Camilla was the one who answered the duke’s question.
“Even if the truth is revealed, Letticia will continue to be attacked by this rumor. They’ll continue to stir suspicion without evidence, saying if there’s smoke, there’s fire. Whether it’s true or not, the mere existence of such rumors is fatal to Letticia.”
Letticia also firmly agreed on this point.
Even though the facts haven’t been confirmed, just the emergence of such suspicion changed how other students viewed Letticia.
Even within the Academy, let alone the social circles where people are eager to tarnish reputations, the situation was likely even more intense.
“But if the duke were to offer Letticia a visible form of apology… For example, by presenting that famous Elrey Freesia and expressing hopes for future friendship, how would that appear to people?”
The duke’s eyes hardened at Camilla’s words. Letticia also looked slightly surprised and glanced at her mother.
Elrey Freesia is a freesia that only grows in the Duchy of Averil.
According to the original setting, it was a particularly beautiful flower with a central white and progressively brilliant golden color at the tips of the petals.
It was admired by nobles for its beauty but famously not distributed outside the duke’s garden.
‘In the original, only Ariette and the gardener were allowed to touch it…’
As it was a symbolic flower of Averil to that extent, after Ariette debuted in society, she was called ‘Elrey’s Freesia’ in the original work.
Camilla is now demanding that flower as compensation. Or something equivalent.
“… Does the countess understand the significance of presenting that flower as a gift?”
“You don’t suppose I’m unaware of that famous Elrey Freesia, right.”
“Even knowing that, you still demand it!”
Patrick stepped forward to protect Camilla from the duke’s aggression.
Unfazed by the duke’s intimidation, just like before.
“Rumors, once they start, tend to linger like embers. So, we will stamp out even the sparks of rumors. That’s how we protect our daughter.”
“………..”
“And my wife and I have made it clear. We demand an apology to ‘Letticia,’ not for ‘Count of Sharon.’ The Freesia you send will rightfully belong to Letticia, and we won’t exploit it. This is to protect my daughter’s honor.”
The duke, hearing Patrick’s explanation, seemed to be sizing him up as if for some kind of test.
However, seeing Patrick’s unwavering gaze, he refrained from saying anything further, realizing there was no wavering in Patrick’s eyes.
“…If that helps safeguard the lady’s honor, it shall be sent to the Count’s estate soon.”
The duke, after making that statement, glanced at Letticia, hesitated briefly, then politely spoke up.
“Misunderstandings have caused great inconvenience to you and my sons. As a father, I apologize for this rudeness. And for my personal rudeness as well.”
“…I apologize for my disrespectful behavior, Lady Sharon.”
As the duke stepped forward to apologize, Alexander also struggled to regain composure, slightly bowing his head to Letticia in apology.
The weight of both the duke and his heir bowing their heads in apology was significant.
Though Letticia’s heart wasn’t fully eased, she knew she had to back down at this point. Pushing further would only complicate things for her.
“…Since both the Duke and young’s Averil have apologized so sincerely, I will accept it as well. Your apologies.”
Despite the implication that four apologies were still outstanding, Achilles’s eyes once again reflected a sense of injustice, but it wasn’t Letticia’s concern.
Who was supposed to be angry and cursing in the first place?
“…Lady Sharon, I also want to apologize again. I’m truly sorry.”
Ariette, who had been silent all along, bowed her head once again.
After briefly glancing at the glimmering golden nape of her neck, Letticia sighed inwardly and gently lifted her by the shoulders.
“It’s okay, Lady Averil. It was a misunderstanding, and since you’ve apologized properly, there’s no need to dwell on it anymore.”
“Lady Sharon…”
As Ariette trembled slightly, Letticia quickly released her hand.
She couldn’t continue holding them anxiously, fearing that the two brothers might start accusing Letticia of something again, or worse, resort to violence.
Regardless of Ariette’s true feelings, Letticia really didn’t want to fight with them again.
***
It seemed the adults conversation might continue, but the children had no reason to stay any longer.
Since it was deemed okay to return home today, Letticia boarded the carriage and immediately bombarded Lenard with questions.
“Big brother, who the hell is that bastard from the Department of Public Administration? Who made me out to be such a vile woman to him?”
With Kenneth and Marianne absent, Letticia’s profanity slipped out unchecked. Lenard, not one to be bothered by such things, casually replied.
“Ralph Barthset. Second son of the Barset Duchy.”
“Ralph Barthset? Ah!”
Letticia, suddenly remembering who it was, stomped her foot on the carriage floor. It was an impolite gesture, but she couldn’t contain her frustration.
“Why on earth with that crazy boy?”
“Probably holds a grudge from the first day of school. He was downright nasty. Apparently, he tried to mess with you after you teased Bright, but when it didn’t work out, he resorted to insults.”
“Are there such pathetic losers around? Are they trying to mess with me because they think I’m crazy?”
Rumors spreading about a 17-year-old being insulted by a 13-year-old girl after failing to mess with her? Even third-rate villains from the original story weren’t that pathetic.
“Luckily, the guy spreading the rumors is him, so not many people in the Public Administration Department believe it. It actually made it easier to track him down. Besides, he’s been boasting so much that people take what he says with a grain of salt.”
While it was somewhat fortunate, Letticia’s mood didn’t improve. It was unfair to suffer because of her connection to the original female lead, and now this guy spreading rumors.
‘Isn’t there any way to ruin that guy’s life?’
Letticia had no intention of forgiving the person who had put her in this predicament.
Plus, didn’t Lenard say? If someone mess with Count of Sharon’s people, you’ll see what happens.
“Big brother, what are we going to do about those two troublemakers and Barthset?”
In response to Letticia’s question, Lenard answered calmly.
“Force them to publicly apologize and make them compensate for the damage.”
“So, to what extent?”
It seemed that a simple apology and punishment wouldn’t appease Letticia’s heart.
Thanks to those who fearlessly mocked her, Letticia’s future debut in society was ruined. She almost ended up being associated with a noble family and living quietly in the countryside, which would have been the best possible outcome.
“Those troublemakers should serve as examples, even involving their families. Didn’t Father mention contacting both families?”
“What will happens if we involve their families? Bankruptcy?”
“…If it done well, it could come to that.”
Lenard, momentarily calculating in his mind, delivered a ruthless response without much emotion. The unexpected answer momentarily made Letticia forget her anger and feel bewildered.
“Come to bankruptcy? If it done well?”
“If they, as minor nobles, tried to cling to the neutral of Averil Duchy, economically, it wouldn’t be favorable. They’d likely be burdened with debts, and to compensate us, they’d have to sell their estate and titles. If they have some territory in the provinces, they might manage to deal with the rest of the debt somehow. But they probably won’t compensate us with their territory.”
The reality Lenard described was so cold that Letticia had never even considered it. Of course, she didn’t feel sympathy, but the idea of having to sell the estate and titles due to compensation was somewhat shocking.
“Losing the family due to poorly educating the children is like this, huh?”
“Even involving Count of Sharon and the Duke of Averil, their position is actually quite fragile.”
“Fragile? Is it always this ruthless among noble families?”
“Of course. Moreover, judging from their attitude, it seems like they’re on the brink of ruin, clinging only to their pride. If they’ve failed to properly educate their children, they should bear the responsibility.”
“Well, they say children’s mistakes are the mistakes of those who raised them.”
Letticia also acknowledged the need for proper education.
Despite receiving apologies and ensuring they face consequences, being openly insulted like a commoner still infuriated Letticia.
“As for Barthset, well… of course, you’ll receive compensation from the duchy, and you’ll see to it that he faces some consequences, perhaps even expulsion. More precisely, he’ll likely withdraw voluntarily.”
“Withdraw? Big brother, what are you planning?”
Hearing Lenard casually mention forcing the son of a Duke to withdraw left Letticia feeling puzzled and uneasy.
Despite Count of Sharon’s close ties with the royal family, how could they possibly force the son of a Duke, even one who produced an Internal Affairs Minister, to withdraw?
“Well, there are reasons. I’ll tell you later after everything settles.”
Lenard decided to withhold his answer for now. Still, promising to explain later was typical of him.
“Anyway, when we get back, eat whatever you want. You’ve been through a lot today, just watching that scene earlier.”
“Why are you suddenly so caring? Did seeing me suffer make you realize how precious your little sister is?”
“Stop teasing me. It’s not like that. Just imagine how tired you must be.”
Lenard seemed annoyed, as if recalling a conversation that couldn’t reach a conclusion. It seemed he had completely washed his hands from the problem with Averil Duchy.
“Seriously, it ended as soon as Lady Averil arrived. If only she had come a bit earlier, why was she so late?”
“You saw the knight following behind, right? Lady Averil probably saw him holding someone back and forced herself to come out.”
“Such a hassle, really.”
To think the esteemed Duchy would resort to such tricks just to avoid their daughter attending an inquiry.
Once again, Letticia vowed not to get involved with a bunch of doting family like the Averil’s.
