Chapter 35 – Snake
Ding Naiqing’s body suddenly froze, and he slowly lifted his head, his eyes filled with uncontrollable delight.
“So, this might be an alie—”
Before he could finish his sentence, Tu Ran raised a thumb to her lips, gesturing for silence.
Their heads moved closer together in a silent agreement.
“So, this might indeed be an alien!” Ding Naiqing’s voice was filled with irrepressible joy. “The alien is a type of snake. It emerged from Mr. Egan’s body, took just a few steps, and then encountered its next host.”
Having snakes on the farm was not unusual, which was probably why the executive department had overlooked this point before.
Ding Naiqing was extremely excited. “This is my first time encountering a snake-type alien.”
“Calm down, calm down,” Tu Ran said in a voice only the two of them could hear. “If this alien is still on the farm, it might be watching us from somewhere. We have to be very cautious.”
“Yes, yes.” Ding Naiqing covered his mouth and nodded in enthusiastic agreement.
At that moment, eight guards not far away were watching them with strange expressions.
“What are they talking about? Why do they have to keep it from us? Acting all mysterious,” one guard asked curiously, holding his gun.
“Who knows?” another guard, busy organizing his ammunition, responded coolly. “Maybe they’re performing some kind of ritual?”
The others laughed at his blatant mockery.
The Federal Government’s Reigaken State Branch did not have a pioneering team. In fact, out of the forty-two states in the Federation, only the Federal Administrative Center had a pioneering team.
They had only heard that the Federal Government headquarters had recently established a department specifically for exploring the world within the “Threshold.”
For those living more than two thousand kilometers away from the Federal center, the Threshold seemed very distant, as did the alien species.
In fact, their understanding of the alien species was limited to what they had seen in the news. The Federal Administrative Center headquarters had not shared any information about the alien species with departments other than the pioneers. In the news headlines released to the public, the Federal Government had downplayed the terrifying image of these monsters to avoid causing panic among ordinary citizens.
As a result, most people did not fear the alien species much, especially the guards from the Executive Department.
They had been selected through rigorous tests and examinations to join the Executive Department. Every day, they patrolled the city, dealt with criminals, navigated the darkest corners of the city, and survived in a hail of bullets.
They were accustomed to dealing with tangible threats that could be seen and touched.
But now, an invisible entity had possessed a farmer, gnawed his bones clean, and then disappeared.
At this point, instead of sending a special task force to investigate and solve the case, the Federal Government had dispatched a group of seemingly unremarkable individuals to search for the alien.
Aliens, alien species, mutants—these words had frequently appeared in the news headlines in recent years. Things like pioneers, mass extinction plans, immigration, and the Threshold were all emerging topics, but there had been no substantial progress.
Looking at the two pioneers in front of them, they were young and did not seem particularly intelligent, making it hard to have confidence in them.
“Anyone who can become a pioneer and survive until now is no ordinary person,” a voice said quietly. It belonged to a guard who seemed to be older than the others.
