Chapter 4: The Cat and The Debt

Lin Ning drew two lucky viewers from the comments and tagged their usernames in a message. The private messages came flying in quickly with addresses and contacts, their exchange friendly.

Thedeliverymanarrivednotlong after the mealswereprepared.Lin Ningmadesuretodoublecheck before sending the delivery man politelyonhisway. Now,thefuture world could make deliveries as fast as within ten minutes, and their thermal technology was extremely well developed, so Lin Ningdidn’t have anything to worry about.

He sent his message to the three viewers: The food has been delivered, so please be sure to check your front doors.

By the time the delivery man sent the packages to their destinations, he was already hooked by the scent of pork trailing in the air. He couldn’t help but glance at the packages Lin Ning gave him…

Is there food inside? Is there anything on earth that can smell thisgood? If it weren’t for professionalism and protection ofcustomers’rights,he reallywould’vetakenapeekat whatwasinside. But ofcourse,he didn’tdothat.

The delivery man looked at the tag. [Sender: Lemon Kitchen]

So the good-looking guy who opened the door earlier was Lemon Kitchen?

After some thought, he logged into his Interstellar account and looked up “Lemon Kitchen”.

A user named Fat_bunny had started a trending topic after sharing a stream, and following a trail of clues from there, he found Lemon Kitchen’s account.

That handsome and gentle guy with a smile better than a celebrity’s was actually… a cooking streamer?!

The future world was absolutely amazing. HumanslonglefttheEarthand the Milky Way, and Lin Ning nowlived in the current largest habitable exoplanet, which also happened to be the main human-inhabited planet. Itwasafewtimeslargerthan Earth, and with the help of modern technology had landforms and the four seasons.Butevenwithallthis, itwas — at the end of the day — not the same as the Earth of the past.

The main planet had a limit on its number of inhabitants, the other habitable planets were developing quickly, and the nation implemented great macro-control, so even if the main planet attracted the interest of many, it wasn’t as crowded the way metropolitan cities were back on olden Earth.

Lin Ning earned quite a bit of money with his streams, so it wasn’t too heartbreaking for him and his wallet to take a public single-person mini airship. To prevent himself from being spotted by the paparazzi, he slipped on a pair of sunglasses before boarding. After all, he’d never been a celebrity before, and knew very little about the industry, but he figured that the owner of this body was probably a has-been at this point, so there wouldn’t be that many paparazzi after him. Leaving the house was an easy choice to make.

When men get childish, they’re just like children — he’d noticed the airships the moment he left the hospital, but didn’t have the money to board one at the time. Now that he did have the money, it was a necessity that he tried it out. Looking down on an interstellar, busy city from high above felt great — the architecture of the future was wild and weird, full of all kinds of shapes and sizes that made him gasp over and over. Thank goodness the airship driver was a robot, or Lin Ning would’ve been embarrassed of how excited he got throughout the ride.

The only uncanny thing about this new world was the complete lack of plants. He lowered his head and stared at his hands, unsure of how long he’d have to keep his secret.

Going out to have fun brought Lin Ning completely out of his uneasiness. After exploring the world with his own eyes, that feeling of peculiarity that had been bugging him faded significantly.

It wasn’t until night before he started his leisure walk back home. Traffic here was way too well-developed, so not being able to find his way home was the least of his problems.

He was just a few hundred meters away from the house when he passedby an empty street. His guard rose. It was way too quiet here. He lifted his head, looking side to side as nonchalantly as he could, only letting go of the breath he was holding after spotting a security camera not far off.

I probably won’t run into any trouble, right?

Just as the thought came into his mind, he spotted an odd-looking cat collapsed at the side of the street. Lin Ning approached it. The cat had wounds all over its body. He hissed in pain for the poor thing.

The cat, initially unmoving, stuck its ears up immediately and jumped, shooting upwards, glaring at Lin Ning. Its body was covered in long fur, with a thick, warm collar of it circling its neck. Its guard fur was hard but glossy, its down fur thick and firm. But spots of blood decorated the cat’s entire body, and its eyes were piercingly fierce, as if in excruciating pain.

Back before he transmigrated, Lin Ning had once visited a fighting tribe. This cat reminded him of one of the tribe cats — the Siberian cat.

That sort of cat had a larger body size, firm and thick fur, and was adapted to living under harsh and cold environments. It had a strong fighting spirit.

Did the future world also have these kinds of kitties?

Lin Ning had no idea how the cat wound up looking this bad. Was the living environment for little animals in the future world that horrible?

He crouched down and reached his hand out to the cat, smiling gently. “Hey, kitty kitty, c’mere. I won’t hurt you. How about we get you to a hospital?” The body he possessed had a great face — pretty, yet scholarly — and its smile had a way of worming its way into hearts.

The kitty took one look at this smile, flicked its tail coldy, and scurried away into the dark like a meteor shooting across the sky. But it stopped halfway, paused, and turned around to look back at Lin Ning. Lin Ning considered chasing after it, but in a swoosh, the kitty was gone.

“……”

Lin Ning, completely disregarded by the cat, scrunched his eyebrows together, worried. The kitty was severely wounded, yet still so cautious. Forcing itself to push through the pain wasn’t ideal, either.

Lin Ning asked, [System, does the Market sell cat food?]

The System answered faintly, [How can it? Are you dreaming?]

Lin Ning: [……]

The System asked again, [You aren’t planning on keeping it, are you?]

Lin Ning: [I never said that. That’s what you assumed.]

System: [……]

Lin Ning sighed, but then decided it was better to go home first. But as hereached the stairs, he noticed that it was occupied by dangerous-lookingmen. They were crouching on the ground, smoking, but stopped as he came into view. The moment their eyes met, the men approached Lin Ning.

Lin Ning wanted to turn back, but his path was blocked off. There were a total of five of them — he was surrounded.

“Lin Ning?” The man who seemed to be the leader flicked his cigarette, blowing smoke into Lin Ning’s face. The smell was choking.

Lin Ning wanted to yell for security, but it dawned on him that that wasn’t a good idea. The men must’ve chosen to corner him so aggressively because they knew he wouldn’t want to cause a scene. With it being so dark outside, he’d taken off his sunglasses ages ago. If anyone were to look at him directly, they would’ve recognised him. He still wanted to live a quiet life, and had no intention of getting himself exposed.

“You from Feihao?” Lin Ning wanted to confirm their identities. This body was buried in debts, so he had to make a wild guess.

“No, but my bosses from there are rational men who want their payment back — I’m just giving them a hand. Return what is owed, such is the law of Heaven and Earth, am I right? Huh, little superstar?” His tone dripped with sarcasm.

Lin Ning took a deep breath. “I’ll repay them bit by bit. I’ve already sent in the money for this month.”

“Oh yeah? Pfft!” The man pushed Lin Ning, scorning him. “If it weren’t for you — going around killing yourself and getting news about it spreading all around town — we wouldn’t have bothered coming even if you didn’t pay for months.”

“If you had died, even if you were free from us, we could’ve sold your belongings. But you didn’t die, and now we’re stuck with a deadbeat who might not even be able to pay his medical fees. How can we not be here to give you a push?”

“Hahaha, that’s right.”

“You little superstars think you’re so special. With a face so pretty, no one would believe the size of the debt you’re in!”

“Right. First of all, we aren’t here to cause you trouble — we’re just here to remind you. Secondly, if you really can’t return the money, our Mr. Jiang says you can meet with him. It’s not like he won’t help you — for the sake of your past with him, he might help you out.”

The man took a drag on his cigarette, the look in his eyes sharp and vicious. “I’d advise you to soften things up with Mr. Jiang. Enough is enough. Don’t ask for trouble,” he threatened.

Lin Ning retorted, “What’s wrong? Big Boss Jiang ran out of lyrics to write, and now he’s feeling nostalgic for me?”

Some of the men’s faces darkened. One of them surged forward, shoving Lin Ning. Lin Ning was on the ground, his pale face sweating.

They were about to teach him a lesson when a voice rang out, “If you don’t get out of here, I’m calling security!!!”

Lin Ning looked up. A delivery boy drove past on his scooter. Lin Ning didn’t know how long he had been there, but his face was full of an I’m-snitching-on-you look. He looked familiar — Lin Ning realized he was the same delivery boy from earlier this morning.

They didn’t want to start a fight under these circumstances. At the end of the day, they were fine with extortion on behalf of others, but not when it became a problem for them. Besides, the guy employing them specifically instructed them to keep things low key.

“Hmph! You got lucky this time. Pay the money, or prepare for payback!”

The men grumbled, but it seemed that letting him off with a verbal warning was all they could do this time.

Lin Ning listened quietly, and pulled back the coagulating numbing sap in his palm he’d retrieved from a plant with his powers. He sighed a breath of relief, then summoned some itching powder, silently throwing it towards the retreating men.

They kicked him hard. He wasn’t going to let them get away with it that easily.

What he didn’t realize was that in the dark, a camera recorded the entire exchange.
