I Attacked Because I Was Afraid Of Death

Let’s go down together, shall we?

Chapter 2: Let’s go down together, shall we?

The flying gun even hit a zombie in the head.

Looking at the man’s distorted and crazy expression, Chi Xin felt a trace of guilt in her heart.

She really just wanted to rush over and stop him from shooting, but who knew that her leg… her leg lifted up on its own?

The man was shocked for a moment, but he at least finally managed to regain some of his sanity. Looking at the thin and weak-looking Chi Xin, he suddenly became afraid and didn’t dare to act rashly again.

“Cao Yan, what are you doing?”

Yu Xiang had been paying attention to this side and finally managed to pick up his jaw from the ground. He squeezed through to look at the man who was going mad, with a mix of admonition and warning in his expression.

“Yu Xiang, I know she saved your life, but you can’t protect her anymore,” Cao Yan’s eyes were filled with hatred as he pointed directly at Chi Xin behind Yu Xiang. “It’s this woman who caused this zombie tide and took so many lives in the base! We probably won’t survive either, so we should use her blood to pay tribute to them first!”

Yu Xiang glanced at Chi Xin behind him.

Normally, with her personality, she would have started crying at this point, saying she was innocent and that she didn’t do it on purpose, that she didn’t know anything. Just like how she reacted when they questioned her after taking Jiang Congyun’s spatial pendant.

But Chi Xin looked back at him with calm and serene eyes. Her face remained indifferent and composed, and she didn’t have the reactions he had imagined.

A trace of confusion flashed in Yu Xiang’s eyes as he looked helplessly at Jing Xiubai, who was standing nearby as if nothing was happening. “Aren’t you going to make a move?”

Chi Xin remained on high alert, feeling danger from all directions, and nodded frantically in her heart: Boss, please make a move! I don’t want to die yet!

Jing Xiubai didn’t answer him immediately. He shot the zombies that were rushing towards him, and a few drops of blood splashed on his handsome face. He looked towards the distance, where several tanks were breaking through the dense crowd of zombies, heading in their direction.

Chi Xin also followed his gaze. As more and more survivors followed his gaze, they spotted the tanks too. Under the overwhelming fear, they suddenly saw a glimmer of hope and erupted into cheers.

Those tanks contained biological shells which was urgently developed by the top research institute located in City A, designed to neutralize the zombie virus after the outbreak of the apocalypse.

One, two, three, four… only five tanks.

Despite the appearance of the tanks, the relief in Chi Xin’s heart was short-lived, and her expression turned even colder.

In the movie, in order to repel the zombie tide, City A deployed a total of ten tanks, each equipped with three biological bombs. Along with the assistance of the male protagonist, they managed to repel the tide and kill the high-level zombie.

But now, not only did the male protagonist show no intention of making a move, but even the tanks were reduced by half!

Seeing that the surviving humans around her cheering and the strength to kill zombies suddenly replenished, Chi Xin opened her mouth to say something but hesitated, unable to find a reason to voice her doubts.

However, her hesitation did not escape the notice of Jing Xiubai.

Jing Xiubai casually wiped off the blood stains from his face, and his eyes behind the lenses looked at her, “Chi Xin, are you trying to make excuses again?”

Chi Xin: Is it too late to beg for mercy?

She’s not stupid. After this zombie crisis was resolved, the people in the base would be free to deal with her, the culprit.

Whether she died in this battle or not, her fate wouldn’t be much better.

Thinking this, Chi Xin secretly glanced at Yu Xiang beside her.

In the movie, the reason Chi Xin managed to survive was precisely because of Yu Xiang’s desperate attempt to protect her. In order to uphold this protection, the protagonist group had to take Chi Xin with them to leave Base L overnight and embark on an even more dangerous journey.

Seeing Jing Xiubai questioning Chi Xin, Yu Xiang opened his mouth but remained silent. To put it bluntly, Chu Xin caused all of this mess, and who wouldn’t want to just kill her? It’s just that his conscience prevented him from doing anything to his ‘life-saving benefactor’. At this moment, it was only questioning, and it wasn’t worth intervening.

So he turned his face away, deliberately avoiding looking at Chi Xin. He was afraid she might use that kind of weak pleading gaze again, which would tug at his conscience.

Chi Xin looked at Jing Xiubai and didn’t really want to offend him any further. If he got angry and refused to take her with them, how would she follow the plot to cause trouble later?

At this moment, cheers erupted as the five tanks were ready, and they began firing the biological missiles at the horde of zombies.

Boom!

Thousands of zombies fell straight to the ground like puppets that suddenly lost their strings.

Seeing that it indeed worked, people’s excitement soared, and some even cried tears of joy.

One after another, the biological cannons were launched, and the zombies’ tightly packed attacks weakened at a speed visible to the naked eye, and the corpses piled up layer upon layer after losing the vitality of the virus. Everything seemed to be heading in a positive direction. Even the previously deranged Cao Yan was now kneeling on the ground, tears streaming down his face, and he was devoutly murmuring something with his hands clasped together.

But Jing Xiubai, who had been staring at Chi Xin, noticed that the girl’s beautiful yet indifferent profile was becoming more serious.

Did she discover something?

While everyone else was cheering at the falling dominos of zombies, Chi Xin didn’t join in. Instead, she seemed to grow more nervous and worried.

Her gaze kept searching among the zombies, and as the fallen zombies gradually made the standing ones more conspicuous….found it!

Chi Xin focused on a particular zombie that remained at the center of the group, with several other zombies surrounding it, based on its prominence and her memories from the scenes in the movie.

The distance was too far for Chi Xin to see its appearance clearly, but she could judge that its body was in better condition than all the other zombies.

This was the high-level zombie that launched the attack.

No matter how many ordinary zombies died, as long as it remained alive, there would be an endless horde of zombies attacking. Once the biological shells were depleted, even if the male lead was willing to take action, it might be too late!

How could this happen! She really doesn’t want to die!

And with Chi Xin’s increasingly cold gaze, Jing Xiubai also noticed the obviously different zombie. His expression turned serious.

Is it… that one?

But how did Chi Xin know, and how did she find it with such certainty?

Yu Xiang also noticed the serious expressions of the two, and his smiling face quickly turned serious. “Seriously, the zombies are almost dead, and you two don’t feel the joy of surviving the catastrophe?”

Chi Xin remained silent as the trouble-making system started talking in her head again.

[Host, you have killed fifty zombies and earned five trouble points. Keep up the good work, host!]

Chi Xin asked suspiciously, “Killing zombies also counts as causing trouble?”

[For the zombie side, the host is indeed causing trouble, so don’t let your guard down. Now, go kill that high-level zombie!]

Chi Xin: ?!

“Are you crazy, or am I crazy?” She was furious. “That high-level zombie, based on the classification from the movie, is at least Level 4. You want me, an ordinary person with no abilities, to go up and kill it?”

[No ordinary person can kill fifty zombies in a blink of an eye.]

“I… That’s impossible,” Chi Xin said firmly. “I don’t want to die, so don’t come up with ideas that will get me killed.”

The system remained silent, and Chi Xin thought it was convinced. She couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.

What a joke! Right now, the only one who can go head-to-head with a Level 4 zombie is the male lead. Everyone else would just be asking for death.

She was determined not to take such a risk. Nothing was more important than staying alive. With her resolve strengthened, Chi Xin stared at the high-level zombie with an even colder expression.

“What did you find?”

Jing Xiubai had appeared by her side at some point, his voice lacked the joy of the impending victory, nor the previous desire to kill her could be heard in his voice. Instead, he spoke with a tone similar to when he was discussing a problem in a classroom.

Chi Xin’s body stiffened, but she did not turn around.

“You’ve been looking for that particular zombie from the beginning. Everyone else is celebrating their rescue, only you know that it’s not over yet.” He said quietly, “How did you know… it’s that zombie?”

Chi Xin gritted her teeth and ignored him.

The hero’s reaction was too sharp. She obviously didn’t do anything, yet he still sensed something strange in such a chaotic situation.

She felt his sharp gaze on her, which made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end

“Chi Xin, what are you thinking?”

She was thinking why you’re still hesitating to take action! Stop pretending to be a bystander!

Chi Xin’s heart was filled with frustration and resentment, so she turned her head suddenly and looked over.

Since the original Chi Xin possessed the appearance capable of attracting countless admirers, Chi Xin’s body was indeed quite alluring. Despite her petite and delicate overall appearance, as if her waist can be broken with just one hand, she had all the right curves in the right places, with perfectly proportioned features, making her stand gracefully and attractively.

But those eyes, which appeared particularly large on her small face, no longer held the previous sense of vanity and arrogance. Instead, they were filled with the sheer determination to survive.

Her face was covered in makeup and bloodstains, yet she appeared more beautiful and dazzling than ever before.

“If you can laugh, go ahead and laugh!”

This was the first sentence Chi Xin said after transmigrating, directly pushing back against Jing Xiubai, eliciting shocked looks from the people around. Yu Xiang was a little dazed, “What do you mean?”

He didn’t even notice it himself, but after going through the series of events just now, he actually started to care about what Chi Xin said.

A glint flashed in Jing Xiubai’s eyes, and just as he was about to speak, they heard a long, eerie roar coming from a distant part of the empty city behind them.

The cheering humans noticed the anomaly and stopped, looking at each other in confusion.

People’s eyes turned towards the zombie that Chi Xin had been staring at just now.

It’s coming! Every muscle in Chi Xin’s body tensed up.

The zombie raised its head and let out a resounding roar. After a moment of intense silence, a deep rumbling sound approached from a distance, getting louder and closer, and the massive walls of Base L began to shake amidst the shock.

“That’s– zombies!” Someone pointed towards the distance and let out a desperate cry.

Its zombies, a larger, more numerous, and stronger horde of zombies. Under the call of that high-level zombie, a massive wave of zombies surged towards Base L.

People’s psychological defense collapsed in an instant. It seemed impossible to win. The biological shells were already depleted, and Base L was doomed. There seemed to be no hope of survival.

Someone saw Chi Xin, and a torrent of curses and accusations came crashing towards her, filled with anger and despair.

“It’s all your fault! You jinx! Witch!”

“We’re all doomed! We’re finished! It’s hopeless, it’s hopeless!”

“Push her down! Push her down!”

Chi Xin bore with these accusations, staring motionlessly at the high-level zombie.

“Push her down! Push her down!”

The desperate crowd began to vent their anger on the young girl, the only person they could control. Pushing her down meant her death, even though it wouldn’t change their situation. It was their way of releasing their frustration before facing their own impending demise. And gradually, some people began to push Chi Xin.

Despite being so afraid of death, Chi Xin’s lack of reaction at this critical moment was because she is fighting against the system in her mind.

[Jump down! Kill the zombies!]

“I won’t!”

[Hurry up! You won’t die! Jump!]

“It’s not like you’re the one who will die!”

Chi Xin’s brain was about to explode, and at this moment, the dog-like system looked at Jing Xiubai who was standing there watching coldly. The system changed its tone and said, [How about you push the male lead down! Hurry up, right now!]

Chi Xin: … Dog system! What kind of stupid idea are you spouting, isn’t the world chaotic enough?

Chi Xin raised her head and glanced at Jing Xiubai. He was still standing straight amidst the chaos, and as handsome as ever even when stained with blood.

“I…”

[The trouble value is lower than the passing line, and the host’s body will be controlled as a punishment.]

WHAT?!

Chi Xin instantly felt that her body was being controlled by a strange force. She was conscious but completely unable to control herself. Her eyes widened as she helplessly watched as the male lead’s face rapidly enlarged in front of her— and in the eyes of everyone, she rushed into Jing Xiubai’s arms without hesitation and wrapped her arms around his waist.

Chi Xin: …

Jing Xiubai: …

The crowd of onlookers: …

For a moment, the entire scene fell into silence, with only the thundering sounds of the approaching zombies.

Dog! Stupid! System!

Chi Xin desperately tried to pull herself out of Jing Xiubai’s arms, but no matter how hard she tried, the system seemed determined to make her offend the male lead, stubbornly controlling her actions, and forcing her to hold onto him even tighter.

Chi Xin: …

Chi Xin raised her head stiffly to look at Jing Xiubai, a trace of despair finally broke through her indifferent pupils, filling her beautiful face with a tempting and destructive scent of allure.

Horror of offending the male lead > Horror of fighting the zombies!

In her mind, Chi Xin quickly came to this conclusion and wanted to observe Jing Xiubai’s expression but found that the damn lenses were reflecting light at this moment, making it impossible to see whether there was any killing intent in his eyes.

“What are you doing?”

This was the first time Jing Xiubai’s composed tone faltered. He then placed a cold hand on her shoulder, as if trying to pull her away. However, the look in her eyes just now left him in a state of shock, causing him to hesitate for a moment.

Chi Xin: Hurry up and make a move! Stop hesitating!

But how could the system give her time to fix this terrible situation? As Chi Xin desperately tried to struggle against it and hoped that the male lead’s halo could resist the demonic power of the system and save them both– the power that tightly bound around her body suddenly disappeared. Without the control of the system, Chi Xin couldn’t contain the terrifying force in her arms. So in the eyes of everyone, with a decisive expression on her face, Chi Xin held Jing Xiubai in a desperate posture and jumped off the steep and towering wall that’s dozens of meters high.
