Just as disappointment began to show on Suji’s face, Rex brought something to her. It was a long, thin wooden stick with a unique shape. One end was split and spread out like a palm. Rex demonstrated by swinging it like a whip. The palm-shaped part wrapped around a rock in front and sent it flying in the direction he swung.

Suji gasped in surprise, and Rex explained lightly, “It’s made from peeling tree bark. You can use it to attack or to escape.”

He swung it around a thick branch. The palm-shaped part coiled around the branch, allowing Rex to hang onto it briefly.

“You can’t use it for long. It’s temporarily made, so it has limited durability. But the enemy won’t expect this, so it’s good for escaping when they’re caught off guard.”

Rex placed the stick in Suji’s hand. She gulped. It took time to swing the stick as smoothly as he did, and even more time to learn to hang from a tree. But once she got used to it, she could maneuver it freely like a whip, and it was lightweight, making it easy to carry. Seeing Suji handle it well, Rex raised an eyebrow, impressed.

“You’re doing well. For a beginner.”

When Rex patted her head, Suji realized it was a sign of praise. She muttered bashfully, “I was good at jump rope. I’ve also tried rubber bands…”

Though he didn’t understand what she said, Rex smiled at the sound of her chattering. He then looked towards the hill Suji had pointed at. That area was open and had fewer swamp creatures. Instead, something else lived there.

“Let’s eat and then set off,” he said.

They would need a weapon to prepare for any sudden situations. Rex looked at the stick swaying in Suji’s hand. She seemed fascinated by the gift, continually tapping the ground with it. Rex watched her with satisfaction and then set off to find prey.
