Chapter 61 – Stockpiling Food
Tu Ran walked in; there were no shop assistants or salespeople inside. The only people around were customers pushing their carts back and forth.
Given the empty fridge at home, Tu Ran also pushed a shopping cart.
She headed straight to the food section, where the food looked decent.
However, upon closer inspection, she realized that most of it was artificial.
This was especially true for the meat and dairy products.
And here, there was no real fruit, only various flavors of nutrient solutions.
Several shelves were filled with these, offering a wide array of flavors.
Tu Ran glanced at the prices, which were cheaper than those at the supermarket near her apartment, so she immediately picked up seven or eight bottles.
In case she ever didn’t have time to eat, she could use these to stave off hunger.
Moving on to the staple food section, Tu Ran was surprised to find natural noodles and rice.
But after checking the price, she decided against it.
The cost of a single pound was enough to buy her twenty bottles of nutrient solution.
She decided to stick with the nutrient solution, as it was just as filling.
The price of the artificial staple foods was much more reasonable, so Tu Ran unhesitatingly weighed and bought a few pounds of rice.
The vegetable section was the same story: naturally grown ones were exorbitantly priced, while the artificial ones were extremely cheap. Tu Ran picked out some leafy greens.
Next was the snack section, the part she looked forward to the most.
After all, most snacks were made of artificial ingredients, so the taste shouldn’t differ too much between the two worlds.
Tu Ran grabbed a pile of her favorite snacks, happily went to the self-service checkout, paid, and carried two large bags of food home.
It was already noon.
Taking the elevator up to her floor, she opened the door and, starving, first drank some nutrient solution to ease her hunger before starting to make lunch.
She steamed a bowl of rice and simply stir-fried some greens and shredded potatoes.
The potatoes were naturally grown, and she had bought them with some reluctance due to their high price.
Because compared to other natural foods, the price of a potato was still somewhat acceptable, and today they were even on sale, making them cheaper.
When the meal was set on the table, it looked quite decent.
Tu Ran also made herself a protein shake.
This was provided for free by the Federal Government to ensure the overall nutritional intake of its citizens.
Although the white rice was artificial, today Tu Ran surprisingly couldn’t tell it was artificial.
Tu Ran was amazed.
This wasn’t her first time eating white rice in this world; she often had it for lunch when she was in Reigaken State.
Those meals made it easy to tell the rice was artificial because naturally grown rice, when chewed thoroughly, has a sweet and fragrant flavor.
But with this bowl of rice, Tu Ran could actually taste the sweet fragrance.
Could the supermarket have made a mistake?
Tu Ran ran to the fridge to check the bag of rice she had purchased.
The label on the bag, in red letters, clearly stated “Artificial Rice.”
There was no mistake; it was indeed artificial rice.
Could it be that the artificial rice from the Federal Headquarters and that from Reigaken State were made by different manufacturers?
The difference was too vast.
It was like night and day.
Tu Ran sat back down and began to eat the rice voraciously.
It was simply delicious.
Since coming to this world, it was the first time she had eaten such tasty rice.
Tu Ran didn’t forget she also had two other dishes.
The shredded potatoes tasted exactly as she remembered.
The greens… why did they taste just like she remembered too?
Tu Ran took a few more bites to be sure, savoring them carefully. They really tasted just like the ones from her previous world, with none of the poor quality typical of artificial food.
Tu Ran couldn’t figure it out.
is it because of the power, chicken tongue? such mundane yet so important.
