How much time had passed? A strange, smoky smell reached Floria’s nose, causing her to shift in bed.
‘Hmm… What is this smell?’
‘Could it be… a fire!?’
Startled, Floria’s eyes snapped open at the loud banging on the door.
“Princess, Princess! It’s urgent. We must escape immediately!”
Her lady-in-waiting Aura burst into the room, her face pale.
“Aura, what’s happening? Is it a fire?”
Still trying to comprehend the situation, Floria remained sitting on her bed.
“Princess! For now, let’s go to the deck! Prince Franz will surely protect us. The cabins are dangerous. Let’s head to the deck in case the ship sinks.”
“Just a moment, Aura. Is it really a fire?”
“No, Princess, it’s something even more terrifying. Now, come!”
Confused and overwhelmed by Aura’s serious expression, Floria followed her lead.
Hastily, they made their way from the cabin to the deck, Floria barefoot. As they ascended the narrow, seldom-used back staircase, they heard a deafening roar.
“What on earth is happening?”
“Shh, Princess. It’s an attack of some sort. Prince Franz is not in the cabin either. Let’s hide somewhere on the deck until the commotion subsides.”
The fear of being caught in the midst of an attack flickered through Floria’s mind. But as Aura had said, staying in the cabin would be dangerous in the event of a sinking. With determination, Floria followed Aura’s lead and went up to the deck.
The deck, under the new moon, should have been pitch black. However, it was illuminated as if it were daytime, with flickering torches, and muscular men with bare upper bodies wielding swords, spears, and axes, easily knocking down Prince Franz’s well-trained marines. The smell of burnt soot mixed with the stench of fresh blood grazed their noses, and the wave of nausea that she’d almost forgotten, resurged within her. The flowers that had adorned the deck for Floria were trampled and scattered here and there.
“Ah…!”
Even Aura, who had climbed to the deck first, recoiled at the sight before her.
Prince Franz’s marines were simply running for their lives in face of the sudden attack of fierce sea barbarians.
“What about Prince Franz?”
As Floria took a shaky step forward, she collided with a massive man who emerged from the shadows of the cargo. The man swung the axe he held, aiming to strike Floria.
“P-Princess…!”
Aura let out a scream that sounded like the end of the world.
However, as the big man realized his target was a young woman, he abruptly halted his axe swing and instead folded Floria’s body in half, lifting her onto his shoulder.
“No, what are you doing? Stop, put me down!”
