Chapter 13 – Going Home Together

“Little brother, what’s your name? You seem to know a lot about herbs?”

Yan Xiaosi answered casually, “Yan Xiaosi. All the children in the mountains can recognize these herbs.”

Long Hao didn’t believe it. How could an ordinary mountain boy produce such a strange pill? He knew he wouldn’t be able to find more information, so he just stayed quiet and walked slowly down the mountain with Yan Xiaosi’s help.

“Xiaosi.”

“Fourth brother, where are you?”

Zhong Shi, Yan Shuqin, Yan Shuxue and Yan Shuyun had already finished cutting their bundles of firewood. But when they finished, they couldn’t find Yan Xiaosi and called for him anxiously.

Long Hao heard them and asked ,”Your family?”

Yan Xiaosi replied, “My mother and my three sisters.”

Long Hao was so heavy that she was about to collapse. She quickly answered, “Mom, big sister, second sister, third sister, I’m here.”

As Ms. Zhong and the sisters heard her answer, they felt relieved and moved toward her.

When Ms. Zhong saw her walking with a man with a red rash on his face, she asked guardedly, “Xiaosi, where did you run off to? Who is this?”

Long Hao looked at Yan Xiaosi, indicating for her to explain.

Yan Xiaosi turned her head and answered Ms. Zhong, “Mom, I encountered a wolf before and it was Brother Long Hao who saved me. But Brother Long Hao got injured.”

Ms. Zhong had always been soft-hearted. Seeing the wound on Long Hao’s arm, she felt guilty.

“Mr. Long saved you from harm?”

Yan Xiaosi was trying to figure out how to get Ms. Zhong to agree for Long Hao to stay over for a few days in their home to recover. Hearing her question, Yan Xiaosi quickly nodded.

As it happened, the wound on Long Hao’s arms was somewhat uneven. It looked like it could have come from bites from wild animals.

“Mom, Brother Long Hao got injured while he was saving me. Can you let him stay in our house for a few days while he recovers from the injury?”

Ms. Zhong was unsure.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to agree. But there were only three rooms in the old temple. One for Xiaosi, one for herself and her three daughters, and the outer room as a kitchen. She couldn’t let Xiaosi’s savior live in the kitchen. It was likely too small for him to fit in.

“Xiaosi, our family situation…”

Before Ms. Zhong could finish, Yan Xiaosi interrupted. “Let Brother Long sleep with me. I’ll take the floor.”

She didn’t mind sleeping on the floor. It wasn’t really any different from her wooden bed.

“How is that okay?” Ms. Zhong immediately rejected it.

Although Xiaosi was a boy in the eyes of outsiders, she was still a girl after all. How could she stay in the same room as a man? If the news spread, the girl’s family’s reputation would be ruined.

Long Hao flexed his arm on Yan Xiaosi’s shoulder to warn Yan Xiaosi about Ms. Zhong.

Yan Xiaosi almost fell over. She glanced at him and whispered, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it.”

“Mom, we can’t be ungrateful. How about I let Brother Long Hao sleep in my room, and I sleep on the floor of your room?”

Yan Shuqin, Yan Shuxue and Yan Shuyun didn’t object.

Even if word got out, there wouldn’t be any problems since he was their brother.

Ms. Zhong finally relented. She helped Yan Xiaosi support Long Hao down the mountain.

Yan Shuqin, Yan Shuxue and Yan Shunyun each carried a bundle of firewood. Since Ms. Zhong needed to help Yan Xiaosi support Long Hao, she could only leave her bundle of firewood on the mountain.

Fortunately, there was no shortage of firewood on Four Sisters Mountain. Even if someone discovered the bundle, no one would care to take it.

Reaching the dilapidated house that doesn’t offer much shelter from wind nor rain, Long Hao finally understood why Yan Xiaosi’s eyes lit up every time he saw money.
