Chapter 74
<If you become healthier, you could divorce me.
Marry a woman from a better family.>
Divorce me?
Marry another woman?
His anger boiled as she casually poured out such words.
Even when she brought the alcohol and suggested drinking together.
“Let’s pretend it didn’t happen.”
A deep and long sigh escaped from him.
<So let’s pretend it didn’t happen.
That day was just like drinking and having a bad dream, nothing more, nothing less.>
Those words lingered in his ears for a long time.
After contemplating it repeatedly, the conclusion reached was one.
Selene truly wanted to forget about that night.
“A bad dream…”
Even after spending the night together, sharing those intimate moments.
<Let’s pretend it didn’t happen.>
Yet, how could she say it so casually, with such a carefree face, suggesting to make everything ‘nonexistent’?
How, how.
No matter how much he agonized over it, there was only one answer.
“So that’s how it is after all.”
A self-deprecating smile played on his lips.
In truth, he might not have even realized the information that he already knew.
“I guess I don’t want to get involved with someone who’s destined to die anyway.”
* * *
“Rona, you.”
As soon as I returned to the room, I glanced at Rona.
“I’m sorry, Madam.”
Rona raised both hands in front of her face, pretending to wipe away tears.
“But I had no choice.”
Rona spoke to me with her eyes wide open like a rabbit.
“People have principles! Sometimes they say, ‘I’ll do anything for the Madam.'”
“But Madam couldn’t see the Master’s gaze!”
Rona shouted as if she felt unjust.
“What happened?”
“If it doesn’t disappear immediately, they’ll end the world, that kind of atmosphere.”
“…Was it that serious?”
I could sense the chilling aura from behind, but it seemed even more intense in reality.
“Yes. It was no joke. Just thinking about it, ugh.”
Rona shivered as she spoke.
“But why were you so angry?”
“But why were you so angry?”
We both spoke simultaneously and looked at each other’s faces at the same time.
“…I don’t know?”
“Don’t you know, Madam?”
“Yeah…”
“You seemed really angry. I even thought, after I leave, how will the Master treat the Madam…”
“Why would you think that and leave me behind?”
“Well, I thought Master might do something rough…”
“Rough, what?”
“Worried that he might express love roughly,” she says.
What is she talking about again?
Can’t she develop her thoughts in a direction I can understand?
“Ah, don’t worry, Madam. Everything is already resolved anyway.”
“Resolved? What’s resolved? Is the strong wind blowing like that resolved?”
“Just solve it through conversation.”
“Conversation…”
Amoide and I somehow felt that the more we talked, the more tangled things became. Whenever we tried to have a conversation, it always ended up in a fight. It got more complicated, angrier, and sometimes, when we attempted to discuss things with a drink in hand, it led to a very messy situation…
“Let’s stop thinking about it.”
I shook my head, trying to shake off the intrusive thoughts.
“Anyway, it seems like conversation is not a good method. The more we talk, the more we end up fighting.”
Looking at me like that, Rona silently bit her lip.
It was clearly a suppressed smile.
“No, it’s not like that.”
Rona covered her mouth and seemed to be dying of laughter.
“Huh?”
Why is this getting ominous?
“Why are you laughing?”
As I saw Rona’s meaningful smile, I became increasingly uneasy.
“Well… it’s not about conversation.”
“So?”
“It’s about physical communication.”
Rona quickly said.
“What…”
I half-opened my mouth and mumbled like a fish.
“As they say, reconciliation between spouses happens in bed.”
“Who says that?”
Who said such awful things to this rabbit?
Who!
Who said such nonsense as reconciliation happening in bed!
“I know everything.”
“What do you know, what!”
How would I know something I don’t even know!
“Anyway, don’t worry. The Master’s heart will eventually be at ease.”
Rona confidently stated.
“But why were you angry? You even spent time together…”
“Quiet, quiet!”
I brought my finger to my lips and gestured for silence.
“There was no such thing!”
“What? But clearly…”
“I’ve decided it didn’t happen.”
Ignoring Rona’s puzzled gaze as if asking, “What are you talking about?” I spoke with determination.
“Nothing happened.”
So, it didn’t happen, absolutely nothing.
“Madam…”
“Anyway, let’s leave it at that.”
I silenced Rona’s attempts to speak.
“So, don’t talk to anyone about it.”
Although Rona seemed puzzled, she nodded her head shortly after.
After that Day
Amoide seemed to draw a clear line with me. Although he didn’t ignore me or treat me coldly, he didn’t smile, make jokes, or tease me. I couldn’t precisely define it, but it felt like I was somewhere in the middle between being a stranger and someone he knew. If I had to define it, I was just a person living in the same house – nothing more, nothing less.
However, since I took responsibility for his health, I had to face him, whether it felt awkward or not.
“Sigh.”
I stood in front of his door, took a deep breath, and knocked.
Tap, tap.
A short permission sound was heard, and I pushed the door and entered.
“Amoide.”
He was sitting in a long chair, reading a book. I cautiously approached him.
A gentle smile played on my face, lifting the corners of my mouth.
“Have you had your meal?”
“Yeah.”
“Was it good? I tried it earlier…”
“It was decent.”
“Is there anything else you want to eat? I can ask Jang to prepare it for you.”
“I’ll manage.”
“How about asking for a fish dish?”
“Do whatever.”
All the conversations ended abruptly.
I tried to find something to say, but it wasn’t easy.
“Anything else to say?”
He looked at me intently.
“No.”
“Then, leave.”
The atmosphere was so cold that it was indescribable.
I didn’t expect a warm welcome, but there was no need for this icy reception.
“Um… Amoidee?”
I called him quietly, and Amoide turned to me with a face that seemed to say, “What’s the matter now?”
“Shall we talk… a bit?”
Before I could suggest, he cut me off.
“I want to rest.”
She deserves it.
Really, she doesn’t deserve it. He’s been this awful to her the entire time.
