I Attacked Because I Was Afraid Of Death

Desensitization

Chi Xin had a dream.

The scene in the dream was vague and blurry, everything seemed to float and distort, making it difficult to recognize anything, but she could vaguely identify it as a laboratory. The whole environment was freezing white, sharp alarms rang incessantly, and the entire scene was shrouded in a bloody red light.

Chi Xin didn’t know who she was. She seemed to be a figure in a white lab coat hurrying to their destination, and then a miserable experimental subject lying on a bed.

Where is this place? Could it be the laboratory where Jing Xiubai once stayed?

Suddenly, her vision changed, and she felt that she was standing in a bizarre scene. Then a cold male voice sounded from her mouth: “I warned you that the experimental subject can control consciousness, you need to be especially careful. And yet, he still managed to escape. Who was on duty yesterday?”

A trembling man in a white coat replied: “I…it’s me…”

“Bang.” Chi Xin simply raised her hand and shot the man to death.

She continued speaking as if on autopilot: “There is no need for waste to exist.”

Chi Xin’s whole body trembled. Witnessing death again made her terrified even in her dream.

She looked at the hand that she had put down, and a snake-shaped ring with its head biting on its tail flashed with a dazzling light on a slender little finger. The snake’s head and tail are connected, as if it wants to spit out its own message to Chi Xin.

The scene shifted again, and a pair of cold, slender eyes emerged from the darkness, staring intently at her. His pale hands reached out, about to grab her…

Chi Xin opened her eyes suddenly. She sat up on the bed, trying to gasp for air, and looked at the clock beside her bed, which read: one-thirty in the morning.

What was the place in the dream, who is speaking, and what experimental subject has escaped? Those were not scenes in the movie, and it left Chi Xin feeling uneasy and disoriented. She got up and walked over to her desk and looked at a piece of paper with some notes she had written.

It had been three days since she arrived in this post-apocalyptic world.

She checked the trouble points out of habit, and found that it had been deducted a little more. Now it only had a pitiful 62 points, and she was on the verge of being controlled by the system again.

In the past three days, she ignored anyone who knocked on the door. She only relied on simple meals from the space to satisfy her hunger. During this time, she had focused on two things.

One is to carefully recall the plot of the movie, list several major events that may lead to death, and think about possible countermeasures. After all, in the movie, the original owner left Base L with the protagonist group and continued to participate in the subsequent plot.

The other thing is to force herself to recall the details of killing zombies that day over and over again.

The endless tide of corpses, the exploding brain matter, and blood all over his body… Chi Xin suppressed his fear and recalled those details again and again.

She will have to survive in such a dangerous world from now on. How can she survive if she is always afraid of zombies?

So she forced herself to face it.

The effect was obvious. From the beginning, even thinking about it, she would turn pale and huddle shivering in the quilt. Now, she only feels some psychological discomfort. She has completed desensitization treatment on herself.

It’s been three days, and the trouble points is about to fall below the passing mark. It’s time for her to go out and earn some more points.

When morning came, Chi Xin picked through a pile of flashy clothes in the space and finally picked out something wearable. Chi Xin put on a tank top and denim shorts, revealing her long, slender legs. She looked at it and found a loose white shirt to cover it.

The weather after the apocalypse can no longer be inferred based on common sense. It is now almost equivalent to the sweltering heat of July.

There was only the last pack of biscuits left, and Chi Xin didn’t want to eat it, so she left her room and headed to the base’s cafeteria.

In this post-apocalyptic world, the survival mechanism was similar to a collective distribution system. Every day, a team went out to collect food, returns a portion of it and were allowed to keep a small part for themselves. There are unified arrangements for both meals and the distribution of daily necessities.

With a calm face, Chi Xin strode past the people who were staring at her as soon as she left her room. She naturally picked up a plate and queued at the end of the line. After not showing up for three days, she attracted almost everyone’s attention.

Because of her previous achievement, not to mention the original owner had always looked down on cafeteria food, had made her somewhat of a legend. She always acted coquettishly and pretended to get the men she clung to to give her preferential treatment, and she had never appeared in the big cafeteria. So even though she was at the end of the line, people kept looking back at her.

Chi Xin subconsciously touched her forehead, feeling as if she had become a national treasure. But she couldn’t order people to stop staring at her, and make her look like she was being sensitive, so Chi Xin could only maintain the surface calm and treat everyone like potatoes and sweet potatoes.

There is nothing delicious in the apocalypse. Today, the canteen made egg drop soup with almost no eggs visible. The staple food was potatoes. Chi Xin took it in a polite manner and turned around to find a seat. When he turned around, she saw Cao Qing and the protagonist group walking in.

Chi Xin didn’t want to confront them yet, and she hadn’t figured out a strategy yet, so she just glanced at them, then randomly found an empty seat to sit down on a slightly soft, square, and high plastic stools and picked up the potatoes.

Naturally, the four people immediately notice the very eye-catching Chi Xin. Everyone in the apocalypse, whether they fought or not, will habitually show a nervous and slightly cowering expression.

But not Chi Xin. She has a beautiful face and wears clean clothes. When she is not fighting, she has a peaceful temperament, just like a young girl going to class after breakfast.

Cao Qing’s face suddenly turned ugly, and Jiang Congyun’s eyes were slightly unnatural.

No matter how much he thought about it, Cao Qing couldn’t swallow this breath. The woman, who was once easy to play with, and before he could make a move, suddenly became the god of war that attracted everyone’s attention, and even caused him such great embarrassment in public.

Seeing that Chi Xin’s back was turned to them, Cao Qing clenched his fists, put Cao Yan’s advice behind him, and walked over. Chi Xin was about to pick up the bowl to drink soup when she felt a gust of wind coming from behind her and a fierce kick was directed at the soup bowl in her hand.

There is no need for her to react on her own, as the muscles throughout her body immediately responded to the attack. Chi Xin raised the soup bowl to avoid the flying kick. At the same time, she held Cao Qing’s ankle and pressed it hard on the table. When his expression changed and he punched her in the face, she lowered her head to dodge it.

This was the counterattack designed by the system for her, but this person kept causing trouble for her, and Chi Xin was a little angry. The next second she dodged the punch, she raised her long legs and forcefully kneed Cao Qing’s side.

You should know, Chi Xin’s leg strength can even kick the head of a high-level zombie away. This time, he almost became paralyzed by the kick.

“Ahh -!” He screamed and fell to the ground. Chi Xin picked up a stool, wedged it against his neck, and firmly pushed it down on his head.

Then she turned around and sat down gracefully, with her left leg resting on her right leg, and she gracefully took a sip of the soup in the bowl without spilling a drop.

Regardless of Cao Qing’s cursing below, Chi Xin’s eyebrows softened and he seriously commented: “You should add more salt.”

Except for Cao Qing’s voice, the entire cafeteria fell into silence. Everyone looked at Chi Xin in astonishment, who was nonchalantly sitting on top of someone’s head and drinking soup leisurely, with deep awe in their hearts.

Although Chi Xin showed great power that day, the city wall was relatively far away after all. Most people only saw her movements and did not have a clear understanding of how powerful she was.

But they all knew how powerful Cao Qing was. He was a boxer before the apocalypse broke out. He had strong muscles all over his body and could smash the head of a zombie with two or three punches. But now, he was pinned down by Chi Xin, and the previous kick seemed to leave him with no strength to resist.

Chi Xin finished her soup leisurely in silence and took a bite of the potato. She just received a reminder that the trouble value increased by 1, and she was in a good mood.

It turns out that you can get trouble points by beating people up, she mused.

At this time, the soldiers headed by Xiao Li also walked into the cafeteria. They saw Chi Xin at the center of attention at a glance, and Xiao Li’s face turned red reflexively.

Amid the push from the people behind him, he managed to remain calm and walked up to Chi Xin. Without even looking at Cao Qing below, he asked in a low voice, “I haven’t seen you for a few days, how are you?”

“Hmm?” Chi Xin had just bitten a mouthful of potatoes, and when she turned to look at Xiao Li, her cheeks were still bulging. She chewed hard and swallowed, “It’s good, but there’s nothing to eat.”

Seeing that look in her eyes as she turned, even though she appeared so strong, her gaze was surprisingly pure and clear. The way she was chewing her food, like a little squirrel, was just too… cute.

Xiao Li felt his heart was hit hard, and he suddenly stuttered when speaking.

“That… that’s good.”

Useless! Can’t he come up with a more interesting topic to talk about? He wanted to punch himself.

Everyone had forgotten about the poor Cao Qing. In the end, the kind-hearted heroine couldn’t stand it anymore. She glanced at Jing Xiubai and was shocked by his unpredictable expression, but she still stepped forward.

“Chi Xin,” Jiang Congyun said in a gentle voice, “Cao Qing is Cao Yan’s brother after all. It’s not good for you to keep pressing him down. Why don’t you let him go?”

Chi Xin raised her eyes. This was her first official meeting with the heroine. Just like in the movie, Jiang Congyun has soft eyebrows and gentle features. Despite having a figure of an older sister, she insists on taking the route of a healing angel.

Even when facing Chi Xin who stole her things, she could still give her good advice.

“Oh.” Chi Xin had no intention of adding fuel to their strained relationship, so when Jiang Congyun spoke, she stood up obediently and removed the stool from Cao Qing’s head.

Jiang Congyun was also a little surprised by how obedient she was. She blinked and hadn’t quite grasped how easily she had achieved her goal.

This scene fell in Xiao Li’s eyes, and he felt like his heart was hit again.

Really…so cute.

Even though the stool was moved away, Cao Qing still took quite some time to get up. He held his waist and gasped, looking at everyone with a look of resentment.

“Jiang Congyun, didn’t she steal a lot of things from you? And you just let her? Are you so easy to bully?!” Cao Qing kicked away the stool that had been pressing on him, and a sharp pain in his waist hit him. Nevertheless, he quickly regained his footing and said, “Chi Xin was obviously capable of finding supplies on her own, but she still took what you found back just because she was your classmate!”

Chi Xin forgot that there was such a thing. She looked at Jiang Congyun, whose expression has soured somewhat, and scratched her cheek.

“I can explain this…” she said hesitantly.

“Let’s leave the explanations for later,” Jiang Congyun replied.

Jing Xiubai and Yu Xiang walked over together. He got another pair of glasses from somewhere, which was almost the same as the original one. Yu Xiang quietly gave her a reassuring look.

Jing Xiubai said, “Chi Xin, can we talk to you now?”

He didn’t mean to find trouble and his tone was normal. Chi Xin hesitated for a moment then nodded: “Okay.”

  2. Like i know that the first part of the chapter was just supposed to be a dream of the past. But background wise, it would make sense for her to also be an experimental subject
