“To be honest, it’s true! I know exactly how much of a front you put on when you come out, and knowing that, I can’t introduce you to my friend, my conscience can’t accept it!”

“That can’t be called making a front, but I did maintain good manners when I came out! And how can a brother not only fail to help his younger sister who wants to try dating, but also ruin her chance? Where’s your sense of responsibility as a family?”

“Is responsibility for my family the only responsibility I have? I have to be loyal to my friends too!”

“So you’re saying your friend is more important than your sister?”

“This time, yes, it’s my friend!”

Fortunately, the siblings’ tussle and argument didn’t last long, thanks to both of them being tired from working late.

Seeing that Letticia was still fuming, Lenard decided to bring up something he hadn’t mentioned before, looking reluctant to do so.

“Sigh… I didn’t mention this before, but do you remember when Ralph Barthset dropped out five years ago?”

“Why bring up that idiot now?”

Letticia snapped back, recalling the loser who spread false rumors about her and then faced ruin.

Lenard continued, reminiscing about that time.

“You know I submitted evidence of Barthset’s corruption to His Highness, right? Thanks to that, His Highness personally investigated, and all of Barthset’s crimes were exposed, leading to him losing his position as the chief aide and being expelled from his family.”

“Yeah, so what?”

“…All that evidence, Ezkhiel gave it to me.”

Letticia was shocked by this unexpected revelation.

Ezkhiel had provided the crucial evidence that led to Ralph Barthset’s downfall?

“Ezkhiel gave you that? Are you serious?”

“How else would I, a business major, gather such evidence from public administration students, enough to send to His Highness in just a few days?”

Lenard was right.

At the time, they were so focused on Barthset’s dropout and Matthias’s involvement that they didn’t think much about it. But Lenard had less than a week to gather all that evidence.

Finding all the victims of Barthset’s grade theft and persuading them to provide evidence would have been impossible, even with the help of Kenneth and Marianne’s connections.

“How did you get it from Ezkhiel? You weren’t that close back then.”

“When you want to bring someone down, you first go to their biggest enemy.”

“And that was Ezkhiel? He doesn’t seem like someone who would openly make enemies.”

Even though she’d only met Ezkhiel twice, Letticia had never seen him speak ill of anyone, not even Barthset. He always tried to stay neutral and avoid bad-mouthing others.

“Ezkhiel might not have liked making enemies, but Barthset was very wary of him. He was so incompetent that he feared Ezkhiel would replace him. Of course, he pretended to be superior, but that was just to hide his insecurity.”

“That’s typical small-minded behavior.”

Letticia scowled in disgust, and Lenard nodded in agreement.

“Even if Ezkhiel didn’t gather the evidence himself, I figured some of Barthset’s victims might have gone to him. So I visited him, and he had the evidence all prepared. It was a windfall.”

“And Ezkhiel just handed it over to you?”

“Yes. When I told him Barthset was spreading false rumors about you, he gave it to me right away, saying he couldn’t let you suffer because of someone tied to him, and hoped it would help resolve the issue.”

Letticia stared at Lenard, speechless for a moment.

If this was true, Ezkhiel had been crucial in saving her from a major crisis.

The Averil family might have had less influence in the capital and could publicly apologize due to the incident becoming too big to ignore, but the Barthset family was different.

As the son of the Minister of Internal Affairs and a future chief aide to the Crown Prince, it was rare in this hierarchical society for someone of Barthset’s status to be properly punished.

Considering that even some professors supported Barthset’s misdeeds, they could have easily shifted the blame to another student following him around.

Had that happened, Barthset would have stayed at the academy, continuously slandering and harassing Letticia.

Yet Ezkhiel, who had provided such crucial help, had never even mentioned it.

“He never told me any of this… He’s too kind, isn’t he?”

“He doesn’t like to brag. He’s very humble and considerate.”

Ezkhiel was very different from Letticia and Lenard, who were meticulous about taking credit for their achievements.

Perhaps it was this character trait that made Lenard fond of Ezkhiel and consider him a friend.

“Seriously, don’t hurt him. He already has a low opinion of his popularity with women, and if things go wrong with you, he’ll likely be heartbroken and might withdraw completely. How can I support you two meeting under those circumstances?”

Lenard warned with a much more serious face than before. However, Letticia’s feelings for Ezkhiel only grew stronger after hearing this.

“He seems like a really good person, and if other women aren’t interested yet, that’s perfect! I definitely have to meet him.”

“Hey!”

“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt him. You know I’m not the type to play with men’s feelings.”

“Even if you try your best, Ezkhiel might still get hurt if things don’t work out between you two. Especially since he knows you’re my sister, he’ll be even more considerate and accommodating.”

“Then I’ll be considerate and accommodating to him too. Problem solved.”

“You? Yeah, right.”

“You jerk!”

The two continued to argue for a while but finally reached a partial compromise.

Since Letticia had already made a promise to Ezkhiel, they agreed to set up the shopping appointment. However, if Ezkhiel seemed uncomfortable or uninterested, Letticia would not pursue him further.

After reaching this conclusion, Lenard was plagued for two days by his sister’s pestering, writing a letter to his friend and receiving a reply.

He couldn’t help but feel guilty about introducing his good friend to his troublesome sister.

“By the way, Letty, was there really no other guy at the ball who caught your interest? You must have met several partners.”

At Lenard’s question, Letticia’s face contorted with displeasure.

“There was a carriage and horse enthusiast, a guy who kept babbling about how he was blinded by my beauty, a scoundrel trying to block my prospects, a braggart boasting only about his wealth, and an idiot who praised Aner Jewelry in front of the daughter of the owner of Sharon Jewelry.”

“Wait, what? Someone praised Aner Jewelry to you?”

“Yeah. His name is Count Holdsworth, a scholar studying theology.”

Upon hearing the name, Lenard repeated it to himself a few times as if to remember it, realizing how foolish the act was.

“And I also met the Averil siblings.”

“Oh, those two. I’ve seen them at the gentlemen’s club, but I didn’t expect them to attend the ball.”

Lenard’s reaction was surprisingly indifferent. Despite past conflicts, Lenard believed that if things were resolved properly, there was no reason to hold a grudge.

Seeing this, Letticia recalled the unresolved suspicion of sudden character changes concerning Achilles.

‘…Should I ask my brother?’

Lenard might be able to objectively evaluate the current state of the Averil family.

Letticia decided to steer the conversation towards the Averils without changing the subject.

“I danced the quadrille with Lord Averil and exchanged a few pleasantries. Lord Averil mentioned Lady Averil passed the civil service exam, and for the Duke he said he would be coming to the capital in the fall.”

“So Lady Averil will debut in the fall. Just in case, tell her to visit Sharon Jewelry if you run into her.”

“Lady Averil? Lord Averil said she wouldn’t debut.”

“Technically, he might not want her to debut, but there won’t be any other path for her.”

Lenard spoke with certainty that Ariette would debut in the fall. Unlike Letticia, who knew the original story, Lenard seemed very sure about Ariette’s future.

“What do you mean there’s no other path? She’s working well in the palace after passing the civil service exam.”

“It doesn’t seem like she’s doing well in the palace.”

Lenard answered while cutting his bacon with a knife.

“I asked Ezkhiel, and according to the new officials, Lady Averil doesn’t seem to get along well with others.”
