Chapter 15 – Remembering Nothing
The winding tracks disappeared into the night.
A whistling train arrived, and the doors opened. A mechanical female voice announced, “Medical Department Headquarters Station. Passengers needing to disembark, please take your belongings. Next stop, Administrative Building Station.”
Tu Ran followed Xi Chunzhi into the train.
Her emotions were mixed.
Although she really disliked this chaotic world, she had to admit she envied the original Tu Ran’s relationship with Xi Chunzhi.
The Administrative Building and the Medical Department were not in the same place.
Xi Chunzhi had been on her way to a meeting at the Administrative Building but had rushed to Tu Ran’s side when she encountered an alien species. She even demanded an explanation from the Medical Department, securing a year of free medical treatment for her.
Such friendship…
Sadly, the original Tu Ran was no more.
Red and green neon lights reflected on the train windows, vibrant and quickly receding, like fleeting fireworks, disappearing in an instant. What lay ahead was a riot of even more vivid colors.
“Dawn Station. Passengers needing to disembark, please take your belongings. Next stop, Yongchang Station.”
The train stopped at a flat area.
Tu Ran followed Xi Chunzhi into a dimly lit neighborhood.
Unlike the brightly lit Administrative Building and Medical Department in the city center, this neighborhood was much darker, with only a few neon signs marking the entrance to some private shops.
The air smelled damp, and the ground beneath their feet was soft, suggesting it had just rained.
Scattered streetlights on either side of the road emitted weak light, barely illuminating the path ahead.
The buildings in this neighborhood were generally low, nearly twenty stories tall. Compared to the skyscrapers of the Administrative Building and Medical Department, which had hundreds of floors, these buildings seemed old and small.
“Ding”
“Seventeenth floor.”
Fortunately, the inside of the building wasn’t too bad—clean and tidy, with bright lights making the hallway feel spacious.
This floor had only two doors facing each other.
“The one across from here is your apartment,” Xi Chunzhi said, her back to Tu Ran as she keyed in the code to her own door lock. Her voice was flat, the first words she had spoken to Tu Ran since they left the elevator at the Medical Department.
She said the apartment opposite was Tu Ran’s.
Tu Ran caught the underlying message.
She was sure Xi Chunzhi had figured out most of it.
Looking around, she didn’t see any obvious surveillance cameras.
In all likelihood, surveillance in this world was just as concealed as in her own, where cameras could be invisible to the naked eye.
However, since Xi Chunzhi dared to say, “The apartment across from here is yours,” this place must be secure and private enough.
She trusted Xi Chunzhi.
“I have amnesia,” Tu Ran said calmly, staring at Xi Chunzhi’s back.
She wouldn’t risk revealing that she was no longer the real Tu Ran.
After all, all the kindness Xi Chunzhi had shown her so far was based on the premise that she was still “Tu Ran.”
Xi Chunzhi didn’t show any surprise. She opened the door, and the smart sensor lights turned on immediately. She walked in, leaving the door open for Tu Ran.
Tu Ran followed her in.
Xi Chunzhi went straight to the fridge and grabbed a can of something that looked like beer.
She tilted her head back, drinking several gulps before wiping the moisture from the corner of her mouth and looking at Tu Ran.
“You don’t remember anything?”
Tu Ran touched the spot on the back of her head where she had been injured. There was no pain there anymore. “I don’t remember. I injured my brain.”
“Not even me?”
Tu Ran shook her head.
Man…😞😞
Thanks for the chapter!
