According to the setting of the original work, Duchess Averil, that is, Ariette’s mother, was a merchant’s daughter who did not even receive a title at the time.

At the time of Duke Averil’s proposal, they had just risen to the status of minor nobility, and it was only after marriage that they received the title of Baron through the influence of the Duke’s family, completing their social status.

‘The social circles would have welcomed her so warmly, knowing that she came from such a background.’

However, I couldn’t immediately bring up this matter. If Ariette were to cry upon hearing this, it would be annoying, but discussing the duchess’s story was even more of a burden for the three child of the duke.

Letticia had to find a way to convey the information without causing unnecessary discomfort.

“I heard that the late Duchess wasn’t a noble when she got married. Therefore, it’s natural that her standing wasn’t favorable in the capital’s social circles. In the past, the position of new nobility might have been even lower than it is now.”

“Is lineage that important? Even for a Duchess?”

“It seems so. That’s what I’ve heard, at least.”

Ariette seemed profoundly shocked by Letticia’s words, encountering a reality unheard of in the world of Duke Averil.

“Because of that, it would be awkward for me if the Lady wanted to join our gathering. Since I initiated and lead the group, there might be situations where I have to yield the position to the Lady.”

“Why would you have to yield? If I say Sharon Lady should continue as the leader, wouldn’t that be fine?”

“If I continue to be the leader, others will see that Lady Averil has come under me. In other words, others will see that Duchess Averil has bowed down to Countess Sharon. Are you really okay with that?”

With Letticia’s final words, Ariette found herself unable to persist any longer. It’s a different story when it’s just her, but when the honor of the family is at stake, the situation becomes much more complex.

“If you want to study etiquette further, talk to the professors. As for those two, let them handle it. That’s about the extent of advice I can offer.”

“… Yes. And I’ll apologize for Lady Hillmarin and Lady Kairon.”

“It’s not an issue Lady Averil needs to apologize for regarding those two. Anyway, take care.”

After finishing her tea, Letticia stood up, bid her farewell, and left the room.

The maids who were seeing her off had fierce glares, but Letticia met their gaze with a questioning look, making them quickly avert their eyes.

‘It’s tough, really.’

Back in her room, Letticia lay on her bed, letting out a sigh.

In novels where the protagonist is transmigrated, they usually become one of two things: either a helper for the original heroine or an antagonist causing conflict.

If they become an antagonist, even if they lack malice, their minds might be like a flower garden, or they might be hiding a dark secret. In the worst case, another transmigrator might have taken over their body, pretending to be the original.

For Letticia, she disliked dealing with variables, so she hoped these three would stay away. However, since it’s still early in the story, judging the situation wasn’t straightforward.

‘It’s better to have allies than enemies, but I don’t want to deal with people burning down buildings to make things easier for their little sister.’

To learn more about Ariette, it would be best to get closer. However, if her family is as doting as in the original, just being on good terms with Ariette might attract unwanted attention from her family.

While background checks were common among nobles, given the Duke’s persistence and influential network, Letticia might need to prove she’s beyond suspicion, facing the risk of extensive investigation.

Weighing the potential benefits and troubles of being close to Ariette, Letticia sighed, bobbing her head slightly.

Ariette’s circumstances were unfortunate, but they were separate from Letticia’s own considerations.

‘In the original story, things managed to work out somehow, even without me. Well, Matthias did become a bit of an obsessive stalker after meeting Ariette, but she still received him well.’

In romance novels, the power of love is practically an all-purpose key. What problem in a romance novel can’t be solved by love? Whether it’s the trauma of the male lead or the past wounds of the female lead, with each other, they can overcome and live happily.

Therefore, there’s no need to play the role of a counselor or a savior without reason, unless Letticia takes the other’s place.

At this moment, she believed the issue was resolved.

The next morning, when Letticia entered the classroom, she found herself in an extremely awkward situation.

“Oh my, Lady Averil!”

“What on earth happened? Why are your eyes so swollen?”

“Did Lady Sharon do something unthinkable?”

With puffy eyes as if trying to advertise that she cried all night, Ariette sat down, and around her, Josephine and Sofia were making a fuss.

The other students either looked puzzled or interested as they observed Letticia and Ariette.

“No, it has nothing to do with Lady Sharon. It’s my problem.”

“No way! You returned to the dormitory with Lady Sharon yesterday!”

“Really, it’s not! If you respect me, believe that it’s not me. Will you please stop? Can’t you trust what I’m saying?”

When Ariettae firmly expressed her anger, Sofia and Josephine fell silent for the moment, but they didn’t seem convinced. Instead, their eyes were focused on Letticia, showing disbelief.

‘What did I do, seriously.’

Was refusing to let her join the group such a heinous crime? Was this world a universe where everything the heroine wanted must happen, and any opposition led to certain doom?

‘If that’s the case, I’ll burn down a temple or something.’

Religion doesn’t wield immense influence in this world, but if there were gods, wouldn’t they come out and listen if someone set fire to a temple and demanded an audience?

As Letticia rambled in her mind, Dayna approached hurriedly and asked.

“Letticia, what on earth happened? What do you mean she went back with Lady Averil?”

“Well… Lady Averil expressed her interest in joining our group. So, we decided to give her a day of experience. I were invited to her room, had tea together, and then decided to pretend nothing happened.”

“Lady Averil wants to join our group…?”

Dayna looked bewildered, and Dolores wore an embarrassed expression.

However, some of the new nobles seemed excited, rather than puzzled.

“Isn’t that a good thing? Having the daughter of a duke in our group is a big deal. Why did you refuse?”

“Good? What’s so good about it!”

Ivonne retorted against the optimistic student. It seemed she, too, understood the implications of such a situation.

“If Lady Averil joins our group, Lady Sharon will be pushed out. Having the daughter of a duke over the daughter of a count as the leader of our group, do you think those stuck-up aristocrats obsessed with lineage will tolerate it? We’ll become prey to those high-ranking nobles who emphasize class and bloodline!”

“Why would it be prey? If Lady Averil concedes, then it should be fine.”

“That’s when the one with the lower status concedes, not the higher one. If it happens the other way around, it’s truly an absurdity. If Lady Sharon doesn’t gracefully concede, she’ll face criticism for not yielding even when someone of higher rank is present.”

The irony was that while Ariette made concessions, Letticia was the one receiving the blame.

She feels like lashing out, wondering why they came and sparked such unnecessary tension.

But what’s done is done, and what matters most is that Ariette cried.

‘Those damn brothers won’t stay quiet.’

Letticia’s head began to throb increasingly.

She couldn’t predict when those bastards who could make tears flow from his sister’s eyes would strike.

Such trials were unnecessary.

“Alright, everyone take your seats. Let’s begin the class.”

Just then, as the professor entered, the students all took their seats.

Although it felt like their eyes briefly met with Ariette, Letticia didn’t want to look at her any longer, so she pretended to read her book and lowered her head.

And it came.

After all classes ended in the afternoon, just as Letticia was about to tidy up her books.

The classroom door creaked open loudly, and screams from female students filled the air.

“Wait a moment!”

“This is a liberal arts classroom! Male students are not permitted to enter-”

“Step aside.”

The low growl was incredibly ominous.

With a shiver running down her spine, Letticia quietly raised her head and met the menacing gaze directed her way.

‘Ah, he finally came!’

A silver-haired, sturdy male student wearing the symbolic green tie of the Knight Department.

It was undoubtedly Ariette’s brother, Achilles Averil.

Moreover, he approached with a fierce glare, like he had entered a mode of madness.

“Oh, oh big brother! This is the liberal arts classroom! Boys aren’t supposed to come in…”

Ariette, who was sitting inside the classroom, stood up in surprise. As soon as he heard Ariette’s voice, the stern look softened, resembling a mild puppy.

“… Don’t worry too much, Arie. I’ll just take care of something quickly and leave.”

“Take care of something…?”

The intimidating demeanor of the mad dog that had transformed into a giant in front of his younger sister quickly turned into a menacing glare as he approached Letticia. Each step he took carried a tremendous weight.

“Hey, Letticia Sharon.”

“… If you’re going to address someone, at least attach the title ‘Lady’ before it, Young Lord Achilles Averil.”

Letticia stood up from her seat, holding in her hand the 450-page hardcover book ‘Fundamentals of Imperial History of Ponteon,’ the thickest book she owned, and glared at him in protest at the rude title.

No matter how much you are the duke’s son, calling the count’s daughter without an honorific is not only rude, but it is also pointless even if you get pointed at.

“Respect should be observed with someone worthy of it. Why bother with respect when dealing with you?”
