I Played the Role of the Adopted Daughter Too Well

Hera, the 4th princess asked.

“Why did you insult me?”

A tingling sensation was felt from Hera sitting in her wheelchair. The feeling was a little different from what Vicen emitted. If Vicen had the flesh of an untamed wildcat or leopard, she had the flesh of a viper hiding poison in her molars.

“You seem to have received my letter, sister.”

The content of the note itself was nothing special.

[I want to get along with my sister.]

Saying ‘let’s be friendly’ was close to an insult. Because Hera couldn’t walk.

When Bellato said to stay close, they meant to be their opponent.

Viola turned her body and then she smiled brightly.

“I didn’t insult my sister.”

“Are you saying the intent of this note was not an insult?”

“If she had thought that way, I don’t think my sister would have come looking for me.”

If she had only taken it as a real insult, she wouldn’t have come here. She would have defined it as a potential enemy. It was fortunate though. No matter what the process was, Hera came to visit her after all.

Han Arin, who was a reader, knew it well.

‘She has a crush on me.’

She knew everything by looking at the early part of the original book. Shortly after the welcome dinner, Hera develops a crush on Viola. She reaches out to be her ally, but she is kicked out by Viola.

‘You will still have a crush on me. So sister, I will invest. Please hit the upper limit! I love you, my stock.’

She organized an encounter with Hera. This part was also a part that Han Arin personally thought a lot of regret. Suddenly, she remembered the regrets she had when she was a reader. Viola recalled the contents of the original.

Hera gave up being the family head. Instead, Hera decided to help her become the head of the house.

She had some physical limitations, so she did not want to become a Duke herself. She made contact with her siblings while hiding her sharp claws. So she could judge and decide for herself who she would raise as the successor and who she would hold hands with.

Constantly testing and supporting her siblings. In a sense, she was also the most demanding sibling. In the novel, the duke even said:

⌠The child chosen by Hera will be the successor, oh, madam. That child cannot be king herself, but she is a child who can raise a king.⌡

But Viola hated Hera. That was Viola’s mistake in the beginning.

Han Arin made another promise. Never do that. The moment Viola and Hera become enemies, all life would be devastated. She would have to worry about the back of her head every moment, and her whole life would become a series of crises.

Viola was a pervert who enjoyed it, but Han Arin was not.

“I was sincere, and if you felt insulted, I would apologize. Because I don’t know Bellato well yet.”

“You don’t know?”

Hera laughed once, seemingly absurd. A kid who didn’t know Bellato did that at the welcome dinner?

Viola asked.

“Why is my sister here?”

“Is it the duty of an older sister to check the face of her youngest child?”

“Okay?”

Viola walked towards Hera without hesitation. As she sat in her wheelchair, her eyes met Hera’s.

Viola, with her short stature, could make eye contact with Hera without having to bend her back.

“Then check my face.”

She brought her face closer enough for her noses to almost meet.

“You can check it if you want.”

“…”

Hera was a little taken aback. Her face was too close. She could feel her breath.

⌠At the welcome dinner, Hera felt a strange feeling. It was a good feeling that came from admiration.

‘Could I have done that if I had been in that position?’

A feeble admiration started from there. Because she couldn’t have done that.⌡

What Hera herself lacked, Viola had. Brilliant self-confidence that cannot be intimidated by anyone. An arrogant gaze, as if born with the fate of a predator. Hera felt those things at the welcome dinner.

It was the same even now.

Viola felt a strange composure. She’s obviously a younger sister, but she felt like the older sister.

‘I can’t have that by imitating or acting.’

It must have been some kind of talent that only those born with it could have. Hera was so misunderstood.

Viola met her eyes and continued her words.

“I don’t know much about Bellato yet.”

“Let’s say yes.”

“But I know one thing. A place where if you can’t prove Bellato’s qualifications, you’ll be weeded out.”

“I understand.”

Viola put her finger on Hera’s shoulder. Hera circled slowly, round her. She also played Bellato, so she’s more natural now.

“When I first saw the family tree. I thought it was weird. How can a lame princess survive here?”

Hera was twelve years old. A child older that ten was also outside the law of being protected. Bellatu’s blood relatives choose their own careers at the age of 10 and begin growing up as successor candidates. When you’re twelve, it’s time to do your part.

“There is no official record of the performance of the mission. How did this older sister grow up as Bellato for two years? I’ve been thinking about that.”

Viola smiled.

Did her sister like smart people?

‘I’m smart!’

“If you don’t mind, will you listen to me, sister?”

* * *

The reason why princess Hera, who had both her legs broken, was able to survive here was well know by Arin.

She was a growing character by choosing her career path at the age of ten as ‘White Bellato’.

“They say you often stop by our father’s study even when you’re not on an assignment.”

“You did a pretty detailed investigation.”

“Huh. The butler is competent.”

…She had seen it all in books.

“So. What do you want to say?”

“To be able to survive here with that body. I wondered if that would mean that you had some special ability that I didn’t know about.”

This was the bespoke approach Viola chose.

Hera looked at Viola.

Coincidentally, Viola was passing in front of Hera. She saw Viola in her profile.

Her purple hair fluttered.

“There is an older brother right above me who is insane.”

“Vicen?”

“Huh. I thought about why that brother wouldn’t run up to you.”

This was because the Duke of Heron gave the order directly. Do not touch Hera.

“No matter how much I think about it, the only way to interpret it is that our father gave the order himself. I think our father ordered the rest to never touch my sister.”

That’s for sure. She had read all of the novels.

“You’re right. My father ordered that.”

“You mean that, you did that to all of your siblings?”

Hera did not deny it. It was all right.

“My father is a rational man. He couldn’t have done that for no reason.”

“So, maybe you have a special ability? So you want to be friends? You don’t even know what it is?”

Viola stopped. Like a villain in a novel, she whispered in Hera’s ear.

“Huh. No?”

Hera’s body trembled. She could feel the ghost in her voice.

It sounded like a blood-crazed ghost whispering. Viola intended to be a beauty in her own way, but in reality she became a ghost. She, of course, had no idea she would be recognized so far as she was a Viola. She just did her job hard.

The important thing now was to have Hera on her side. Viola points out the facts she saw in her novel.

“My sister doesn’t want to be a Duke.”

“…”

“Isn’t what my sister want to be a King Maker?”

Hera narrowed her eyes.

‘I’ve never expressed myself in front of my siblings…’

It’s true that she was thinking about that, but she never showed it outwardly. Not her older sisters or brothers had discovered it but a seven years old girl did. That was not something a child who had only been in the house for about 10 days could understand.

‘It’s fun.’

She’s the new sister. She decided to have a talk with Viola. Could she really be the child she could choose? How accurate her father’s eyes must be.

Was this longing she had justified? Wasn’t it like a fantasy that she had for this child? Hera shrugged her shoulders and met Viola’s eyes. Viola almost flinched at the moment.

‘This sister also has her eyes revived.’

It became bright.

‘Let’s have a slaughter competition!’

It was very similar to Vicen’s lively appearance. Han Arin knew why Hera’s eyes came to life.

‘She wants to seriously test me.’

Then she should pass the test well.

“I’ve never once said that with my own mouth.”

“I know.”

“But are you sure?”

“Because I’m sure.”

“How?”

She saw it as a novel.

“Your sister is smart.”

“Okay. Regardless of that.”

“You know very well that a person who has directly received our father’s protection can never become the head of a household. Because that is an expedient.”

“I guess so.”

“Then why would a smart person take on our father’s protection?”

“Did I do it myself? Are you responsible for that?”

“I have met my father twice.”

One fact was pointed out.

“He’s not that sensitive.”

Although that was the charm of her favorite character. But Viola swallowed the words.

“Did someone not so delicate step forward and tell us not to touch our smart 4th Princess?”

Viola continued to recite the contents of the novel. As if she reasoned and deduced it all herself.

“My father is not delicate, but he is reasonable.”

“What do you want to say?”

“The smart sister volunteered to ask for his asylum, and the reasonable father granted the request.”

Hera’s eyes began to shine more.

“Keep talking.”

“You have no intention of becoming the head of the household, and instead, I will become the head of the family, and you would have volunteered to help by my side.”

In the original story, Viola ignored Hera because of it.

“My father and sister must have made a deal. My older sister gave up her position as head of the household in exchange for obtaining his asylum. At the same time, it must have been a deal that she would not become the head of the family, and she would definitely support this and work hard for the prosperity of Bellato.”

“In Bellato, people who perform this role are called ‘White Bellato,’ right?”

“That’s right. We call it White Bellato.”

“Okay. Growing up as a white Bellato. That would have been the best choice for my disabled sister. It was a smart and sensible decision.”

Viola was sincere. When she was a reader, she obviously admired it. This deal was made when Hera was 10 years old. Duke Heron liked the 4th princess Hera, who offered him this deal at the age of ten, and he accepted Hera’s offer.

Viola shrugged her shoulders.

“I’m serious. I think my big sister is a true Bellato.”

She couldn’t be a murderer like Vicen. Instead she did her best she could. As a reader, han Arin knew that fact very well.

“You said I was like Bellato?”

“Because you did the best you could. I respect that.”

“…”

“I’m serious.”

Hera felt a strange feeling. It’s the first time she had heard that she was like Bellato.

‘… respect.’

A very unexpected word came from Viola. A coward protected by his father. Because she was crippled, she was not even the target of competition. A half Bellato who couldn’t become the black Bellato that symbolized the real Bellato, and instead chose a white Bellato who hid and used her mind…

She was the one who said that she was like Bellato. Furthermore, among her siblings, Viola was the first to say that she respected her.

Hera laughed.

She looked at Viola with curious eyes and said,

“You.”

Viola felt hot inside. There was something sharp in her eyes. She said something meaningful.

“Putting on a mask that doesn’t suit you and acting. Aren’t you frustrated?”

Thud!

It felt like her heart was sinking.
