Chapter 18 – We have eggs to eat
How could she survive this lawless era with her weak body? It seems that when her situation gets better, she must take proper care of her body. Of course, she’ll also take care of her mom, Yan Shuqin, Yan Shuxue and Yan Shuyun as well.
Just as she was worrying about how she would bring home twenty-five pounds of rice and a basket of eggs, Yan Xiaosi heard a gentle voice.
“Xiaosi.”
She heard Yan Shuqin calling for her.
Yan Xiaosi looked toward the voice and saw Yan Shuqin coming over to her. She hurriedly called Yan Shuqin, “Big sister, I’m here.”
Yan Shuqin ran to her. She saw a big bag of rice and a basket of eggs. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of them.
“Xiaosi, why did you buy so much from the village head?”
Village head Liu always sold things at a higher price than the town. Yan Xiaosi knew that Yan Shuqin was worried about the amount of money spent, so she quickly explained, “Sister, these were not bought with money.”
Yan Shuqin’s heart skipped a beat.
“It wasn’t bought with money!? Then how did you get all these?”
A large bag of rice and a basket full of eggs would cost more than 300 wen. Everyone knew that Liu Qianhe, the village head, was not an easy person to bargain with. She was afraid that Yan Xiaosi would upset Liu Qianhe and would face consequences in the future.
Yan Xiaosi was too weak, so she asked Yan Shuqin to carry the bag of rice and she carried the basket of eggs.
“Big sister, don’t worry. I exchanged for these with Liu Qianqian using my own item.”
Yan Shuqin was relieved and finally lifted the bag of rice over her shoulder.
On the way back, Yan Shuqin was still worried. “Xiaosi, what did you exchange with Liu Qianqian for so many things?”
She was sure she knew everything Yan Xiaosi owned and there wasn’t anything valuable.
Yan Xiaosi was so tired that she could barely speak. She gasped and replied, “A beautiful mirror. I found it in the mountains when we were there earlier.”
Yan Shuqin was finally satisfied.
Miss Zhong, Yan Shuxue and Yan Shuyun were waiting for the food to start cooking. Miss Zhong was squatting in front of the stove with firewood. Yan Shuxue and Yan Shuyun stood on the mud dam in front of the grass temple that was their home.
Seeing Yan Shuqin and Yan Xiaosi from afar, they were overjoyed.
Although she couldn’t see exactly what Yan Shuqin and Yan Xiaosi had brought back, Yan Shuyun rushed into the kitchen excitedly to tell Miss Zhong.
“Mom, big sister and fourth brother are back.”
No matter what they brought back, it was at least better than wild vegetables.
Miss Zhong’s face also brightened and she said happily, “Yun’er, hurry and go help them with your second sister.”
“I’ll go right away.”
Yan Shuyun called Yan Shuxue to go with her and they rushed to help Yan Shuqin and Yan Xiaosi.
Yan Xiaosi’s small body was really tired. Upon meeting Yan Shuxue, she hurriedly handed Yan Shuxue her basket of eggs.
Yan Shuyun stepped up to help Yan Shuqin with the rice, but her eyes were glued to Yan Shuxue’s basket of eggs.
“Big sister, fourth brother, how much did it cost you to buy so much rice and eggs?”
Yan Shuqin replied, “When we were on the mountain today, Xiaosi found a mirror and used it to exchange with Liu Qianqian.”
Back at the grass temple, Miss Zhong asked them the same question again.
Meanwhile, Yan Shuqin added firewood until it burned vigorously.
