Chapter 103 – Red Dress
“The remaining doors will now be opened. Survivors, please do not crowd. Line up and cooperate with the Medical Department’s inspections.”
Tu Ran returned the curved blade to the woman, followed the crowd out of the carriage, and saw Xie Xu emerging from the rear carriage.
The two of them did not go through the queue but were directly taken to a temporary building set up by the Medical Department for a full-body scan.
There were no wounds.
Each of them also had a vial of blood drawn for further testing.
Since it was the first time the infectious aliens had appeared, the cause and mechanism of this infection were still unclear.
So many researchers had also arrived to collect tissue and blood samples from the corpses.
The three aliens that were captured alive were also going to be sent to the research institute for study.
The Federation was caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the infectious aliens.
Everyone knew how great a threat the appearance of infectious aliens posed to the Federation. Compared to the previous parasitic aliens, the infectious aliens had a much larger spread and could easily cause an explosive outbreak.
If even one was missed, it would be a ticking time bomb.
The Medical Department conducted very thorough checks on the survivors.
Tu Ran, exhausted, slumped into a chair after her blood was drawn, leaned back against the wall, and closed her eyes.
The entire Mitney Square was now surrounded by the Federation’s military, and the suspended rail train home was no longer running. She couldn’t go back for a while, so she decided to sleep here for a bit.
Xie Xu sat down two seats away from her, glanced at her sprawled sleeping position, and turned his face away.
He couldn’t bear to look.
Tu Ran was sleeping soundly when someone suddenly tapped her on the shoulder.
She woke up instantly and looked at the person; it was Ding Naiqing.
“Sister Ran, why are you sleeping here?”
“No trains, can’t get home,” Tu Ran rubbed her eyes, still sleepy.
After resting for a while, her body ached even more, and she didn’t want to move at all.
“No trains?” Ding Naiqing stood up. “I’ll get you one. You saved so many people; you shouldn’t be sleeping here.”
“Thank you,” Tu Ran said gratefully.
Ding Naiqing scratched his head awkwardly. “You’re welcome.”
Watching him leave, Tu Ran adjusted her position and leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes.
Suddenly, a red dress caught her attention.
Tu Ran’s mind cleared for a moment, and she looked at the owner of the red dress.
It was a little girl with pigtails.
She was standing in the middle of the line, moving slowly with the queue, waiting for the Medical Department to examine her.
Her turn was coming soon.
To avoid attracting attention, Tu Ran looked forward but kept an eye on the girl with her peripheral vision.
When it was the girl’s turn, she stepped into the machine for a full-body scan. Two minutes later, she stepped out, and the scan results showed “No injuries.”
Next, she sat in a chair, rolled up her sleeve, and the machine drew a vial of blood from her pale wrist.
She passed the check just like that.
Tu Ran couldn’t sit still any longer.
She stood up and walked towards the little girl.
Xie Xu, who was resting with his eyes closed nearby, noticed her movement and followed her with his gaze.
When Tu Ran reached the girl’s side, she suddenly bent down.
She dropped a button she had removed from her clothes earlier and pretended to pick it up.
“Little girl, did you drop this?” she asked with a smile.
The girl instinctively reached out her hand.
Tu Ran placed the button in her palm, making sure her fingers touched the girl’s skin.
In that instant, Tu Ran found the memory she was looking for.
