Chapter 95 – The Five-Person Squad
No one spoke up.
Everyone knew how dangerous it was to go to the front.
It was practically a death sentence.
They weren’t foolish enough to risk their lives so that these two could take credit and get promoted.
“I’ll go,” Tu Ran said. She could see what they were thinking. She and Xie Xu needed to take the lead, or these people wouldn’t budge.
“What about the rest of you?” Xie Xu looked at the remaining people.
“I’ll go with her,” the burly man said, hoisting his machete onto his shoulder and giving Tu Ran a disdainful glance. “With that small frame, how many people could she bring back? I’ll go with her.”
Tu Ran: “…”
‘If you want to go, fine, but there’s no need to insult me.’
With the burly man stepping forward as a vanguard, three more people volunteered. Two men armed with machine guns and a woman with a slender, slightly curved blade.
Tu Ran was momentarily mesmerized by the curved blade. Its elegant arc was the first time she’d considered describing a sword as beautiful.
They were about to delve into a horde of infectious aliens, engaging in close-quarters combat. Compared to firearms with limited ammunition, a sword was a better choice.
“I need a sword,” Tu Ran said.
She only had a handgun with twenty bullets left. Charging in with such limited gear seemed suicidal.
But among those present, only the burly man and the woman had blades; the others all had guns.
Xie Xu drew a knife from his back.
He tossed it to her.
“This is all we’ve got.”
Tu Ran looked at the knife, which was barely the length of her forearm, and was momentarily speechless.
“This is… too short.”
“It’s better than nothing,” the burly man said impatiently. “If you’re really skilled, it doesn’t matter what weapon you have. If you’re not, nothing will help you!”
Tu Ran pressed her tongue against her molars.
What to do? She already wanted to stab him.
Xie Xu added fuel to the fire, “He’s right.”
Tu Ran: “…?”
Xie Xu deliberately avoided her gaze and looked at the others in the team. “Let’s go.”
Tu Ran suspected that Xie Xu might be using this as an opportunity to get rid of her.
The burly man self-appointed himself as the leader of the five-person squad and directed, “I’ll take the lead. You, follow behind me.”
“Who?” Tu Ran looked around and realized he was pointing at her.
She was supposed to follow behind him?
Given her skills, she should be leading or covering the rear.
Ignoring her surprise, the burly man then pointed to the woman with the sword, “You stand behind her.”
Tu Ran understood. The burly man didn’t just look down on her; he looked down on all women.
She felt a bit more balanced.
Obediently, she followed the arrangement.
Once the team was ready, Xie Xu opened the carriage door for them.
As the door opened, the five-person team rushed inside.
The aliens in the sixth carriage were scattered and few.
There were no survivors in the sixth carriage.
Since the seventh carriage was right there, any survivors would have fled directly to it.
The focus now was on the first and second carriages.
After the aliens in the third carriage bit into the woman’s neck, more than half of the people in the third carriage had fled to the first and second carriages.
According to the footage retrieved by the Federal Government from the carriage’s surveillance system, the few people remaining in the second carriage to fend off the alien attack had little ammunition left. They wouldn’t hold out much longer.
Tu Ran’s squad’s task was to find survivors hiding in the other carriages, bring them to the first and second carriages, and then join the survivors there to hold the line.
