Surviving in Apocalypse with Children

Acting Like a Vinegar

Bo Yiliang lay on the bed and slept for a while. He glanced at the peacefully sleeping children beside him and sat up from the bed, thinking worriedly about Wen Xiaoxiao.

So he put on a coat and slippers before heading downstairs.

Only then did he realize that the RV had already stopped.

Walking outside, he saw Wen Xiaoxiao chatting happily with another man.

His brows furrowed, and his face darkened with displeasure.

A sour feeling surged in his heart, emitting an air of jealousy.

“Brother Wu, I came here to find a boy around eleven or twelve years old. Do you have anyone like that here?” Wen Xiaoxiao asked, ignoring Bo Yiliang’s presence.

“Yes, I’ll take you there!” Wu Xiaoyi smiled, his eyes showing a hint of ambiguous affection.

Bo Yiliang saw everything clearly and snorted with disdain internally.

Wu Xiaoyi led Wen Xiaoxiao inside. The place was very damp, emitting a musty smell, and felt cold and gloomy.

Wen Xiaoxiao wrinkled her nose. While observing the huddled group of people inside, she suddenly felt uncomfortable.

The scene was clear with just one glance.

There were around fifty people, roughly twenty children and twenty elderly, with only a dozen adults aged between thirty and forty.

Looking at the huddled children, Wen Xiaoxiao felt fortunate that her five children hadn’t suffered so much.

She handed everything in her hands to Wu Xiaoyi and said, “Brother Wu, please distribute this food to everyone!”

“Sure, thank you, Xiaoxiao.” Wu Xiaoyi did not refuse and accepted Wen Xiaoxiao’s kindness. He looked at her deeply and concealed the affection he felt for her.

He and Wen Xiaoxiao had grown up together until she was about six or seven years old, and then she moved away. When she was young, she was very lively and liked to laugh, and seeing her now, he couldn’t help but admire her maturity and beauty.

Shaking off those thoughts, Wu Xiaoyi distributed the food to everyone.

All eyes were fixed on the food. A boy around eleven years old looked at Wen Xiaoxiao timidly.

He didn’t know why, but he felt an inexplicable desire to be close to this sister.

“Peach, which one is my younger brother?” Wen Xiaoxiao walked slowly and communicated with Peach through her thoughts.

“Master, it’s the kid dressed in the most tattered clothes and looking at you.” Peach blew a bubble in the space and responded.

Wen Xiaoxiao was stunned. Her gaze landed on the boy dressed in the most worn-out clothes and looking at her timidly.

His eyes were round and big, very similar to hers, but the color in them seemed a bit dull.

As if sensing her gaze, the little boy looked at this big sister with a bit of an evasive and uneasy expression.

Wen Xiaoxiao’s nose tingled when she said this, and tears unconsciously streamed down her face.

“Little brother, I’m your sister. Will you come with me?” Wen Xiaoxiao walked briskly to his side and said gently.

The young boy lowered his head, and his eyelashes trembled lightly with extreme unease.

“I… I’m dirty.” After being silent for a while, the young boy finally spoke.

“No, you’re not dirty,” Wen Xiaoxiao reassured him.

“Come with sister and leave this place, okay? Sister will take care of you in the future.” Wen Xiaoxiao looked at him expectantly, tears lingering in her eyes.

The young boy was still feelimgunsure, but he nodded subconsciously. “Okay!”

Wen Xiaoxiao lifted the boy from the corner. He was dirty, emitting a moldy and unpleasant odor.

But Wen Xiaoxiao didn’t care. Looking at his small and thin figure, she couldn’t help but feel heartache.

Wu Xiaoyi looked at the scene in confusion. As far as he knew, she was the only child in her family!

If there is really a younger brother, why was he here?

Wen Xiaoxiao walked towards Wu Xiaoyi and said, “Brother Wu, I’ll bring down a few blankets later. Let’s talk about everything tomorrow. I’ll leave now.”

Saying that, Wen Xiaoxiao walked away with the young boy in her arms.

The little boy felt the warmth of Wen Xiaoxiao, a little reluctant to part, yet a bit puzzled. Why did he call him his brother, and why did she say she was his sister? It was a bit confusing.

Wen Xiaoxiao reached the RV and was about to go inside when she noticed Bo Yiliang standing there and looking at her with a silent and dark expression.

“Why are you here? Didn’t I ask you to watch the children? Standing here is frightening,” Wen Xiaoxiao said.

Bo Yiliang rolled his eyes and silently disagreed with her.

The boy was carried inside by Wen Xiaoxiao. He looked around curiously, his eyes moving.

“Little brother, sister, I will take you to take a bath first. After you’re clean, we will eat. Is that okay?” Wen Xiaoxiao looked at him and said gently.

“Okay!” The little boy’s throat was a bit dry, and he spoke slowly.

Bo Yiliang became even more jealous when he saw Wen Xiao not paying attention to him.

Wen Xiaoxiao took the little boy into her room, prepared hot water, and looked at him and asked, “Can you wash yourself, or do you want your sister to help you?”

The little boy’s face turned red slightly, and he felt a bit embarrassed. He shook his head and said, “I can do it myself.”

He used to bathe himself in the orphanage, and now that he’s so old, he’s even more embarrassed to have someone bathe him.

Wen Xiaoxiao looked at him hesitating to let her help and then said, “Alright, sister will get you a set of pajamas. You hurry up and take a bath!”

I understand childhood sweethearts having affection for each other when meeting after a long period of separation, but they stopped seeing each other at six-years-old. I don’t know how or why someone could still hold affection for someone around seventeen years later when they only knew each other as very young children. There’s a vast difference in temperament and experiences from six-year-olds to adults in their twenties, so it’s really weird to think he still holds feelings for her after all that time and can even remember her. Even I don’t remember children I met when I was that young, lol. As for Wen Xiaoxiao, her personality seems to have changed from a cold one to an understanding and caring one, so although the transition wasn’t very good or believable, hopefully she’ll stick to her new change so her random acts and thoughts of concern don’t seem out of tune with her nature.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
