Extra Story 15 : The End
“Xie Jingming, look at these little brats. They’ve started disobeying and don’t even come home anymore!” Lin Chuxia angrily slammed the table, venting her frustration at Xie Jingming.
“I just asked them a couple of questions about having kids. What’s wrong with wanting to hold a grandchild?” Lin Chuxia had seen the plump, adorable little grandson of their neighbor yesterday, which reminded her of when their own children were young.
Since retiring, Lin Chuxia has found her life becoming increasingly uneventful. She wasn’t much interested in joining the square dancing crowd, and staying at home all day, looking at Xie Jingming’s old face, was becoming tiresome.
“Chuxia, didn’t you say you wanted to see the grasslands before? Let’s go tomorrow while we’re still young and able to move,” Xie Jingming suggested with a smile, thinking that maybe a trip would distract her from pushing their children for grandchildren.
Lin Chuxia thought for a moment and agreed. She had spent so much time working and taking care of the family in the past that she’d never really had a chance to travel. Now seemed like the perfect time.
# The Vast Grasslands and Freedom #
They arrived at the vast grasslands of Hohhot, where the gentle breeze carried the scent of grass. Under the blue skies, flocks of sheep grazed peacefully on the low-lying grass. Xie Jingming, riding a horse, gallantly approached Lin Chuxia and extended his hand like a gentleman from a movie, saying, “Come on, hop on the horse!”
Lin Chuxia, however, wasn’t impressed by the scene. She rolled her eyes and took a step back. “Xie Jingming, you’re no spring chicken. Be careful, don’t hurt your back!” She had no interest in riding and decided to let a local guide the horse for her at a slow pace.
During their time on the grasslands, they experienced the locals’ warm hospitality. There was singing, dancing, and many people offering them drinks. According to local custom, if you could correctly pronounce the other person’s name, you could avoid drinking. Xie Jingming and Lin Chuxia, being part of a tour group, happily left the challenge to the younger participants, knowing that some local names could be over a dozen characters long and quite tricky to pronounce.
But their journey didn’t stop at the grasslands. “Next, let’s go to Xinjiang to see the desert, and then to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. What do you think?” Xie Jingming suggested.
Lin Chuxia looked out over the endless grasslands and nodded, “Sure, let’s go.” After seeing the vastness of the world outside, the thought of nagging their kids about having grandchildren seemed far less interesting. Traveling and experiencing life seemed much more fulfilling.
# Adventures Across the Land #
From the grasslands to the desert, and from the desert to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, they spent more than half a year traveling. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, in particular, reminded Lin Chuxia of a song:
*In the morning, I stand on the high mountain ridge, as a railroad is built to my hometown. From now on, the mountains won’t be too high, and the roads won’t be too far…* 【From the song *Mountain Road*】.
“Let’s go home, old man,” Lin Chuxia said one day, reaching out her hand to Xie Jingming, her face lit up with a radiant smile, full of energy even after months of traveling.
“This is the beauty of our country’s great land,” she added.
“Alright. We’ll travel again next year, maybe in the summer or fall,” Xie Jingming responded, also feeling uplifted by Lin Chuxia’s joy. Though they were growing older, seeing more of the world together filled their hearts with youthful excitement.
As they held hands under the golden sunlight, Xie Jingming couldn’t help but joke, “By the way, I’m still young, definitely not an old man yet!”
Lin Chuxia chuckled, “Oh, in that case, Mr. Handsome, let’s go home.”
“Yes, next year, we’ll continue our adventures!” Xie Jingming held Lin Chuxia’s hand tightly. Every year, he vowed to explore more of the great mountains and rivers of their homeland with his beloved wife, from the Yellow Mountain to ancient cities, from waterfalls to snowy peaks… together, forever.
