Episode 13
Yurian hoped that Yvonne would trust him. That’s why he wanted to prove to her that he was harmless. Eating the soup had that intention as well. However, he was aware that she was more vulnerable than she appeared, so he wanted to exploit that aspect a bit.
Moreover, there was a strange scent coming from her. If he smelled that fragrance, he could endure it without taking a stabilizer, and there were no side effects to worry about.
If he had shown side effects, perhaps during the time he was subjugated under the Emperor’s abilities, he might have twisted her neck.
“Yurian?”
It somehow felt good that she didn’t call him Leonhardt like before. Furthermore, due to the drug, his body was burning as if hot water had been poured on him.
“Hey, Yurian?”
Yvonne’s footsteps echoed in his ears. Yurian slowly opened his eyes while crouching on the floor. When he opened his eyes, he saw Yvonne. A scarf was visible around her neck, undoubtedly worn because of him. Additionally, the thin dress she was wearing looked strangely uncomfortable. It seemed to be testing his patience.
Due to his hands restrained behind his back, moving was difficult. He slowly raised his body, panting heavily.
“Where does it hurt?”
“…Yvonne.”
For some reason, this situation made him laugh. Perhaps it was because of the dress and the mismatched scarf due to what she had asked.
After exchanging only a few words, she approached and looked down at him with a worried expression. She gazed at Yurian, and then, she looked at the empty soup bowl he had left.
“Did you eat something?”
“Heh… There seems to be something in the soup.”
Breathing heavily, Yurian struggled to get up. When he did, Yvonne took his arm and led him to the bed. Yurian found her intriguing and fascinating. She seemed more casual than the Yvonne he knew, which was surprisingly appealing. Nevertheless, seeing her hair similar to Emperor Hildebrandt’s gave him the urge to act harshly.
“Why are you smiling?”
“Yvonne became kind.”
“Actually, I told them not to put anything in the food. But it seems they don’t listen even to me.”
Yurian felt like her words were not lies. The steady heartbeat and eye contact when speaking indicated that. However, she seemed to consider it a mistake, lowering her eyes and then looking back at him.
Due to her expression, Yurian couldn’t help but blurt out.
“It seems you gave me an excitant.”
“Is that so?”
“…Yes.”
“Then… I’ll help you.”
Yurian unknowingly smiled at her innocent words. He noticed that she was also smiling, but he had no intention of wiping away his smile.
Somehow, Yvonne seemed to be afraid of him. Whenever their eyes met, she seemed to shrink, yet her unwavering gaze almost appeared challenging.
“How are you going to help me, Yvonne?”
Yurian gently caressed Yvonne’s arm as she lay him down on the bed. She then placed her hand on his forehead, saying, “It’s not an excitant but seems like a fever-reducing medicine.”
“Really?”
“Your body temperature is too high.”
“Don’t measure it with your hands; check it with my forehead.”
After some hesitation, Yvonne brushed her hair aside and pressed her forehead against his, not measuring with her hands. He felt a strong scent penetrating his nose as if their lips were about to touch.
At that moment, the effects of the excitant completely disappeared.
Because of Yvonne.
In this absurd situation, Yurian found himself unconsciously staring at her. Yvonne covered his cheek with both hands. He, for some reason, closed his eyes, feeling a mix of disappointment and the inevitability of dealing with such a woman.
The warmth that had touched his cheek suddenly vanished. Startled by the sudden disappearance, he opened his eyes, only to find that Princess Yvonne was already moving away, heading towards the door.
“Where are you going?”
“I need to get the antidote. With such a high fever, it’s dangerous.”
“Your Highness?”
“I’ll be right back.”
“Yvonne! Wait! Yvonne!”
Despite his protests, Princess Yvonne had already left his sight, quickly ascending the stairs.
Yurian felt perplexed as he watched her brisk and regular footsteps retreat without a hint of disturbance.
“What is this?”
Yurian let out a bitter laugh, overwhelmed by a sense of disappointment.
* * *
What Yurian had taken was probably an antipyretic. When you take it, your whole body starts to ache as if it has been hit. Fortunately, Princess Yvonne, who had carried various diseases, had a wide variety of medicines in her room.
As Yvonne examined the medicines in the cupboard, he found the antipyretic. Since having a fever was a common occurrence, finding the antipyretic was not challenging.
Luckily, if he needed a different medicine, it would have been a big problem.
“Thunk.”
“Hill? Hill!”
The wolf that Hilldebrandt gave me welcomed me back to the room as if expressing joy. I was crouching down, and because of that, it awkwardly pressed against my buttocks as I sat down. Hill, pressing its shoulders, lifted its front paws and…
“Ugh, Hill.”
In just a few hours since we met, this wolf was surprisingly affectionate. It sprawled on its back and looked quite cute. However, giving affection might lead to predictable outcomes.
“Hill, you shouldn’t get too close. I like Dad the most.”
Although I knew it was nonsense, the door was open, so I couldn’t help it. Outside, there were knights and maids stationed by Hilldebrandt. If we weren’t careful, our heads might roll.
“For all your resemblance to Dad, you’re still a beast.”
For some reason, the scent of lilacs from Hill seemed a bit stronger. At that moment, Hill stood up. It raised its front paws on my shoulders, and its face touched mine as it scratched its cheek. It settled down obediently when I hugged it tightly.
“And what kind of name is Hill? So uncouth.”
After patting its head wildly, the sound of its panting seemed even louder. Could it be that it’s not just a wolf, but someone had hypnotized it to behave like a dog?
Then, with a knock, the door that was already open swung wide.
“Your Excellency.”
It was Evonie. She was my faithful servant, but also belonged to Hilldebrandt.
“What’s going on?”
“I’ve brought what you mentioned.”
“Thank you, leave it there.”
“Yes.”
Looking back and forth between me and Hill, Evonie placed a bundle of papers on the table beside the bed. I tried to push Hill away, but it was so strong that it wouldn’t budge.
“Could you step aside?”
Whether it understood my words or not, it finally moved aside when I asked it to. The hair and clothes might be a mess, but it didn’t matter. It was already late evening, and I just needed to go down with the antipyretic.
Approaching the table, Hill stuck close to me. It reminded me of the old days when I used to raise animals, making me want to pet it all the time.
When I approached the table, Hill clung to it as if it wanted to follow. It was a big problem because it reminded me of my past pets, making me want to caress it incessantly.
I looked at the paper on the table. After confirming it, I held it in my arms. I planned to go down to the underground with antipyretics and various other items.
“Kiiing….”
“Why are you acting like this?”
Hill grabbed the hem of the dress and pulled, making me wonder why. Despite my question, there was no response, and I had to firmly say something as it continued to pull.
“No, I have somewhere to go.”
“Whine….”
“Don’t have time to play?”
It seemed like it wouldn’t let go, and I felt like I might fall because it wouldn’t release the dress.
“Alright, good. Let go.”
When I petted its head, it finally let go. It seemed certain that someone had hypnotized the wolf to behave like a dog. Earlier, I had doubts, but now I was sure. Otherwise, there was no way it would act like a dog like this.
“Stay quiet and wait; we’ll sleep together later, okay?”
Nodding its head seemed surprisingly human-like. So, looking at it staring into my eyes felt a bit strange, and I left it alone, gathering the items once again.
Even as I went out, it continued to watch me like it was keeping an eye on me, making me turn around several times.
—
As I tried to go downstairs, my ankle hurt, slowing my steps. Perhaps it was because of the new shoes I wore today; they felt uncomfortable. I had been moving around all day.
Even though I looked like a leisurely princess, I was not someone who didn’t work. I went downstairs with the feeling of working overtime. When I opened the door, it seemed Yurian had fallen asleep, judging by the faint sound of his breathing.
I couldn’t leave him like this.
“Sigh.”
He seemed to be greatly affected by the fever reducer. His whole body looked damp and sweaty, and his eyes were tightly closed. The black hair sticking to his cheek seemed to vividly show his pain.
I had placed towels on the table beside the bed. Then, I went to get a cup with cold water from the bathroom. Fortunately, warm water came out when I tried it, and I filled the cup with it.
Taking it near the bed, I placed the cup on the table. I used a towel soaked in water to wipe his face. Although his eyes seemed to twitch, they didn’t open.
When I finished wiping his face, his breathing seemed louder.
“Take a fever reducer and sleep.”
“…Yvonne.”
Whether he woke up, he squinted his eyes. The ruby-like red eyes between the wrinkled eyelids still looked fierce like a beast.
“Please feed me.”
“Huh? Of course.”
Luckily, there was a cup. So, I placed the towel used to wipe his face in the basin and poured the water I brought into the cup.
“Ah.”
When I told him to open his mouth, he looked at me as if he was about to growl, then opened his mouth slightly. So, I tried to put the pill in, but he closed his mouth again.
“What are you doing?”
“Feed me with your hand.”
He seemed to have a strange aura about him. Moreover, it changed like an innocent lamb as soon as our eyes met, giving me a feeling that I had momentarily misunderstood something.
Did he have a hallucination during sleep?
“Yes?”
“Feed me with your hand, Yvonne.”
