As Elaine looked at Ash with a happy expression on her face, she heard the sound of footsteps running from nearby. She was the first to notice the sound and turned her head to identify the source.
It was an old man. He was holding a bucket full of water in his hands.
‘A water pail? Why does he have…”
Elaine’s face that had a puzzled expression, suddenly hardened. She quickly jumped in front of her commander.
The next moment, the old man threw the bucket forward as hard as he could.
Sigh.
“What just happened…?…!”
The knights behind were startled and rushed forward. Elaine looked back at Ash, water dripping from her body. He froze, unable to take his eyes from her.
‘Luckily it doesn’t look like anything got on him.’
She looked carefully to see if any water had splashed onto him, then looked at the old man, who had tried to pour water onto Ash. Her insides were heating up with anger. The water-soaked cookies in her hand turned cold and mushy.
The old man threw down the bucket and shouted, struggling.
“My son died because of your mother! Why are you still alive?!”
For a moment, Elaine felt dizzy. It was one of the victims of Seveka who had lost a member of their family.
Your child died because of Bella? So you’re taking out your anger on Ash? Do you think he deserved it because he was the son of the witch?
Don’t be ridiculous. Nobody should be burdened with a sin they never committed.
It wasn’t even Bella’s fault that Seveka was destroyed. Elaine wanted so say that she was just being used and didn’t deserve the hate of the people, but she could only grit her teeth.
Then, she felt someone’s hand grabbing her by the shoulder.
“Wait.”
Ash gently brushed Elaine’s shoulder. Her collar, soaked in cold water, started to freeze in the winter wind. His brow furrowed slightly. He then took off his cloak and wrapped it around her.
“Your clothes are all wet. Are you trying to catch a cold?”
“I’m okay.”
Elaine shook her head and took a step back. She was worried that his cloak would get wet because of her. Ash said irritably, stopping her from undoing the cloak.
“You’re not okay.”
He clicked his tongue.
“I could have avoided it, there was no need for you to block for me.”
He then pointed to another knight nearby.
“You, please escort Dame Elaine back to her quarters.”
“Yes, Dame Elaine, let’s go.”
“…”
Elaine hesitated as she looked at Ash, who was still watching her. He frowned slightly, urging her.
“What are you waiting for, I told you to go back.”
“What are you going to do with that person?”
“He will be punished appropriately.”
Right. She was sure he would handle it just fine. She was just worrying too much. She followed the knight back to the estate.
Ash waited until Elaine was far away and then looked back at the old man with a cold face. The old man had already been subdued by the remaining knights. Although he has acted calm while Elaine was present, he was actually quite unhappy. To be precise, he was furious.
Usually, he was calm and indifferent in everything, but strangely enough, the moment he had seen Elaine get hit by the water, his whole body felt uncomfortable.
Even as he was being tied up, the old man continued to curse Ash.
“You coward! Using your subordinates as a shield, you are as much of a piece of trash as the witch!”
“Shut up. If it had been boiling water, you would have died right here.”
The downcast purple eyes were dazzling. The old man, who had been speaking without a care, trembled at Ash’s unexpected words.
“Take him to the dungeon. His punishment will be decided later.”
Attempting to throw water on the Duke was a serious crime. At his gesture, the knights dragged the old man away. Ash silently looked at the place the old man had been. Hearing hateful words was not uncommon, he was used to it. However, this time, his expression was complicated.
