Lenard’s room, where he had come after writing the family reunion application, was as spacious and luxurious as Letticia’s. Wondering if all the new girl’s dormitories were this nice, it seemed more likely that the Sharon Count assigned them to particularly good ones.
“What brings you here? Has something happened already?”
As Lenard, placing a cup from the dormitory servant onto the table, asked with a puzzled expression, Letticia felt annoyed at the look that seemed to be sizing up some troublemaker.
“Oh, am I someone who causes trouble everywhere? It’s not like that.”
“Then, did you come because you were bored?”
“Kind of. But Kenneth is not in the dormitory, so I just thought I’d drop by and see my big brother.”
“Kenneth went out to meet a friend. He’ll probably eat outside and come back for dinner tonight.”
“Kenneth? I thought he’d just stick to the dormitory.”
“He has a friend with a wide circle, so on the first day, he’s taking Kenneth out no matter what. It’s fortunate that he’s going out, even if it’s forced.”
Lenard seemed to view this positively, considering the twin’s lack of sociability compared to other siblings.
However, those words meant that Kenneth would spend all his energy there today, making it clear he wouldn’t have time to play with Letticia.
“It can’t be helped then. You’ll have to entertain me, big brother.”
“I’m busy today. I need to plan my schedule for meeting other people.”
“Then entertain me while planning. Can’t you manage that much?”
“Hey.”
Lenard did criticize Letticia, but he didn’t kick her out.
Seated comfortably in his room, Letticia, disregarding whatever Lenard might say, began recounting the events of the day as she remembered them.
“It was really tough for me to come here. There were no-entry signs everywhere, so I had to take detours and ended up getting lost. I even went all the way to the political science department.”
“Political science department? That’s quite far from here.”
“Exactly. If it weren’t for the person who guided me, I wouldn’t have made it here. He said he’s Ezkhiel Bright. Remember him, Brother? You worked on a collaborative project together.”
“Ezkhiel Bright? I know.”
Upon hearing the name, Lenard seemed to recall him immediately.
“We worked on a collaborative project together last year. He was my companion in enduring the worst project ever.”
“The worst project ever?”
“Yeah. When it comes to group projects, there are more than a couple of guys you’d want to kill, but that time was truly hell. We were a group of five, and among us, the only one in decent shape was Lord Bright.”
“Wow…”
At that moment, Letticia genuinely sympathized with Lenard. Having more than half of the group as villains, she would have wanted to throw them away.
“One guy was consistently late, not paying attention in meetings, only complaining when asked to focus, and showing dissatisfaction internally. We ended up kicking him out. Another one was asked to research and came back with a few sentences, forgetting even the sources. Eventually, Lord Bright did most of the work for that guy’s part.”
As Lenard reminisced about that time, his expression unusually revealed deep frustration.
Considering Lenard’s personality, which values order in tasks, having someone ramble during meetings would have likely exhausted most of his patience. If that person couldn’t even fulfill their responsibilities, it would probably have driven Lenard to the brink.
“But the last guy did something truly unthinkable. Three days before the presentation, he suddenly confesses that his mother is sick, and he couldn’t do anything. Then, out of the blue, he appears just after we’ve worked all night to create the materials for the presentation. Shamelessly, he claims that we stole everything from him and lied to the professor.”
“Are there really such crazy people?”
Letticia couldn’t believe it either, so she let out a bitter laugh. Truly an all-time villain.
“Fortunately, I had gathered all the evidence, and thanks to Lord Bright’s meticulous meeting notes, the professors believed us. Turns out, the story about his mother being sick was a complete lie. I really wanted to bury him when I heard that.”
“Should have buried him socially.”
Even if you don’t want to do it yourself, there are ways to ruin someone socially. Where do you find a mother for such an act?
Moreover, attempting to intercept the credit for work after doing nothing – there’s a limit to shamelessness.
Lenard seemed to share the same sentiment, smiling as he spoke.
“You think I would’ve just stood there? That guy eventually dropped out of the academy.”
“Dropped out? That happened?”
Surprised, Letticia asked, and Lenard casually replied.
“Turns out, he was a repeat offender. Unfortunately for him, his social standing was a bit high, so he managed to take credit for the work of other group members until then. But after presenting the evidence to the professors and spreading some rumors, his mother, who had been bragging about her son’s good grades, was completely embarrassed.”
“So, he dropped out because of that? Is it that big of a deal?”
“That guy was in the Department of Public Administration. His parents had been actively appealing to a prestigious noble family for him to work there after graduation. All of that got canceled. Besides, with the rumors spreading in academic circles, there was no way he could find a decent job even if he graduated. So, he ended up dropping out and returned to his estate. Probably helping out with family matters while living there. Achieving success was out of the question.”
Truly, it was a lesson in real education.
Letticia decided to highly evaluate Ezkhiel, who had always spoken positively and had never shared such stories.
“Lord Bright never mentioned any of these things.”
“Well, he’s not the type to gossip. I complained a bit on purpose, he casually agreed, and that was the end of it. Rather than that, he quickly changed the subject to working.”
“Wow, he’s a really good person. Or maybe he has incredible patience.”
In response to Letticia’s words, Lenard nodded, indicating agreement.
“It seems like the Prince really made a good choice in scouting him. If the other party wasn’t the Prince, I might have suggested it myself.”
“Does he evaluate him that highly? Seems like he’s really good at his job.”
“Much better. He’s way better than that incompetent Barthset guy who excels only in grades but can’t do dirty work.”
The way Lenard spoke indicated that the incompetence of Bart was quite well-known.
An individual like him being Matthias’s chief aide—Matthias didn’t seem like someone who would keep such a person close by.
‘Wait, was the aide mentioned in the original work that guy?’
Letticia hurriedly sifted through her memories. While her memory wasn’t exceptionally good, the knowledge from the original work tended to linger in her mind.
‘… I’m not sure. There was a scene where Matthias left, saying he was going to see Ariette.’
She couldn’t recall the aide’s name, but there was a description of her trying to stop the bewildered prince, who failed and Matthias left without a word.
“Your Highness, isn’t this your office?”
“There’s no place you can’t enter when you are by my side. And this is my office, you don’t need to worry about propriety.”
Creak—
As soon as he said that, the sound of the door opening echoed. It was the aide, entering with arms full of documents.
The aide, mistiming the situation, opened the door at the wrong moment.
“Your Highness—”
The moment he tried to speak, Matthias’s gaze returned, icy as ever.
Urged by the instinct of self-preservation in the face of that commanding look, the aide silently closed the door.
Spending three days in the palace, burning the midnight oil to summarize reports from various departments, he could have been quicker if he had known the lady was coming.
‘My after-work…‘
Matthias needed to receive this quickly to finish work for the day, but it seemed like today was going to be another late night.
‘… Just this trash of a guy.’
Concluding her reminiscence, Letticia further diminished Matthias’s evaluation, from an obsessive stalker to an oppressive boss.
‘You should let people leave work. And how can you call your lover during work?’
Regardless of who would become the Chief Aide, seeing that situation, Letticia thought it might be better if it were not Ezkhiel but that other guy, the one named Bart… something.
As she remembered this thought, Letticia unintentionally revealed what she hadn’t said aloud.
“Oh, by the way, big brother. I had a little dispute earlier. Is that okay?”
“What? You just started school today, and you’re already getting into trouble?”
Startled, Lenard stood up abruptly. Despite his immediate readiness to intervene, Letticia casually recounted what had happened.
“That Bart guy, was it? He picked a fight with Lord Bright and tried to get me involved as well, even asking a young girl like me. So, I just pointed out to everyone that he was trying to become the househusband by seducing the Lord. That’s why people came to support me.”
“Ah, that guy….”
Lenard seemed to understand the situation just from hearing the name. Instead of being surprised, his attitude conveyed more of an exasperated feeling.
“If you’re against that guy, people will be on your side. He’s famous for just spouting nonsense.”
“Oh, is it okay? I deliberately spoke loudly so others could hear.”
“That’s even better. No matter how incompetent and foolish that guy is, he can’t mess with the darling of the esteemed family whom the Empress cherishes, especially a girl much younger than himself.”
It seems Letticia is out of harm’s way now. Now, what remains is Ezkhiel…
“Then, isn’t there a possibility he might vent his anger on Lord Bright? I’m a bit worried about that.”
“Considering he found the guy at fault, there might be a chance.”
“Ugh… I feel so sorry for Lord Bright.”
Despite Ezkhiel saying he’s fine, the thought lingered that he might bear responsibility for escalating the situation through retaliation.
Lenard shrugged in response to her thoughts.
“If you act too harshly, Prince might intervene. He values competence, and he actually dislikes people like that Bart fellow, high in status but lacking ability.”
“How does big brother know that?”
“Did you forget that we’re in the same year as the Prince? Such rumors spread like wildfire.”
Living without hearing rumors about the Crown Prince seemed impossible, even if they were in different faculties.
Regardless, it’s fortunate that there doesn’t seem to be any cause for concern.
“Well, that’s enough. big brother, I need to head back, so please escort me.”
“Why do you always need an escort?”
The layout here is different from the map. I can’t find my way. Help me.”
“Ugh… Fine. Let’s go.”
Lenard, as if resigning to the inevitable, left the room with his younger sister.
The first day of school, filled with chatter and incidents even before formal classes began, came to an end with a slight lingering sense of unease.
