Side Story
Dating a younger guy is exhausting. That was the perfect way to sum up how I’d been feeling lately.
“How come you never seem to age?” I muttered as I looked at Redian, who was sound asleep right next to me.
Who would think this guy is already a father? It wasn’t just his appearance, which still had that boyish charm from when we first met…
“Hey kiddo, go to your room.”
“Hng! Mommy is mine!”
“In my past life, and the life before, and even the life before that, she’s always been mine. You didn’t even exist back then, kid.”
“Waaah!”
This scene played out on my bed every night. It was ridiculous that he was having such serious fights with his own child.
“…I can hear everything.” Redian slowly opened his eyes and responded.
I never had a thing for younger guys, but now that I think about it, it was all because of this face.
“Do you enjoy fighting with our son? Are all younger men this childish even when they get older?”
“You used to say you liked me because I was younger.” As he smoothly wrapped his arm around my waist, Redian spoke. “Don’t you agree? I’m young, so my stamina is—”
“Shh, shh. Quiet.” I quickly covered his mouth with my hands.
Who knows what nonsense he was about to spout next?
“Good grief.”
But as we faced each other like that, I couldn’t help but smile. And I became curious again.
“Redian, were we always like this?”
In countless lives repeated to gather the shattered pieces of my soul. With each life, everything changed—our names, our appearances, even the worlds we lived in. At some point, I even started losing track of myself. But Redian remembered me in every single one of those lives. Because Redian was always with me.
“When are you referring to? When you were Rozelia? Or Deia?”
“Umm, if you put it like that, I can’t really recall…”
Of course, I didn’t have any regrets about those past lives. Back then, I was too busy on ending the n number of possessions. The only thing I regretted was not remembering Redian from those times. I wondered what we were like in those other lives. Had he remembered me back then, too?
“For example, was there ever a time when you were more mature than me? Or older than me?” I asked out of curiosity.
“Of course there was.” Redian chuckled softly as if something had come to mind.
“Really? How was it?”
An older Redian… Just the thought of it made me feel wide awake. When and what was he like?
If I had been a princess in some royal family, Redian might have been the crown prince of another kingdom. Or if I had been a knight in some order, Redian could have been my direct superior.
“Employer and employee.”
“What? An employee? Wait, don’t tell me I was your maid or something?” I shot up in surprise.
Well, when you think about it, it wouldn’t be that shocking. I’d lived so many lives and done so many things.
So, back then, Redian was my master, not the other way around? Just the thought of serving Redian… I could already imagine how much he must’ve tormented me.
“You have no idea how much that maid tortured me…” Redian smirked mischievously as he read my expression. Then, lowering his voice in a playful whisper: “Should I tell you the whole story?”
And so, on a cold winter night, a long, long story began.
Have we met somewhere before?
* * *
Where am I now?
“…!”
I suddenly sat up, causing the creaky old bed to groan loudly.
[Finally awake? You must be a pro with how well you slept.]
There was no one else in the room except me, yet a strange voice came from somewhere.
“Ah, again? How many times is this now?”
I didn’t feel the least bit surprised. As I had some idea of the voice’s identity, I just muttered. “You must be angel number 277 or something that was sent by Possession God.”
Well, considering how many times I have been possessing someone, it would be strange to be surprised by this.
“This time doesn’t seem like it’ll be easy either,” Sighing, I looked down at my own body.
[Right, you really are quick-witted for someone experienced. Just your luck to end up in a family this ruined.]
Ruined family, huh. At those words, my gaze swept over the narrow and dim interior. Hmm. I got up and stood in front of the mirror hanging on the wall.
Black hair, violet eyes, looks like I’m in my late teens. The reflection showed a girl with a haughty, cold expression.
Hmm, as expected… Am I a spoiled, gold-spoon villainess locked in a basement for causing trouble?
With this look, the story was practically written for me. I was probably some noble’s daughter, a saintess, or a princess with a strained relationship with my father or some nasty older brother or younger sibling.
Okay. I got the feeling. I quickly pieced the story together and nodded.
In my past life, I’d been a heavy reader of romance novels, and now I was a seasoned veteran in possessing someone. With experience like that, conclusions came naturally.
“So, pretending to reflect quietly here for a while is probably the better option.”
[Are you going to lie down again?]
The angel grumbled, but I ignored them and lay back down on the bed.
Even if I deny reality and make a fuss, nothing changes. I thought with my eyes closed. I was sick of possessing someone, but I had reached a point where even that weariness was dulling. Wasting energy now wouldn’t help. Anyway, thanks to the ‘strange buff’ given by the Possession God, I would gradually learn important information.
“Are you going to get up, or what?”
But before I could fall asleep again…
“Ugh!”
Splash! Cold water suddenly drenched my face.
“As if the house wasn’t in enough chaos already, why’d we end up with something like you?”
Through the dripping water, I saw a woman standing over me.
“With the family falling apart, all sorts of trash are crawling in. Get up and get to work!” The woman turned and stormed off, clearly in a bad mood.
I had expected this life would be a tough one, but a water dousing right off the bat?
Who was that woman? Maybe my stepmother? But her outfit seemed off for that…
As I wiped the water from my face, I realized that whatever was going on, I couldn’t just let it slide.
“Excuse me, Ma’am, may I have a moment?”
Possession Rule No. 57. Until the situation is assessed, keep a low profile.
“What? Why did you stop?” The woman turned sharply to look at me.
“That, you look very tired. I happen to know a massage technique that’s great for headaches.”
Now was the time to apply the <Possession Rule No. 57>.
“Allow me to give you a brief massage.”
In other words, I had to lay low until I figured out what was going on.
Before the woman could react, I quickly moved behind her and began massaging her tense shoulders.
“Hmm, that feels nice. It’s been a while since someone with a bit of sense showed up.”
My hands were practiced and skilled. It made the woman’s scowl quickly soften.
“You know what? I’ll assign you to clean the basement instead of the bathroom.”
…Cleaning duty?
Aha. I glanced down at myself, finally understanding.
I’m not a spoiled villainess—but a maid?
