kept cool until now.
Gu Ting sensed something was awry and slipped his arm around her waist.
With a turn, Gu Ting pinned her against the wall.
Wen Ke’an felt Gu Ting’s hand, which seemed unusually warm now. He was hot, just like her.
“Are you running a fever?” Wen Ke’an touched his forehead, her voice quiet and slightly nasal from her recent tears, almost coaxing.
Gu Ting also felt a surge of heat for a brief while.
He still had his wits about him and realized that was most likely due to the white powder he had inadvertently inhaled earlier.
“Is everything alright, A-Ting?” Wen Ke’an stroked his cheek because he had been crying earlier.
Gu Ting lost himself in her perfume for a moment, his sight ultimately falling on her crimson lips.
He did, however, preserve a glimmer of sanity. Gu Ting leaned out and gently took her hand, which had been resting on his shoulder. He kept it in his own, his voice hoarse as he whispered, “Don’t move”.
“Are you okay, A-Ting?” Wen Ke’an’s voice trembled.
“I’m fine,” Gu Ting bent down, his chin resting affectionately on her shoulder.
Wen Ke’an wanted to say something, but unexpectedly, she felt a warm touch on her earlobe.
He was kissing her earlobe.
Wen Ke’an’s body trembled.
She heard him murmur softly in her ear, “My baby.”
