Chapter 6: The Cat Visitor
Lin Ning didn’t notice the uninvited guest immediately when he woke up the next day.
He’d underestimated the future people’s interest in food. When the System goaded him into checking the System Panel, Lin Ning was stunned. His Faith had reached fifty thousand something, and it was still rising. Only then did he finally realize that the future was a great time to be alive in.
In an era scarce of food, the possibilities of insufficiency were limitless. The world didn’t have vegetation, had very little sources of meat, and ingredients were virtually non-existent, but he had two aces up his sleeve — the System and his powers, and that was all he needed.
He finally had enough Faith to do all the things he wanted. Now wasn’t the time yet, though. Lin Ning had to clear his name first and reveal the truth behind everything that happened all those years ago before he could finally begin spreading the good word of his food properly without tainting his name. Besides, he needed to get his powers acknowledged and approved by the country, too. He couldn’t raise suspicion with his powers in the meantime, and definitely couldn’t get tangled up in the country’s affairs if he wanted to keep his job.
He still had to wait for the right moment. But, come to think of it, it’d be a good idea for him to train his powers a little. So he bought a few flower pots from the System’s Market and planted some purchased seeds in them though he’d never gardened before and had no idea what he was doing. It was one thing to plant them with care, but actually making the seeds grow was a whole other problem.
[System, can I use my powers to make them grow?] Lin Ning stared at the black, fluffy soil, feeling that he still had a long way to go.
[Yes. Try grasping the soil lightly with your palm, host. Channel your powers through the soil, into the seeds. If you do this everyday, the seeds’ growth speed should increase as well as reach medicinal status,] the System explained.
Lin Ning followed as he was instructed. A soft green glow swelled out of his palms. Soon, he was done treating the entire row of flower pots. A breeze blew past him and he yawned. It was only then when he realized that he hadn’t closed the windows the night before.
Huh. Time to eat.
“Meow—”
Lin Ning jumped, startled by the cat’s voice. He turned around and saw a huge Siberian cat crouched between two of the pots, staring curiously at him. Lin Ning looked at it, and the cat looked back. As if realizing that it had no idea who he was, the cat swayed its tail haughtily, then sat on the floor, its fluffy tail curling around its two front paws. It blinked at Lin Ning sternly, and Lin Ning thought he was going to die from cuteness.
The kitty from yesterday…!!!
Lin Ning’s jaw dropped. He glanced at the window, then back at the cat. Someone could’ve stuffed a whole egg into his mouth with how wide it was open.
“It’s you, Kitty! Wow, you’re like Spiderman! How did you climb over here?”
Lin Ning was a cat person. In his previous life, his father hated anything with fur, so pets were naturally banned from the house. In this present life, the first thing Lin Ning ran into upon entering this new world was a probably ownerless and poor baby kitty cat, and he felt his heart shattering into pieces for the poor thing. This feeling of heartache completely overshadowed the fact that kitties weren’t even supposed to exist in a place like this. He was relieved, though. Luckily, it was a cat that caught him pulling flower pots out of nowhere, not a human.
Judging from the way its forehead creased and how the temperature around it seemed to plummet, the cat must’ve hated being called “Kitty”. Lin Ning had never met such a fun kitty before. He had to adopt it. He went to fetch his medical kit, then plopped onto the floor, stretching his hands out towards the animal.
“How about I put on some medicine for you?” Lin Ning smiled and waved the kit in his hand. Technology now was advanced — some flesh wounds could even be dealt at home. But, it looked like the kitty before him wouldn’t trust him, and probably wouldn’t listen to him or might even run away, so he figured he’d wait for the kitty to get more comfortable around him before sending it over to a vet.
“I won’t take you to the hospital. When we’re done with the ointment, I’ll feed you something delicious!” Lin Ning coaxed. “I can get you some anchovies, or canned fish, or cat food, or fish guts…”
The cat had no idea what the human was saying, but it also didn’t want to look stupid, so it stalked over to him. This human was holding some kind of medical thing, his movements slow and gentle. It decided he was harmless.
Up close, the kitty was way larger than Lin Ning imagined. As expected of a warrior tribe cat. It was probably three times larger than a regular cat, and the soft, fluffy fur on its body was a few layers thicker than usual.
Lin Ning opened the medical kit, beginning to do first aid for the cat. Slivers of his power — remnants from his earlier experiment — seeped out his palms, emitting a soft green glow.
Lin Ning didn’t notice this, but the cat — with its sharp eyes — did. The glow had a much better effect on its wounds than the medicine he used. Connecting the dots to Lin Ning’s odd movements with the flower pots earlier, a wild guess formed in the cat’s mind.
This human it met randomly was a plant-based power user?!
Even though its memory was foggy, and its mind was weary, it was positive that this nation — no, this universe — had no living human with such an ability!
The cat’s body stiffened with the sudden burden of this earth-shaking news, too preoccupied to notice that Lin Ning had long cast his self-control aside and had sunk his grabby hands into its fur.
Aaaah, Lin Ning sighed contentedly. Even though the huge cat looked fierce, it was adorable! Chubby and fluffy, stroking it was like touching a cloud. It felt soooooo good!
Both cat and human became lost in their own worlds. In that moment, they settled into complete harmony in space and time.
“Do you have an owner, Kitty?” Lin Ning mumbled. He checked its neck for an indication of ownership, but found none.
The cat ignored him.
“If you’ve got nowhere to go, you can stay here with me…” He prattled on. “I’m still in debt, though, but I’m hard-working and loving. And I’ll have money too, eventually, so I can take care of you. Oh, right, do you want something yummy? …Oh, no. I’ve never had a cat before. I don’t know how to make cat food…”
“Kitties can’t eat human food… What should I do?” Lin Ning was distressed. He should’ve bought some Nutrient Doses for cats earlier today.
The cat swayed its tail casually. It’d already been eyeing the dishes on Lin Ning’s table, and at this point, was half-expecting it to become all his.
If it could eat those red, aromatic dishes, it might even consider staying over for a while. What’s wrong with eating human food?
