Chapter 38:

“Look at me.”

“……”

Leticia didn’t turn her head. If she met his eyes now, she felt like she would really be eaten alive. She wanted to escape like this. Every time the blue waves surged, she felt like she was being dragged by claws, and she couldn’t breathe again.

“Did you really want to play around with other guys like that? Seems like you’re really not satisfied.”

At Arden’s words, muttered as if sighing, Leticia turned her head.

“Now I understand.”

How you look at me.

With those words, Arden wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her towards him.

She didn’t like his golden hair shining even in the dark room. Why does he still shine?

Her own black hair was engulfed in darkness, not even emitting any light. In contrast to her figure writhing in despair, anger surged as if contrasting with it.

Why only me, why always me.

Unfairness turned into anger, resentment turned into hatred. Emotions deeply buried spread their roots further and gnawed at her even more. His firm hand gripping her hair, his wide chest touching hers.

The golden hair swayed in the wind and fell onto her face. As the distance between them narrowed, her heart was fleeing far away.

Further away, far enough that he couldn’t catch her.

She wanted to hide it deep in her heart.

“Your Highness… You’re… pitiful.”

“What…?”

“Not being able to see into someone else’s heart, it’s pitiful and sad.”

Ha.

His beautiful face contorted in a pleasing manner. She continued without pause. The waves crashed against the rocks, must keep them from reaching me anymore.

“What good does it do to have it like that?”

……

A distant gaze once again met hers. Perhaps they would both fall together like this. Descend endlessly into the abyss, until they blinded each other. They might torment each other until they couldn’t breathe.

“It’s just a facade.”

She still took in Arden’s face, so beautiful it made her eyes sting. She thrust a sharp fragment into her heart that had shattered for him.

“If you want it so badly, take it. Even if it’s just a facade.”

I’ll give it to you anytime.

She had already given her body once; there was nothing she wouldn’t give. If it meant carving wounds into his heart like this, she could do even more.

Leticia rested her hand on his neck and kissed him. This must be what he wanted. She wanted to humiliate Arden, to show him what disgrace felt like, to crumple so much you wanted to die.

He accepted her kiss. Saliva mixed between their parted lips as they exchanged breaths. Their still unyielding pupils stared at each other relentlessly. Love was absent in their entangled gazes.

His blue eyes remained tranquil, unwavering. Yet, they stared directly into her icy golden eyes. A stark contrast like the blue sky against the scorching sun.

They were both burning like on a hot summer day. Not with the same emotions, but with opposite ones. Yet, the meaning inherent in their gaze was clear.

You can’t even properly have a facade.

She was making it clear to him. That it was not anyone else who had caused her to change like this, but Arden Levrter himself. It was all his doing.

Cadius burst into laughter in the deserted garden. “Amusing, truly amusing.” He had swayed as if he would fall when he was being affectionate, but now he didn’t even glance. He felt a strange satisfaction in Leticia’s changed behavior. Even when the moonlight seeped into her hair, casting a subtle glow, and her golden eyes, tightly shut but not avoiding his gaze, were adorable.

“Your Highness, a messenger has arrived. They say they’ve found about two of them.”

“Two of them?”

A shadow fell on his happy face. The unfulfilled thirst surged again, making his throat dry. There was no one else who could fulfill him as much as Leticia did, even if he captured them.

“Find them all. Ah, Elosha? It would be even better if you find that woman.” If they found Leticia’s mother, the High Elf, it would be easy to put that noble woman in his hands. The more beautiful the flower, the sooner it should be plucked and preserved in its pristine form before it withered.

If the Duke hadn’t changed his mind in the first place, things would have flowed smoothly.

“Did you find out why the Imperial Marshal is here? It feels suspicious to call it the Queen’s blessing.”

“We already have people looking into it.”

“I have a bad feeling about it. The Pope is such a sly person, always spinning plots…”

It’s all so annoying, but I can’t kill him either.

His red eyes eventually turned towards the direction where she stayed. He raised his head to look at the terrace, but the lights were off. As if refreshing his taste, he licked his red lips with his tongue and eventually turned towards his room.

Clack.

The door closed. Leticia closed her eyes.

“What’s the harm in having even just a facade, right?”

Laced with his acerbic criticism, Leticia found words to say. So she smiled as if it didn’t matter.

Yet, he didn’t embrace her. Despite the inconsistencies, Leticia felt relieved.

Wiping her lips with the back of her hand, still feeling the lingering sensation of the kiss with Arden, she saw his expression wasn’t pleasant as she had expected.

“Talking as if it’s never the right time. Even those desperate to have even just a facade can’t have it, what’s left?”

He reached out and touched her hair. The warmth gathered at his fingertips, transmitting fully. Her frozen heart wavered as if it would melt at his touch.

“Oh, you were already mine.”

At his voice, as if realizing something, she bit her lip hard. A sharp pain filled her red lips with blood. His hand lightly brushed her lips.

“Open your mouth, don’t bite. You’ll hurt yourself.”

“…Why does it matter?”

“Telling me to have even just a facade. Does anyone like it when their possession gets blemished?!”

She clenched her fists at his sarcastic tone.

She lightly pushed his hand away. Suppressed emotions surged once again. She wanted to scream at him and slap his cheek right now, but she couldn’t.

He would use that as an opportunity to control her again.

She didn’t want to play along anymore.

“Fine.”

Leticia released her grip, which she had clenched tightly while biting down on it, and opened her mouth. Arden, displeased by her docile attitude, made an unpleasant expression.

“So dignified. Doesn’t suit you.”

“Wasn’t this what you wanted?”

“I thought you’d resist.”

She smiled slyly as she gazed into his shimmering blue eyes. A strange satisfaction surged in her at his annoyed expression. If she could scratch his nerves like this, even in this way.

They still hadn’t taken their eyes off each other. Leticia laughed softly, sensing desire in his gaze directed at her.

As always, she expected his hand to delve into her clothes, but he only removed her arms wrapped around his neck, without taking any further action.

It was she who was taken aback by his unexpected action. The blue flames seemed to quiet down as if they had never been there. Even the glint in his eyes, which sparkled as if with interest, vanished.

As the waves, which always seemed ready to engulf her at any moment, receded, all that was left was a sense of emptiness.

“I feel… bad….”

Why was she the one getting hurt?

Leticia closed her eyes and held her breath. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her throat tightening. Her vision became dizzy once again.

Turning her body, she buried her face in the pillow and tightly gripped the blanket. She couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down.

The more she resisted him, the more she crumbled. He remained steadfast, while she continued to weaken in front of him.

All she could do was try to ignore the emotions welling up inside her.
