I Found a Husband When I Picked up the Male Lead

IFHWPUML Chapter 57

“…That is correct.”

Chase, startled by her sudden touch, nodded slightly.

He couldn’t take his eyes off her.

The warmth in her green eyes was so tender that it felt as if they were comforting him.

His heart began to race.

Moments ago, he had been tense, convinced the situation was going downhill, but now he felt an inexplicable sense of peace.

It was as if only he and Wilhazelle existed in the room.

Wanting to feel her warmth more deeply, Chase gently placed his hand over hers, which was resting on the back of his hand.

Then, intertwining their fingers, he threaded his own between her delicate, slender ones, clasping their hands tightly together.

Feeling the shared warmth through their joined hands, he felt a soft, heartwarming sensation spread through his chest.

‘Huh?’

Wilhazelle looked at their intertwined hands.

She wasn’t sure what he was doing at first but soon realized his intention.

‘So, you’re going to start acting seriously?’

Mistaking his gesture as part of the performance, she squeezed his hand more tightly, playing along.

“…”

Rosalind, who had been observing the two act as if they owned the room, had a strange look in her eyes.

Her eyes were sharp, as if she was trying to piece together a mystery.

“Ahem…!”

The Baron, however, looked deeply dissatisfied, clearing his throat loudly.

It was bad enough that his beloved daughter had suddenly announced she wanted to marry someone, but now, to see them holding hands so freely in front of her parents? It was almost too much for him to bear.

“Wilhazelle, could you step out for a moment? I’d like to have a private word with His Grace.”

Rosalind smiled sweetly as she looked at them.

“What? But…”

Wilhazelle couldn’t hide her surprise at the sudden request.

Leaving Chase alone with her parents? The thought worried her. What if he made a mistake during their conversation? She wouldn’t be there to correct it.

“It’s all right.”

Chase was just as startled.

But he reassured her with a calm smile, signaling her not to worry.

“Well… all right then. Please talk.”

Eventually, Lizelle had no choice but to let go of Chase’s hand and stand up.

Chase placed his now-empty hand back on his knee regretfully.

With Wilhazelle gone, only three people remained in the drawing room.

The Baron, the Baroness, and Chase.

Chase could feel the heavy weight of their stares on him, making his back grow uncomfortably warm.

He had never felt this nervous in his entire life.

“Honestly, I was really surprised. The person Lizelle wanted to marry was the Duke of Halos.”

“I understand.”

“If you don’t mind my asking, may I know why you wish to marry Lizelle?”

Though Rosalind spoke with a smile, there was a sharp edge to her tone.

Chase understood why she was being so cautious.

As parents, they wanted to ensure their daughter would have a happy and secure future.

In other words, they were indirectly expressing their doubts about him.

“I have great…”

Chase hesitated for a moment.

He had yet to confess his feelings to Wilhazelle directly. Was it really appropriate to admit them here, in her absence?

Still, he knew that offering excuses or half-truths wouldn’t satisfy her parents.

Nor would it satisfy him.

He decided to face the question head-on.

“I have great affection for the Lady.”

His crimson eyes were firm and unwavering.

His composed posture and confident tone conveyed sincerity.

It was the first time he said out loud that he liked Wilhazelle, and the realization made his ears grow warm.

“…”

The Baron and Baroness stared at Chase blankly at the unexpected answer.

The Baron had never dreamed that Chase would harbor such feelings for his daughter, and Rosalind, who had been somewhat aware of it, was dumbfounded by his straightforward speech.

She had noticed how Chase’s gaze softened whenever he looked at Wilhazelle, making it clear he had feelings for her.

He was looking at her daughter with such love that she couldn’t help but notice.

But she hadn’t expected such a straightforward confession.

“You’re saying you care for Wilhazelle.”

“That’s correct.”

“When did you start to like her?”

The Baron’s question was a bit rude, but Chase didn’t mind. He answered without hesitation.

“At first, I didn’t like her. The rumors about her were terrible.”

The Baron and Baroness silently acknowledged his words.

They couldn’t deny that their daughter had been the subject of many negative rumors due to her extravagance and bad behavior.

“Like everyone else, I judged her based on rumors I heard. My opinion of her was shaped entirely on other peoples’ standards, without any opinions of my own.”

Chase slowly, but without adding or embellishing, explained exactly what he had been feeling.

“But the more I got to know her, the more I experienced, the more I realized that she was different from the rumors. And that I had been looking at her through colored glasses because of my narrow-minded prejudices.”

“I see.”

“She is a sweet, strong and loving person. Unlike me, she has her own strong beliefs that are not swayed by others.”

Chase felt like he could overcome any crisis as long as he had her by his side, holding his hand.

This feeling was so foreign and alien to him that he still couldn’t believe he had been the one to propose marriage.

But he didn’t want to give her up, nor did he regret it.

She came into his black and white world, filling it with color.

She planted trees and grew flowers in his world that was completely charred and dead.

Now, those trees bore lush green leaves and vibrant red fruit, and the flowers bloomed in every color imaginable.

With Wilhazelle rooted in his heart, there was no going back to the way things were.

“When did I start liking her? I don’t know. By the time I realized it, I already did.”

Chase lowered his gaze and smiled faintly.

Image of Wilhazelle in the mansion came to mind naturally.

Her exasperated scowl when she looked at him, her bright laughter, the gentle way she smiled at Raphel.

Even after hearing the rumors about him, she looked straight ahead with clear eyes, saying that it couldn’t be true.

If someone asked what he liked about her, he could give countless answers.

She was the first person who made his heart race, the first person he wanted to share his life with.

Wilhazelle was his first love, the one who brought light to his shadowed world.

“I wish to marry Wilhazelle.”

“…”

“…”

Rosalind and Aiden couldn’t tear their eyes away from him as he spoke.

The usually stoic and cold Duke had a softness to his expression that hadn’t been there before.

It was the face of a man deeply in love.

The Baron’s previously stern expression began to soften.

“I understand your feelings, Your Grace. Thank you for your sincerity.”

“But don’t you think it’s too soon to get married?”

Following Rosalind, the Baron turned to Chase and asked.

Chase had asked himself the same question many times.

But each time, the answer was the same, he never wavered.

“It’s my greed. She is someone that anyone would love, so I want to be by her side as her husband as soon as possible.”

“Oh my”

Rosalind couldn’t hide her delighted smile at his earnest response.

He went so far as to say he cherished her daughter and that she was someone he could not be without.

It was a perfect answer.

“She only accepted my offer, so I hope you won’t be too angry with her.”

“Hoho, this reminds me of the past.”

Rosalind felt nostalgic for the past when she heard Chase’s answer.

She understood his impatience and longing all too well.

The Baron and Baroness also got married despite criticism from those around them that they were being too hasty.

Back then it had only been two months since they had met.

Although everyone said they would regret it, they proved everyone wrong by building a harmonious and loving family.

Who could stop feelings that bloom between a young couple?

“Please take good care of our Lizelle.”

Rosalind smiled kindly.

Their daughter and Chase made such a beautiful pair that even those watching couldn’t help but feel delighted.

The Baron was still reluctant, but he did not protest as vigorously as he had at first.

Now that he understood Chase’s sincerity, he couldn’t bring himself to object so strongly.

Especially since it was what his daughter, Lizelle, wanted.

“Thank you.”

Only then did Chase feel relieved and smile slightly.
