Letticia felt so proud of herself for not grabbing Alexander by the collar right now that she felt like she might go crazy.

But her parents didn’t seem particularly excited, as if they had anticipated this.

“As you said, there’s no proof that Letticia actually harassed Lady Averil. It’s just that Lady Averil arrived at school in a distressed state one morning, and those two, having seen her, speculated and concocted rumors that Letticia was responsible, which spread. Young lord Averil came to the Department of Liberal Arts to confirm this, just to make sure of it.”

Patrick calmly summarized, but the Duke retorted with an irritated voice.

“In the end, you just repeating what  has said earlier. The only addition is that these two meddling busybodies exaggerated the rumor, but it’s not like there wasn’t a rumor to begin with. Why waste time on this at all?”

“If I do not resolve all suspicions here, even if lady Averil is punished, I will not be able to restore my daughter’s reputation, which was tarnished by the lady’s careless actions.”

“Are you intending to blame everything on those two easy targets? Indeed, that’s quite a manly move from a man who turned the people into enemies of the Marquess Wade by saying that would marry the Ruby of society. It seems like the drama earlier was just setting the stage for that, right?”

It seemed that the duke suspected Patrick of trying to make it appear as if Sophia and Josephine spread false rumors about Letticia to save her.

It’s probably incomprehensible to most why he’s suddenly being suspected of manipulating the situation when all he’s doing is revealing the truth.

“I understand what you’re imagining, duke, but my husband is not that foolish. Haphazardly covering up the truth only leads to it rotting underneath and eventually being exposed.”

“So aren’t you trying to cover it up meticulously by aligning yourself with my family? But you got the wrong person. We have no intention of compromising on Arie’s issue. Should I remind you once again that such negotiations will only inflame my anger?”

“We’re not trying to cover anything up. We’re just revealing the truth.”

“It would be to create the truth that the Count Sharon family wants.”

Patrick seemed to reach the limit of his patience with the Duke’s unyielding attitude. After closing his eyes momentarily and taking a deep breath, Patrick spoke as if he had made a decision.

“Duke, since you refuse to believe that Letticia didn’t harass Lady Averil without evidence, and we can’t admit that Letticia harassed her without evidence, it seems pointless to continue repeating stories that lead to no conclusion. Perhaps we have no choice but to proceed with a trial.”

The mention of another trial caught the attention of the principal.

“Count, a trial like that…”

The professors also looked uneasy, watching Patrick’s reaction.

If the incident at the academy escalates to a lawsuit, it would be greatly detrimental to the academy. In addition to the nobles’ outcry about not being able to mediate such trivial matters.

However, the duke’s trio maintained a nonchalant expression. It was a different reaction from when they allowed Aria to be brought in earlier.

“This is just a small talk, but I don’t think Elrey’s wheat harvest this year will be like last year.”

The Duke spoke with a tone that seemed like he was making small talk. However, the content was far from light-hearted.

“If you were to report this matter to His Majesty, it would likely cause quite a bit of concern. As a loyal subject, it wouldn’t be desirable to burden His Majesty with such tedious matters as a trial between two families. You wouldn’t want to risk losing even the favor you have gained from the Empress.”

The words were beyond comprehension for Letticia, to the point where she felt like her sanity might escape altogether.

‘Is this lunatic going to threaten the emperor with food?!’

Where else in the world would you find a duke resorting to such tactics, threatening over food because of a mere squabble between children?

‘This is exactly why I didn’t want to get involved with these people… Why is my life like this….’

While Letticia was internally contemplating her life, the adults weren’t staying silent.

Patrick let out a short, hollow laugh, while Camilla gracefully shot a mocking smile.

“Even if it’s understandable to predict the upcoming strawberry harvest, don’t we usually not harvest Elrey wheat until summer? Predicting the production quantity already, truly fitting for Duke Averil, who takes responsibility for our empire’s dining table. Your insight is truly remarkable.”

“I take it as a compliment. So, what are you going to do?”

“…There are a total of three places importing strawberries produced in Elrey.”

Patrick, who had been briefly staring at the ceiling, adjusted his posture and looked the Duke straight in the eye.

His gaze contained a sense of resignation and disillusionment, as if looking at a fool who could not be saved.

“I heard that there are three places handling strawberries from Elrey mounth: Fragna Farm, Beskar Farm, and Dalton Farm. Among them, Fragna Farm is the largest trader.”

“Indeed.”

“I quite like strawberries myself, but the only downside is they don’t last long. I’ve heard that even a slight delay in distribution often leads to significant losses for distributors.”

“What’s your point?”

Patrick stared back at the Duke with a steely expression as he spoke.

“While wheat may be the largest source of income for duke Averil, isn’t it true that in the spring, strawberry sales help cover some of the expenses? But if by any chance there’s a delay in distribution causing the strawberries to spoil, then Elrey’s wheat harvest will need to be increased to make up for it.”

Letticia was also taken aback by the bold declaration and glanced at Patrick in surprise.

Facing a food threat with a distribution threat. But is that something Count Sharon can do?

“Hah, when did Count Sharon ever focus on fruit distribution?”

“We all have relationships. Erskin’s student who came to testify earlier is the daughter of a Fragna High Noble, and we have relationships with Beskar High Nobles, Dalton High Nobles, and so on, because the bonds that new nobles have during their time at the Academy tend to continue after they graduate.”

“They’re giving up Elrey strawberries just because of that little connection? Aren’t you overconfident in that power?”

“Would I tell them not to distribute Elrey strawberries without any investigation?”

For the first time, Patrick showed a hint of a smirk in response to the Duke’s mockery.

“It’s impossible for the Duke to find replacements for those three distributors. Fragna, Beskar, and Dalton are the only ones capable of transporting the vast quantity of strawberries produced in the Duchy within two days. Moreover, if they were to drop out, it would be out of the question for wheat distribution to continue smoothly.”

The Duke raised an eyebrow slightly at Patrick’s words, but his lack of denial suggested that it was indeed true.

“So, what would happen if I asked all of the three top strawberry distribution decision-making authorities to postpone the distribution of Mt. Elrey strawberries for just a few days, and also pointed out the points I just mentioned before?”

“…….!”

It is of course impossible to go to a situation where there is no distribution, since it would mean that we would all die together.

However, it is possible for the three distributors to collaborate behind the scenes and change the costs or purchase prices involved in distribution.

While it may be difficult for the three distributors, who typically compete with each other, to cooperate, Patrick was suggesting that he could facilitate such cooperation.

“That would be illegal collusion, wouldn’t it? Are you boldly declaring that you’ll engage in bribery right now, count?”

“As a third party, I only spoke assuming a contingency situation. As the decision-maker, it is nothing compared to the Duke, who said he would skyrocket the price of wheat.”

Alexander seemed to want to retort but couldn’t find a rebuttal, letting out a frustrated sigh instead.

Knowing he would be outmatched in this conversation, Achilles remained silent.

The only one who still seemed undeterred was the Duke, who appeared poised to say something, but Patrick, now controlling the conversation, showed no signs of relinquishing the initiative.

“Of course, no one wants the Duke Averil family, which is responsible for the table of the people of the empire, to collapse. What I said earlier is only a what-if situation.”

Patrick intentionally cut in, and then Camilla stepped forward.

“So, please demonstrate the wisdom not to escalate children’s quarrels into adult conflicts. After all, this situation didn’t need to escalate to this extent in the first place.”

“If the truth is clearly revealed, then of course it will be possible.”

“As long as you’re ready to accept the truth, anything is possible.”

Ultimately, they were back at square one.

With Duke Averil demanding impossible proof already having reached a conclusion, and Count Sharon refusing to accept it.

‘When is this going to end…’

Just when Letticia couldn’t bear the continuing conversation any longer, the door to the principal’s office swung open vigorously.

Finally, Ariette, whom they had been waiting for, appeared.

“Sorry for being late! I’ve come to give my testimony!”

Ariette seemed to have come in a hurry as her hair was slightly disheveled. Behind her followed the assistant who had left earlier and a young man whose face Letticia didn’t recognize, both looking embarrassed.

“Arie!”

“Arie, why aren’t you in your room? Sir Galet, what on earth were you doing!”

“Please don’t scold Galet. I insisted on coming out.”

The Duke’s face flushed red and purple at Ariette’s words.

The fate of the knight was already forming in his mind, but the voices of Alexander and Achilles drowned out that picture.

“Arie, go back to your room. You’re only making it harder on yourself. We’ll take care of everything, so don’t worry.”

“Exactly! Why would a fragile girl like you come out of your room! I’ll take you back, so let’s go quickly!”

“No, where are you going? You came here to testify, so of course you should stay!”

Letticia rebelled against the two people who stood up and covered Ariette.

Hearing her voice, Ariette pushed her brothers aside and approached Letticia, bowing her head.

“Lady Sharon, I’m truly sorry for what happened this time!”

It was a statement that completely derailed the theatrics being played out by her father and brothers.

Did their fathers fail to be a father, but their mothers didn’t teach them anything either? Poor Ariette😮‍💨

    1. louyve says:

I can’t even imagine how they behaved when the duchess was alive… But maybe they’d be a bit sane since the duchess is still alive and then they’d just stay in their own circle in Elrey’s territory. Ariette was unfortunate to be surrounded by people like them…. 🫂

  2. Nira says:

    YESS FINALLYYYYY.
Honestly, this trial is pretty fun. we get to see how people with power and social dynamics keep each other in check – not just for active members but for the upcoming (young ones) too.

    1. louyve says:

I would also like to see how Josephine and Sophia’s family will respond to the slander about Letticia, I don’t think they can avoid the trial for spreading baseless rumors.

  3. Cathe says:

Awn I read too fast 🥺 Now we’ll wait for next month’s conclusion of this matter (I suppose and hope so). Finally Ariette/the said victim arrived 🙄
I really enjoyed Letty’s father, Patrick. I can see how he was able to be where he is and achieve what he has. Calm, savage, smart, wise and intelligent. Their altercations were super insightful 💯

    1. louyve says:

Yesss, no wonder Letty’s mom who known as Ruby of society fall and married him cause all of that 😆😆😆

  4. Ava says:
