On the fifth floor, though there wasn’t a resident waiter, whenever Letticia visited, one of the staff from the fourth floor would come up, so orders were taken quickly.
“I’ll have a soup bowl, a tricolor berry tart, and a white opera cake. What about you, sir?”
“I’ll have a ham sandwich, mille-feuille, and grape juice. Ah, can we order some takeout as well?”
The staff member nodded at Ezkhiel’s question.
“Of course, sir.”
“In that case, I’d like five madeleines and five lemon tarts, and one plain pound cake.”
“Understood. I will prepare them so you can take them with you when you leave.”
After the staff set up the meal and went downstairs, the guards stepped back outside the door. Although they couldn’t leave an unmarried man and woman alone, the door was left slightly open.
The time alone was precious, so Letticia immediately started a conversation as they began to eat.
“There’s actually one more thing I’d like to thank you as my gratitude, sir Bright.”
Ezkhiel looked at her with a puzzled expression. Letticia spoke directly, not intending to beat around the bush.
“The evidence of Ralph Barthset’s corruption, which my brother submitted to His Highness the Crown Prince, was collected by you, right?”
“Did Lenard tell you that?”
Ezkhiel looked away awkwardly. He seemed unaccustomed to receiving gratitude, similar to how he reacted when Letticia thanked him at the ball.
“Yes. He told me when I said I would help you with your shopping.”
Lenard’s intention was to warn her not to hurt someone as good as Ezkhiel, who had helped her so much, but Letticia decided to use it as an excuse to get closer to him.
“This building was also given as a reward from the Barthset family. So, it’s thanks to you that I can have it, and I must thanks to you for that.”
“Actually, I should be the one apologizing. If it weren’t for me, Ralph Barthset wouldn’t have bothered you.”
Once again, Ezkhiel didn’t readily accept the gratitude. Instead, he tried to apologize.
However, this time Letticia had much to say. At the ball, Ezkhiel’s inability to dance was a fact she could overlook, but regarding Ralph Barthset’s issue, Ezkhiel was not at fault at all.
“Of course not. I was lost back then, so I would have asked anyone for directions. With his twisted personality, he would have started a fight regardless of whether it was with you or someone else.”
“Nevertheless, it is a fact that his resentment towards me also incited his malice toward you, lady. Despite his wicked nature, the extent to which he fabricated and spread rumors to ruin your future was likely intended to cause me feels a distress.”
“Excuse me, sir Bright. We only met once, so why would he think I was that significant and will give you a great distress feeling cause of that false rumours about me?”
Letticia pointed out, feel astonished, but Ezkhiel’s next words left her speechless.
“It’s embarrassing to say, but Ralph Barthset probably thought I was trying to court you.”
“What?”
Letticia was at a loss for words at the absurd statement. Ezkhiel hesitated but still continued.
“He was eager to find fault with me, so it didn’t matter whether it was a delusion or the truth. Just seeing the two of us talk for a moment, he would have concluded that I intended to marry you for your wealth.”
“Seriously? He made some judgment and spread rumours based on just that?”
If it had been made up out of malice, she wouldn’t be this angry.
Ezkhiel explained calmly to the furious Letticia.
“In an old noble family, if a non-heir child wants to maintain a noble life, they must either secure a distinguished career or marry a wealthy spouse. He likely didn’t want to believe I had remarkable talents, so he thought I was targeting a woman from rich family… Even to the extent of thinking that about a 13-year-old lady like you.”
Ezkhiel spoke his mind plainly, his expression turning to one of disgust.
Realizing anew how despicable Barthset was, Letticia clicked her tongue.
‘I have to avoid more than just the fathers who obsessed with his daughters and obsessive male leads from the original story.’
The world is vast, and there are many crazy and useless people, so there are bound to be assholes who keep popping up even if they are not mentioned in the original story.
As she was reflecting on this, Ezkhiel continued.
“And, actually, I was just keeping the evidence. The real people to thank are those who had the courage to entrust it to me.”
“What are you talking about? If you hadn’t taken charge of that, my big brother would have struggled even more to gather all the evidence! Moreover, the fact that the victims came to you with the evidence shows how much they trusted you, doesn’t it?”
Letticia rebutted, but Ezkhiel still denied it.
“I was the only one in the public administration who could have any contact with His Highness the Crown Prince. So there was no other choice.”
Ezkhiel seemed to sincerely believe this. Normally, it would be unusual for someone to easily entrust such important evidence.
“Anyway, you took care of all evidence from the victims. You were planning to report it to His Highness the Crown Prince when the opportunity arose, weren’t you?”
“That is… true, but…”
“You gave my big brother the evidence when the opportunity arose, and thanks to that, the victims were saved, and that scoundrel was expelled from his house, bringing justice. You did very well! It was perfectly resolved thanks to you!”
When Letticia clapped her hands and cheered, Ezkhiel blushed and lowered his head, feeling embarrassed.
His attitude was vastly different from the children of the Count Sharon house, who always made sure to claim their credit.
“…You really are Lenard’s sister. You say the same things.”
“It’s a bit annoying to be compared to my big brother, but if we both think the same, will you believe it now?”
Ezkhiel hesitated but nodded slightly. Satisfied, Letticia smiled and said,
“Still, please don’t think that the only reason I want to spend time with you is that I see you as a benefactor. I’m not someone who meets people I don’t have feelings for.”
“Ah… I understand. I will be careful not to have any misunderstandings about that part.”
Ezkhiel nodded with a determined expression.
She was about to ask if he really understood, but Ezkhiel looked at his watch and put down his utensils, cutting off the conversation.
“It looks like it’s time to go. I enjoyed the meal, Lady. Thank you for helping me choose the jewelry.”
“Oh… yes. I enjoyed it too, sir.”
Letticia couldn’t hold him back any longer and stood up with him. If she did, Ezkhiel might have to work overtime today as well.
“If you’re still busy, I probably won’t see you at social gatherings for a while. When do you think you’ll be free?”
“I’ll be busy until the end of March. But I think I can attend the ball hosted by Countess Freke.”
Letticia was disappointed by Ezkhiel’s answer. She would have to wait at least three weeks.
However, she couldn’t force a busy person to meet, so she had to delay meeting Ezkhiel for a while.
‘Still, it was pleasant and enjoyable to be with him today. It was nice when he stepped in to protect me…’
Although she didn’t feel uneasy with the guards around, it was different seeing a favorable person trying to protect her.
Thinking she wanted to see a different side of him next time, Letticia decided to look forward to their next meeting.
“Then, I’ll have to wait until the ball to see you again. It’s a shame.”
“Since you say that, I will look forward to seeing you at the ball as well.”
“Really? Then you won’t let me be a wallflower when we meet at the ball, will you?”
“…Of course not.”
Ezkhiel didn’t ask how a diamond like Letticia could ever be a wallflower.
He seemed to take it as mere courtesy.
“Oh my, you don’t seem to believe me. I meant it sincerely.”
“Yes?”
Ezkhiel looked startled at Letticia’s words.
Worried that she might seem too teasing, Letticia slightly turned to cover her face.
“As you saw in the capital, it’s not just gentlemen who are present. Wouldn’t it be reassuring to have someone you know?”
“Oh… yes. That’s true.”
Ezkhiel’s expression softened slightly, as if he took it as a request to help her if she found herself in a difficult situation again.
Constantly denying gratitude and thinking he’s unpopular with women seemed to be true, as Lenard had said.
Letticia decided to be satisfied with this for now and stepped back.
Aaahh they’re so cute and real!!! I loved this chapter so much! So easy to believe happening in real life. He’s a little frustrating at times, but I understand him, because many times I think/act similarly to him. Letty is being patient and gentle with him, a very smart woman! And I love how his masculine/protective side comes out when he’s with her. He’s such a nice man. Truly a breath of fresh air! 😌🥰💖💚
That’s right! I can also understand Ezkhiel’s attitude, plus he has not had the confidence to deal with women since long ago. I wonder if his lack of confidence has been there since he was a kid or if it’s because someone teased him or bullied him.
The part they were making their order… left me very hungry 🥲 Luckily for me I actually have a soup at home and can easily make a sandwich! Unfortunately for me I don’t have that assortment of delicious sweets available 😭 I’m a sweet tooth
I’m sorry for rarely commenting louyve, but I’m always eagerly awaiting for your next post and enjoy reading it so much! Now my life has calmed down a lot and I’ll have more time and disposition to actually come and comment, showing my gratitude for your hard work.
