Obsessed with Regressors

CHAPTER 26.1

“Oh my god.”

Claire, who was sitting on one side of the living room, raised her head in surprise at her mother’s moans. Oh my. She waved her hand as a sign to Claire that it was no big deal. And she quickly checked what newspaper her mother was reading.

Balcian Daily.

Fortunately, her mother’s promise not to read Currant’s whispers in the drawing room while there were guests still seemed to be in effect. Thanks to this, the family read Whisper of the Currents every night before going to bed. No matter how much she thought about it, it seemed like it’s interfering with a good night’s sleep. After reading provocative articles about so-and-so’s affair with so-and-so before going to bed, or so-and-so’s marital fight, it seemed a bit difficult to sleep.

“Why, mother?”

She signaled to Claire once again that it was okay and moved to sit next to her mother and asked. Normally, she would have been sitting right next to her mother and reading Whisper of the Currents, but this was also one of the things Claire changed during her stay. She didn’t think it would be a good idea for her mother to see her grown daughter snuggled up next to her mother and reading the same newspaper.

“They say the culprit has been caught.”

“The culprit?”

“The criminal who only attacks ladies.”

Wouldn’t that be a good thing? It may be elastic, but she didn’t think it’s an article that would make you moan. When she craned her neck to look at the newspaper, her mother changed the direction of the newspaper for her and continued.

“But the culprit is Sir Mysto or something?”

“Sir Mysto?”

Claire asked in surprise before her. Who was Sir Mysto?

“Do you know, Lord Lannon?”

Claire nodded her head in response to her mother’s question, then paused and spoke cautiously.

“I don’t know, but I heard the name. Baroness Kernell’s…”

“Ah.”

She remembered. She let out an exclamation without realizing it and then quickly shut her mouth. Sir Gut Mysto. The lover of Baroness Kernell. That’s why the name was familiar. She heard people whispering.

“Sir Mysto is the culprit?”

“Yes. They say it could have been this man who attacked Baroness Kernell.”

Her mother said that as she read the article one more time. Was Baroness Kernell the first victim? After thinking about that, she soon realized something strange.

“I heard that Sir Mysto was somewhere else during Baroness Kernell’s attack.”

Sir Ryan said that. Lord Mysto had nothing to do with Baroness Kernell’s accident. He said that if he had been there, the magistrates would have been investigating him already.

“Well, the article doesn’t say anything like that.”

That was when her mother said that after checking the article again. Suddenly, someone knocked on the living room door. When she turned her head, the butler stuck his head out through the opening and spoke.

“Sorry to disturb you, ma’am. Miss, a guest has arrived.”

A guest? Now? When she looked at her mother in surprise, her mother looked as if she had had someone come today. It didn’t look like that. Meanwhile, the butler approached her and handed out a business card.

“This is Miss Rogoso.”

She was just telling the story of Baroness Kernell. She took the business card and followed the butler out of the parlor. Miss Rogoso was in the little drawing-room. She guessed they assigned her to a small living room because she didn’t have a lot of friends or contacts.

“Miss Rogoso.”

When she entered, Miss Rogoso jumped up from her seat. She thought she would look happy, but it turned out to be the opposite. She was confused when she saw her anxious face. Had she seen the article yet? She thought her face would be brighter if she found out that they had caught the person who harmed Baroness Kernell.

“Lady Biscon. Have you read today’s newspaper?”

What? She thought she hadn’t seen the newspaper, but she guessed she did. She said, inviting her to sit down.

“I saw it. I heard that Sir Mysto is the culprit of the recent incident.”

“No.”

What? Miss Logoso, who immediately refuted my words, covered her mouth with her hand, as if she wanted to make a mistake. And she spoke again.

“Other victims might be like that. But not my sister.”

“No?”

Even Lord Ryan said so. It wasn’t Lord Mysto who attacked Baroness Kernell. However, Sir Ryan seemed to be friendly with Sir Mysto. So, wouldn’t it be understandable that he wasn’t investigated by the magistrate? She didn’t know why Ms. Logoso came to see her, so she tilted her head. Didn’t it make sense that she came here to tell Eugene that it wasn’t Sir Mysto who attacked Baroness Kernell?

“No. I don’t think it’s Sir Mysto.”

Umm. She looked at Ms. Rogoso for a moment and then asked.

“Can I ask why you think that?”

“I’ll tell you up front, I hate Sir Mysto. He is a scoundrel with no shame.”

This was quite harsh treatment for someone who said he was not the culprit. However, she also partially agreed with Ms. Rogoso’s judgment. After all, he was the lover of the married Baroness Kernell. It’s true that there was no shame.

“But I don’t think he made my sister like that. As for the other victims, maybe it was Sir Mysto’s doing. But not to my sister.”

Huh. What was the reason for being so confident? She quietly looked at Miss Rogoso and asked.

“Why? Why do you believe so much in Sir Mysto’s innocence?”

Despite being a shameless scoundrel, she believed in his innocence. Miss Rogoso hesitated for a moment in response to her question and then spoke in a low voice.

“He was with me.”

Huh? A strange thought occurred in her head. Sir Mysto was with Miss Rogoso when Baroness Kernell was attacked? And Miss Rogoso has been keeping it a secret all this time?

“It’s not what you think.”

“I hope so.”

She spoke calmly. Miss Rogoso just said that Sir Mysto was a shameless scoundrel. So maybe it wasn’t the first thing she thought of. Then there was only one answer. She said with a sigh.

“You tried to persuade him to break up with the Baroness.”

The next moment, Miss Rogoso buried her face in her hands, as if she was collapsing. She let out something that was either crying or moaning in her guilt and frustration.

“It’s because of me.”

Miss Rogoso managed to make an audible sound. She didn’t think there was anything wrong with persuading her sister’s lover to break up with her sister. She winked and said thank you to the servant who had brought out the tea.

“Miss Rogoso just did what anyone who cared about her sister would have done.”

If Oliver had done something like that, she would have convinced the other person to break up. Oh, and of course she would break Oliver’s leg. But Miss Rogoso didn’t seem to feel guilty about that. She raised her head and looked at her. She must have cried a little and her eyes were red.

“That day, Sir Mysto was originally going to see my sister.”

She felt a bad energy. As she paused without saying a word, Miss Rogoso continued.

“But I asked Sir Mysto to meet me without telling anyone. My sister had to go back to her house alone.”

Then, he was attacked and became unconscious.

‘Oh my.’

She understood Miss Rogoso’s guilt. Why she wanted to protect Baroness Kernell. Then Sir Mysto was not really the culprit. At least in Baroness Kernell’s case. But that’s what it said in the article. She thought it was strange. That was an idea she had been having for a while. Her vague thoughts gradually turned into confidence. She asked her to wait a moment and returned to the living room where her mother was.

“Mom, that article from earlier. Do you also know why Sir Mysto attacked Baroness Kernell?”

It seemed like things were a bit awkward with Claire. Her mother and Claire seemed happy to see her back. Her mother quickly went back to the article they had just seen and looked through it one more time.

“Um, wait, I’m here. I heard Baroness Kernell wanted to break up.”

“With Sir Mysto?”

In response to her question, her mother looked at her with a strange expression. And then she turned her gaze back to the newspaper and said,

“No, wait, Baron Kernel testified?”

Immediately her eyes met Claire’s. She said she understood. She followed her out of the living room and lowered her voice.

“Even in my dreams Baroness Kernell was murdered.”

“I beg your pardon?”

She was shocked and shouted at the unexpected story. And after gesturing that it was nothing to her mother, who turned around wondering what was going on, she took Claire with her and entered the empty parlor.

“In a dream?”

“Yes. I forgot. I just remembered.”

When she told Eugenie  that it wasn’t her business and that she had forgotten, she was about to open her mouth, but stopped and nodded. This could happen. Because everyone forgets if it’s not their business.

“So you’re saying that Mrs. Kernel will be murdered again?”

“But the culprit is different this time.”

“Who is it?”

Claire frowned and began to think deeply about something. She guessed she couldn’t remember much, right? The dreams so far have been precognitive dreams. Because most of it actually happened. If the culprit was different, they may have caught the wrong culprit this time. This meant that Sir Mysto may have been falsely accused. That seemed pretty plausible.

“What kind of woman was she?”

After thinking about it, Claire spoke in an uncertain voice. She continued with her brows still furrowed.

“I heard a rumor that she was Baron Kernell’s mistress.”
