On the night Chu Han got engaged to Xie Huaiyan, she had a strange dream.
In her dream, she was twenty years old and hadn’t gone to college. She spent her days hanging out in bars, living a wasted life.
When she was sixteen, she experienced a fire that took her mother’s life and left her with a severe burn on her arm. The event left an ugly scar.
During that time, her best friend died in a car accident, turning her once good life into chaos. Even her personality began to change drastically.
Later, she had a boyfriend who was a small-time thug, not as handsome or kind as Xie Huaiyan. Chu Han couldn’t help but criticize her own poor judgment in the dream.
The dream was just a dream, and Chu Han felt like an observer, watching herself.
She saw herself living in a dilapidated little house, her life aimless and chaotic, wasting time every day. Drinking, smoking, getting tattoos, and fighting—things she would never dare to do before—were all things her dream self did.
Chu Han wished she could wake herself up from this pitiful state. However, she also felt sorry for her dream self, who seemed so lonely without family, friends, or anyone who loved her.
After what felt like a long time, this degraded lifestyle came to an end. She saw her dream self standing on a rooftop one night, looking down at the bright city lights below. The girl was barefoot, holding a bottle of alcohol, her eyes empty and slightly relieved.
Chu Han tried to reach out to stop her dream self but couldn’t do anything. Her heart clenched as she watched her dream self jump off the roof.
At that moment, she heard a desperate, familiar voice behind her, resembling Xie Huaiyan’s voice.
Chu Han didn’t see what was happening behind her. The scene then shifted, and she found herself at a wedding.
The wedding was strange because the bride was dead.
What surprised Chu Han was that the dream Xie Huaiyan appeared and still married her, although she was already dead.
Xie Huaiyan looked worn out in his black suit, his eyes red and tired but his gaze firm and frighteningly cold.
Chu Han knew Xie Huaiyan well enough to realize he was on the verge of collapse, his eyes on her photograph filled with a mixture of familiarity and eeriness. It reminded her of how he looked at her the first time they met at the school gate.
She still remembered the eerie yet deeply affectionate look he gave her, as if looking at a dead person.
Chu Han couldn’t understand why Xie Huaiyan would still want to marry her even though she was dead.
The scenes in the dream changed quickly, and this time it was in a dark room. Chu Han saw a young Xie Huaiyan, who seemed to be around thirteen years old.
Chu Han noticed that the curtains in Xie Huaiyan’s room were always drawn. He didn’t like talking to people and had no friends, spending all his time in his small room.
Until one day, a new neighbor moved in.
The neighbors had a particularly playful little girl, very lively and with a bright smile. The girl often came over to bother him. At first, the housekeeper didn’t let the girl get close to him because Xie Huaiyan rejected the approach of everyone. Yes, he had a kind of eccentricity.
But surprisingly, he didn’t reject the little girl. He was very indulgent towards her and liked her smile. He talked to her, prepared food she liked, and his gaze no longer remained cold, gaining a bit of warmth.
He learned to change himself, to slowly communicate with others. Later, he pulled back the curtains, letting sunlight into his room.
But not long after, one night he was taken away in a luxurious black car. He was moving away and leaving here. He didn’t say goodbye to the girl, but in the car, his eyes kept looking in the direction of her room.
The final dream was from when she was sixteen years old, a memory she held.
She dreamt of the big fire she encountered at sixteen. The fire engulfed the house, many things caught fire, and she was trapped inside. The smoke was too thick, and she soon fainted in the room.
But in the dream, she saw a figure recklessly rushing to save her.
In the dream, it wasn’t Lu Qi who saved her.
It was Xie Huaiyan, whom she hadn’t seen for a long time.
On the day of their engagement, the sun was bright.
After handling everything, Chu Han took Xie Huaiyan to the place where they first met.
In Xie Huaiyan’s small courtyard, the pink roses were in full bloom.
A gentle breeze brought a floral fragrance.
Chu Han held Xie Huaiyan’s hand. She glanced down and noticed the scar on his wrist.
Under her coaxing and threats, Xie Huaiyan finally told her the truth.
It was indeed him who rescued her during that big fire.
He had been injured and spent two months in the hospital.
To not affect her life and to prevent her from feeling guilty and sad, he found someone else, unscarred, to pretend to be him.
The courtyard had a small garden, and it looked somewhat different from before. But the housekeeper kept it very clean.
Chu Han also saw the small swing chair that had been there since childhood. The chair was entwined with blooming flowers.
“Brother, can I sit on that?”
This coincided with her childhood memory. When she first visited his home, she said the same words to him.
Xie Huaiyan’s eyes gently curved as he murmured, “Mm.”
Chu Han looked up at him, smiling. “Then I want you to stay with me.”
The two of them were sitting on a small swing. Chu Han couldn’t help but glance sideways at him repeatedly. Finally, when Xie Huaiyan looked down at her, she tilted her head up slightly and placed a light kiss on the corner of his mouth.
Remembering the lonely young boy he used to be, alone in his room, Chu Han felt a pang of heartache.
She leaned into him, hugging his waist affectionately, and softly called him, “A-Yan.”
He moved his hand slightly and tightened his grip on hers. “Mm?”
The warm sunlight fell on her delicate face, and her eyes curved into a smile.
She said, “From now on, my A-Yan will never be alone again.”
