Chapter 28
Edith sat leaning comfortably on the couch, as comfortable as on a bed, while receiving medical treatment.
In truth, she also wanted to somehow resolve her occasional bouts of anemia. She hesitantly responded to the doctor’s questions, glancing briefly at Clyde, whom she suspected might be the culprit for her condition.
After a while, Clyde interjected with a question.
“As you can see, Edith is a beta. But I keep noticing corners that don’t seem beta-like to me.”
The doctor had met Clyde the last time he had a rut cycle. Edith remembered the doctor’s fleeting gray hair and upright demeanor. She was glad for the opportunity to receive treatment from the royal physician.
“What aspects seem non-beta to you?”
“When I was in rut, Edith seemed affected by pheromones. It definitely felt different.”
The doctor listened carefully to the prince’s opinion, nodding with understanding. This was also a point that Edith had secretly doubted.
Along with this, she pondered over Clyde’s behavior over the past few days.
“Your Highness, does that mean you’ve been suspicious of my temperament from the start?”
“I had my doubts, considering how severely you were affected during the rut.”
“Then you should have informed me earlier.”
“I was also skeptical at first. There were times when I wondered if it was due to temperament, but at that time, Edith didn’t seem to take it seriously.”
“But temperament doesn’t change once it’s determined. It would have been more reasonable to suspect anemia or a cold.”
“But you never confirmed being beta.”
“But I’m certain that I’m beta.”
“On what basis were you so sure?”
Edith pressed her lips together and couldn’t retort any further.
It wasn’t the right atmosphere to boast about the novel or its characters. While her basis was from the original work, she couldn’t bring herself to reveal it to Clyde.
Moreover, it wasn’t fair to blame him for her bodily condition that she hadn’t managed to control herself. When she frequently felt dizzy, she should have sought medical attention without worrying about expenses.
But if she had to make excuses, it was largely because Clyde had a captivating appearance.
Initially, Edith attributed her dizzy spells to his extraordinary features.
It’s only natural to feel a bit faint. It’s perfectly normal to stare blankly at Clyde. It wasn’t just Edith; other partners did the same. Even without being influenced by pheromones, many people’s legs would go weak in front of Clyde.
No one dared to casually rate his facial score due to his position as the prince, but objectively speaking, he was on par with Adrian.
Is it reasonable to expect me to remain composed when he unexpectedly hugs me from behind and hands me a gun? How can I stay calm when he creates chaos in the secluded maze garden, saying that rut has started?!
She silently screamed various excuses to herself, but her mouth remained shut.
Instead, Clyde, like a guardian, added to the doctor’s explanation.
“Edith has never been confirmed as beta. She matured without producing pheromones and just assumed she was beta. Is this possible?”
The doctor carefully replied after deliberation.
“Hmm, at this age, it’s very rare. In fact, I haven’t seen any cases like this. But theoretically, for various reasons, a temperament might be suppressed within the body and later manifest.”
Edith asked the question that had been on her mind.
“Is it really possible for it to manifest after turning twenty?”
“According to studies, the late teens are the limit. So I can’t say for sure.”
“That’s what I thought. It’s unlikely for it to manifest at my age.”
“For now, let’s thoroughly diagnose the anemia symptoms. We’ll start with the pheromone propensity test and also check for any other illnesses.”
“You’ve seen me before, Doctor. Did you notice anything unusual then?”
“I’m not a psychic, and it’s difficult to notice anything strange just by looking at someone’s face up close. Being a beta, I can’t differentiate based on scent either.”
Edith couldn’t continue her questioning, feeling like she was pressing too hard.
Meanwhile, the doctor, who was being pressured by the prince on the opposite side, was sweating nervously. Until she went to the bathroom, he had seemed moderately tense, but now he looked visibly exhausted.
“What’s wrong? Is something bothering you?”
The doctor wiped his forehead and replied, “I’ll just ask my assistant to bring a certain medical kit.”
“This is a pheromone diagnostic kit. We need to collect saliva, urine, and hair samples for testing in the laboratory. The results will be available in a few days, so Ketsmorris, please meet with me again then.”
“Oh, alright…”
“If the results show a unique temperament, we’ll have to deal with it accordingly.”
“How so?”
“We could consider methods used for those who manifest late. They mainly help release suppressed temperaments.”
Edith nodded.
Then she went to the bathroom to fill out the diagnostic kit.
The doctor, who had been kind to her, seemed to be sweating more, probably because of the pressure from the prince’s gaze. He instructed his assistant to bring a certain medical kit.
“I hope everything goes smoothly.”
The consultation seemed to be over, but the doctor didn’t get up from his seat.
“I have some explanations to make. I thought you might want to know for future treatments.”
“Please, go ahead.”
“To improve temperament, it’s best to stimulate it with a mate of the opposite temperament. If Kets is an omega, then being exposed to alpha pheromones as much as possible would be beneficial.”
“It doesn’t sound too complicated.”
“I’ll prescribe medication similar to alpha pheromones. But it’s better to have actual contact with an alpha than to rely on medication.”
“Contact?”
Edith was focused on the conversation and didn’t notice Clyde glaring at the doctor from outside her field of vision.
The doctor, looking embarrassed, hesitated for a moment before continuing nonchalantly, as if to convey purely medical information.
“For example… receiving a pheromone shower from a dominant alpha.”
Edith blinked innocently with round eyes.
“A pheromone shower? What’s that?”
The doctor seemed to expect her to understand, but he was momentarily speechless. He threw a helpless glance at Clyde, but Edith remained oblivious to the exchange.
Why is the atmosphere so tense between them?
With suspicions arising, her curiosity about the meaning of a pheromone shower grew.
It wasn’t mentioned in the original work. In the four years she had lived in this world, no one had mentioned this term to her.
It seemed like it had a negative connotation. Since the word ‘pheromone’ was mentioned, it was probably related to alphas or omegas.
If it were a good thing, it would have been widely used, but since she hadn’t heard it mentioned anywhere, it was clearly not a positive term. Moreover, the atmosphere had become chilly. Both the doctor and Clyde had flushed expressions.
Instead of the doctor, Clyde cleared his throat lightly.
“Um… I’ll explain what a pheromone shower is after the consultation is over. When we’re alone.”
“Is it something significant? Why can’t you explain it here?”
She didn’t notice the doctor’s neck reddening as he was silently pressured by Clyde from afar. The doctor made an awkward cough before trying to conclude the conversation with polite words.
“Anyway, actual alpha pheromones are much more helpful than medication. Make sure to expose yourself to pheromones frequently.”
It almost certainly sounded like they were already assuming she was an omega, even though the test results weren’t out yet. Edith felt a bit strange. They were pushing the idea of her being an omega almost definitively, even before the results were in.
If she claimed that she felt dizzy around Clyde because of pheromones, then there was a high probability that she was an omega.
How did this even happen?
In the original story, there was no trace of her being an omega.
The problem was that there were too many changes happening around her. She wasn’t sure if it was okay. Most of the changes were flowing in a direction she didn’t want, and she couldn’t control them.
Each character seemed to be running wild. Everything was a mess.
In the midst of chaos, she hesitated about what choice to make and what path to take in the future.
The doctor stepped back, and a moment of time just for the two of them arrived.
Of course, work was still overwhelming. The workload and intensity were enough to make her pour coffee. She couldn’t just pass it off as an excuse Clyde had made up to keep her from leaving.
The private room where they sat was quiet. One person had leisure time, while the other was buried under piles of documents, a contrasting scene.
The peaceful yet intense atmosphere indoors was warm, as if a fever were rising.
Edith’s eyes wandered between the file folders and blank papers. Her hand holding the pen flew across the paper without stopping. While reading other people’s documents, she was also mentally organizing her own report. She had to work this hard to be able to go home in the evening.
Clyde had set a fairly early quitting time, so if she didn’t submit her report by 6:00 pm, they would have to work into the night. It was a rule he had made after their first day of work.
But in reality, it was more like he’d go straight to bed, and she’d end up occupying his bed and falling asleep.
Because of the big guy’s constant complaints about being tired, they’d even started turning off the lights right after eating lately.
The thought of food made her shiver unconsciously.
“Ugh, late-night snacks…”
They were the worst. It was as if a mesmerizing demon had just emerged from hell. It not only inflated her belly, but she also couldn’t stop eating.
As she momentarily drifted off into thought, time flew by.
In the distance, she heard the bell signaling 6:00 pm.
Oh no.
“Your Highness, today, I was too busy practicing dance and receiving medical treatment. If you could just give me a little more time…”
“Well, Edith. Don’t you know you have to eat on time? I don’t want to be known as a cruel supervisor who starves his subordinates.”
“I don’t have much of an appetite. I’ll skip dinner and finish this instead.”
“No appetite? Oh dear, that’s my fault. Dinner must have already been prepared, but I’ll make sure to prepare a special late-night snack instead.”
He was undoubtedly offering medication.
And it was clear he was trying to keep her from going home. If she didn’t realize the cunning manipulation, then she must be a fool.
After listening to Clyde’s not-so-easy confession, she also sorted out her thoughts. In summary, she wouldn’t mention the prince’s personal counseling unless it became necessary, as long as there was no mutual understanding.
In a way, it was a very human and considerate approach. But reflecting on Clyde’s feelings made her feel a
bit uneasy.
Being a prince seemed quite difficult when it came to relationships.
He hadn’t identified a specific partner yet. Until there was some progress, it would be difficult to talk about the prince’s personal counseling.
It was unclear whether the one who had nestled in Clyde’s beating heart was herself or someone else. Perhaps he had cleared a space in his heart for the future and confessed that to her.
They weren’t in a rosy mood.
He had given her some ambiguity, but he hadn’t confessed directly, so she couldn’t simply rebel. If she did fall in love with him, she would have to commit wholeheartedly. Just as Clyde didn’t mention the position of prince when waiting for a partner, neither would she.
In the truest part of her heart, she couldn’t complain lightly. Once she started, she would have to hold his hand to the end.
It was easier to face him as the prince and his subject. And she wanted to minimize the time spent feeling nervous.
After all, the princess and prince were not in the mood for a pink mood.
