Chapter 151

***

Kyle and Brody, having left Clock Rabbit Village, headed west in search of a land they could call their own—toward the plains at the western edge of the Asgar continent.

As they traversed the snow-covered mountainous terrain, their eyes gleamed with curiosity for the land ahead and a fierce determination to claim it as their territory.

…Of course, not everyone in the group shared the same sense of purpose.

“Wahaha! Snow! It’s all snow, everywhere!”

Kyle and Brody shook their heads as they watched the Oswald twins roll and romp around in the snow like fish in water.

“They’re going to wear themselves out already,” Kyle muttered.

“Leave them be. They need to burn off some energy. That way, they’ll shut up and just follow along.”

Brody replied with a chuckle, though a hint of concern flickered across her face.

After all, once they exhausted themselves, they would need to replenish that energy with food. Even though they had packed plenty of preserved meat, it was meant to be emergency rations.

The further west we go, the fewer animals there’ll be to hunt…

The only hope Brody had was a story from her father about settlers who had once traveled west, bringing livestock with them.

Most had abandoned their animals when they returned. If those livestock had survived and reproduced in the wilderness, they might provide a much-needed food source for the group.

Brody could only pray that her father’s words would turn out to be true.

As she closed her eyes for a brief moment, pretending to pray, a small snowball suddenly plopped onto her head.

No… actually, it had been snowing on just her and Kyle for a while now.

When they finally looked up in irritation, they saw a crow hopping from branch to branch, deliberately knocking down clumps of snow onto them.

Kyle’s eyes flashed with annoyance.

“Hey, get down here.”

Kernels, the crow, flapped his wings smugly as he continued to shower them with snow.

“No way. I’m a skilled scout. A scout belongs in the sky, not on the ground.”

“I don’t need a scout. Get down.”

Kernels was about to protest again when something below suddenly caught his eye.

His dark eyes glinted mischievously.

“You don’t need a scout? Well, you’ll need one for hunting.”

His tone had taken on an infuriatingly smug edge.

Kyle, sensing something was up, raised his head, and Kernels finally revealed the information he had been withholding.

“There’s a reindeer at ten o’clock.”

The words snapped not only Kyle to attention but also the twins trailing behind him.

And sure enough, there, at the base of the hill, a gray-furred reindeer was grazing on the needles of a conifer tree.

The wolves’ blue eyes sharpened instantly.

The wolf who had just declared scouts unnecessary had vanished replaced by a predator fully consumed by the thrill of the hunt.

Kyle immediately handed Brody over to Kernels before turning to the twins.

“Oswald, Oswin. I’ll drive it from behind. You two block its escape from the sides.”

“Yes, boss!”

It had been a while since their last hunt, and the wolves were eager.

From the sky, Brody clung to Kernels’ feet as she watched them circle the reindeer. After rolling through the snow to blend in, they crept closer, stalking their prey.

The reindeer remained oblivious, too focused on its meal to notice the danger closing in.

Then, in an instant, the three wolves sprang to their feet and charged down the hill.

Startled too late, the reindeer bolted in a desperate attempt to escape.

The chase was on.

Brody and Kernels followed from the air, watching as the wolves pursued their prey through the snowy landscape.

As Brody marveled at the sensation of flying, she instinctively glanced back toward the ridge they had come from and her expression stiffened.

There, just beyond the crest of the hill, she saw white wolves darting into hiding.

What…?

At first, she thought she had imagined it. But when she looked again, she could clearly see wolf heads peeking out from behind the snow, as if they had been trailing the group.

They weren’t adults—they were children.

There were four of them.

Brody’s mind immediately went to the morning’s events.

There were four wolf pups among the group that attacked the village. But we let them go. They weren’t a threat.

She recalled Kyle’s words from earlier.

‘I let them go. They weren’t the type to come back for another attack.’

Brody frowned.

Could they be the same wolves? But… if so, why are they following us?

She barely had time to think before she found herself descending.

Below, the wolves had already finished their hunt and were skinning the reindeer.

Kernels dropped Brody onto the ground, but before she could even celebrate their successful hunt, she rushed to Kyle.

“Kyle!”

She gestured toward the ridge, lowering her voice.

“Look over there. I think we’re being followed by wolves.”

“Wolves?”

Kyle and the twins immediately turned their gaze to where she was pointing.

Sure enough, their eyes soon spotted the white-furred pups peeking over the ridge.

It was the same children from the morning.

The pups flinched when they met five pairs of sharp eyes, instinctively recoiling.

But, realizing they had no way out, they hesitantly crawled forward, looking small and timid.

Then, the four young wolves ran down toward Kyle and his group.

Kyle watched as they approached and, keeping his expression cold, asked,

“Why are you following us?”

Huddled together as if protecting one another, the young wolves hesitated under Kyle’s intimidating presence.

“Well… since our leader died… we don’t know where to go…”

Even though they were technically adults, 1It seems that they are teenages, so they could be considered adults in some people’s eyes.they had always followed the pack leader without question. Now that he was gone, they were lost.

Kyle’s gaze darkened.

Seeing them scared yet clinging to the only thing they had left—following him—felt heavier than expected.

Normally, he wouldn’t have thought much of it. But perhaps seeing how the man earlier had used children as shields had made him realize the kind of harsh environment these kids had grown up in.

“Can we at least follow you until we reach a village…?” one of them pleaded.

But since they had no idea where Kyle’s group was headed, he responded firmly.

“There’s no village where we’re going. We’re heading to the western mountain range.”

“The west? But why…?”

The young wolves blinked in confusion, wondering why anyone would willingly go to a place where nothing existed.

The Oswald twins smirked and chimed in arrogantly.

“We’re heading to the unknown land at the western edge, you little rookies.”

“Is there food there?”

“Food? There’s even grass in the summer.”

“Really?!”

The mention of food immediately caught the young wolves’ attention. They forgot their fear and rushed forward, eyes shining.

“Then can we come with you? We’ll just follow along, we won’t be a bother!”

“We’re good at hunting! We can catch squirrels and weasels for you!”

As the twins scoffed and laughed saying, “We don’t eat that junk, we eat reindeer!” Kyle exchanged a glance with Brody.

Their thoughts were the same.

Realizing this, Kyle finally spoke.

“The journey is tough. It’ll take months, and there will be more days without food than with it.”

It was a challenge. A chance for them to back out.

The young wolves met Kyle’s gaze.

He had spared them when they were caught stealing. More than that, he had killed their cruel leader.

That alone was enough for them to trust him.

“That’s fine. We’re good at starving.”

They answered proudly.

Kyle felt a bitter pang at those words but kept his expression cold.

“Then follow us. Whether you give up halfway or not, that’s on you. We’re not responsible for you.”

It was a harsh response, but permission nonetheless.

The young wolves cheered and finally relaxed, rubbing against each other in relief.

“Are we seriously taking these rookies with us?” Oswald grumbled.

“They’re just extra baggage…”

“Yeah, we’re barely taking care of ourselves as it is.”

Kernels muttered, nodding in agreement as the twins gnawed on reindeer meat.

But Kyle ignored them.

All he saw was Brody’s approving smile.

Then, he turned to the twins.

“Stop eating and come here.”

“Huh? Why?”

They looked up, blood smeared around their mouths, but Kyle simply gestured toward the reindeer meat and said to the young wolves.

“Go eat.”

“C-Can we really?”

The young wolves’ eyes widened in disbelief.

Meanwhile, the twins protested loudly.

“What?! You said you wouldn’t take responsibility for them! So why are you feeding them?!”

“Just share. You stuffed yourselves before we left.”

Unlike the young wolves, who had abandoned their stolen prey and fled earlier, the twins had eaten their fill.

Kyle had no reason to let the kids starve.

He ignored his grumbling subordinates and walked over to Brody, sitting down beside her.

She smiled and ruffled his fur with her paw. A quiet understanding passed between them, and both of them smiled.

After everyone—newcomers included—had eaten, Kyle and Brody led the group westward.

Their adventure had begun again.

Seven wolves, a rabbit, and a crow.

An odd combination at first glance, but as they marched toward their unknown future, they looked more than fitting for the journey ahead.

Exactly one year later, they finally arrived at the western plains. By then, their group had grown, as drifters wandering the mountains had joined Kyle’s ranks.

But their journey didn’t end there.

Unlike the frigid eastern lands, the western plains stretched southward with vast forests and a mild climate making it an abundant land.

And, naturally, it was already home to other tribes. The battle for territory awaited them.

Kyle led his people into a long war, and after ten years, they conquered the western plains.

He named the land he had claimed after his wife, Brody May. Thus, it became known as Main’s Plains.
